The etiology of *Zhi Yin* (Branching Fluid Retention) refers to fluid retention stagnating between the chest and diaphragm, supporting and invading the Heart, hence it is called *Zhi Yin*. This condition causes coughing with counterflow qi, panting, and a body appearance resembling edema; this is termed *Zhi Yin*. (From Volume 20)
Shen Shi's formula treats *Zhi Yin* under the Heart, where the patient experiences frequent dizziness (or alternatively, suffering from heavy-headedness), using Zexie Tang (Alisma Decoction).
Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 2 liang) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 5 liang)
Cut the above two ingredients. Boil in 2 sheng of water to obtain 1 sheng of decoction. Then boil again with 1 sheng of water to obtain 5 he of decoction. Combine these two juices and divide into two doses. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, etc. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun).
Qianjin Fang treats *Zhi Yin* causing difficulty in breathing, using Tingli Dazao Xiefei Tang (Descurainia Seed and Jujube Decoction to Drain the Lungs).
Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen Lepidii Semum, roasted until purple, pounded into pills the size of a bullet) Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 12 pieces)
Take the above two ingredients. First, boil the Jujubes in 3 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng of juice. Add Descurainia seeds, and simmer to obtain 1 sheng of decoction. Take all at once. One dose lasts three days; it can be taken for three to four doses. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun).
Furthermore, if a vomiting patient does not feel thirsty, it indicates the condition is about to resolve. If they were previously thirsty but now are not, it is because there is *Zhi Yin* under the Heart; Xiaobanxia Tang (Minor Pinellia Decoction) is the primary treatment. If Fu Ling (Poria) is added, it becomes Xiaobanxia Jia Fuling Tang (Minor Pinellia and Poria Decoction). If one feels thirsty first and then vomits, this is due to water stagnation under the Heart; Xiaobanxia Jia Fuling Tang (Minor Pinellia and Poria Decoction) is the primary treatment. For sudden vomiting, epigastric fullness and obstruction, water in the intercostal space, dizziness, and palpitations, Xiaobanxia Jia Fuling Tang (Minor Pinellia and Poria Decoction) is also used.
Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 2 dou) Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, half jin) Fuling (Poria, 4 liang)
Cut the above three ingredients. Boil in 7 sheng of water to obtain 1.5 sheng of decoction. Divide into two doses. Avoid mutton, maltose, and strong vinegar. (In Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun, Poria is 3 liang; the rest are the same).
Furthermore, suppose a thin person has palpitations below the umbilicus, expectorates saliva and foam, and suffers from epilepsy-like dizziness; this is caused by water. Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is the primary treatment.
Zhuling (Polyporus, skin removed) Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) Fuling (Poria) [each 3 fen] Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, skin removed, 2 fen) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 5 fen)
Sift the above five ingredients into fine powder. Take one fangcunbi (square-inch scoop) with water, three times daily. Drink plenty of water until sweating occurs for recovery. Avoid peaches, plums, sparrow meat, raw green onions, and vinegar products. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun).
Furthermore, when there is phlegm-fluid under the Heart, with fullness and distension in the chest and hypochondrium, and dizziness, Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang, honey-fried) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) [each 3 liang] Fuling (Poria, 4 liang)
Finely cut the above four ingredients. Boil in 6 sheng of water to obtain 3 sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Take 1 sheng per dose, three times daily. Urination should become smooth. Avoid seaweed, Chinese cabbage, raw green onions, peaches, plums, and vinegar products. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun).
Furthermore, wine drinkers who cough will inevitably hemoptysis; this is caused by excessive drinking. Those with a deficient pulse will inevitably suffer from dizziness, because they originally had *Zhi Yin* in the chest. For *Zhi Yin* causing chest fullness, Nongpou Dahuang Tang (Magnolia Bark and Rhubarb Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Nongpou (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 1 liang, honey-fried) Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 6 liang) Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 4 liang, honey-fried)
Finely cut the above three ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Divide into two warm doses. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun).
Furthermore, for upward rushing qi, sweating, and coughing, this is due to fluid retention; Ganzao Tang (Dried Date Decoction) is the primary treatment. However, it should not be given after purgative therapy. Ganzao Tang also treats swelling, as well as the formula for *Zhi Man Yin* (Branching Fullness Fluid).
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix) [each 1 liang] Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos, fried) Raohua (Adonidis Flaveriae Flos) [each 0.5 liang] Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) Gansui (Kansui Radix) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) [each 1 liang] Ganzao (Jujubae Fructus, 10 pieces)
Cut the above eight ingredients. Boil in 5 sheng of water to obtain 1.6 sheng of decoction. Divide into four doses. Take on an empty stomach; aim for smooth bowel movement. Avoid seaweed and Chinese cabbage.
Furthermore, when there is *Zhi Yin* in the intercostal space, the patient experiences wheezing and fullness, hardness and obstruction under the Heart, darkened complexion, and a deep, tight pulse. After dozens of days, if emetic and purgative treatments by physicians have failed to cure, Mufangji Tang (Stephania Tetrandra Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Mufangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 3 liang) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, three pieces the size of a chicken egg) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 4 liang, cut)
Take the above four ingredients. Boil in 4 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng of decoction. Remove the dregs. Divide into two doses. If the deficiency is resolved, the patient recovers. If excess persists, relapse occurs after three days, then administer again. If still not cured, it is appropriate to remove Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and add Fuling (Poria) and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), i.e., Qu Shigao Jia Fuling Mangxiao Tang (Decoction without Gypsum plus Poria and Mirabilite).
Mufangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 3 liang) Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix) Fuling (Poria) [each 4 liang] Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 3 he)
Take the above five ingredients. Boil the first four in 6 sheng of water to obtain 2 sheng. Remove the dregs, add Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), and divide into two warm doses. Recovery occurs with mild diarrhea. Avoid raw green onions. (This formula originally comes from Zhang Zhongjing's Shanghan Lun; Shen Shi's formula is identical, both from Volume 18).
