According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), heart pain is caused by wind-cold pathogenic factors invading the Heart. Upon onset, it may lead to death in some cases, survival in others, or persist as a chronic condition (zhen) over time. The Heart is the master of the five Zang organs and houses the Shen (Spirit). Its main meridian (Shou-Shao-Yin Xin Jing, Heart Meridian of Hand-Taiyin) must not be injured; if injured and causing pain, it is called "True Heart Pain" (Zhen Xin Tong), where morning onset leads to evening death, and evening onset leads to morning death. If branch collateral vessels are invaded by wind-cold without damaging the main meridian, heart pain also occurs, characterized by intermittent severity, thus becoming a chronic condition but not immediately fatal.
Furthermore, the Heart belongs to Fire and converges with various Yang meridians. The Shou-Shao-Yin Xin Jing is the primary meridian of the Heart. If Qi of all Yang aspects is deficient, leading to rebellious Qi in the Shaoyin meridian, this is termed "Yang Deficiency with Yin Reversal" (Yang Xu Yin Jue), which also causes heart pain, often radiating to the throat.
Additionally, when other Zang organs are weak and diseased, pathogenic Qi invades the Heart, causing heart pain characterized by urgent pain below the heart, known as "Spleen Heart Pain" (Pi Xin Tong). The Foot-Tai-Yin Pi Jing (Spleen Meridian of Foot-Taiyin) is interiorly-exteriorly related to the Stomach, and the Foot-Yang-Ming Wei Jing (Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming) is the primary meridian of the Stomach. If Stomach Qi is deficient and rebels upward to invade the Heart causing pain, accompanied by abdominal distension and severe pain radiating to the heart region, it is called "Stomach Heart Pain" (Wei Xin Tong). The meridian of the Kidney is the Foot-Shao-Yin Shen Jing (Kidney Meridian of Foot-Shaoyin), interiorly-exteriorly related to the Bladder, whose primary meridian is the Foot-Tai-Yang Pang Guang Jing (Bladder Meridian of Foot-Taiyang). If these two meridians are both deficient and rebellious, with rebellious Qi invading the Heart causing pain, symptoms include heaviness in the lower body with loss of control, suffering from diarrhea and cold in the middle jiao, known as "Kidney Heart Pain" (Shen Xin Tong).
Diagnosis reveals that an urgent Heart pulse indicates heart pain radiating to the back and difficulty swallowing food.
A Chen-Jin (Deep-Tight) pulse at the Cun-Kou position indicates cold in the epigastrium causing frequent pain.
A Jin (Tight) pulse at the Guan position indicates severe pain in the epigastrium.
A Chen (Deep) pulse at the left hand Cun-Kou position indicates Yin; if Yin pulses are absent, there is no normal Heart pulse, manifesting as toxic severe pain in the epigastrium. (From Volume 16)
The *Bei Ji Qian Jin Yao Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) provides formulas for treating heart pain:
Cinnamon Twig Powder (Guixin Mo): Take one cun-bi (a measure equivalent to a square inch) with warm wine, administered several times within a short period. Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) taken according to the same method is also effective. Avoid raw green onions. (Same records in Wen Zhong, *Ji Yi Fang*, and *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*; From Volume 1)
The *Yan Nian Mi Lu* (Secret Records for Longevity) provides the Evodia Pill (Zhuyu Wan) for treating heart pain:
Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu, 1.5 liang), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang, 1.5 liang), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin, 1 liang), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu, 2 liang), Ginseng Root (Renshen, 1 liang), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, 1 liang), Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix (Fuzi, 1.5 liang, processed), Sichuan Pepper (Shujiao, 1 liang, perspired), Roasted Licorice Root (Gancao, 1 liang), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, 1 liang), Angelica Sinensis Root (Danggui, 1 liang).

Avoid pork, raw green onions, seaweed, Chinese cabbage, peaches, plums, and sparrow meat. Prepare new medicine after finishing; alcohol intake is unrestricted, take before or after meals as desired.
