Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Cold Damage) records: For chest bi syndrome where the patient cannot lie flat and heart pain radiates to the back, Gualou Xiebai Banxia Baijiu Tang (Trichosanthes Fruit, Macrostemon Rhizome, Pinellia Tuber, and White Wine Decoction) is the primary treatment. Formula composition: Large Gualou fruit (one piece), Xiebai (cut, 3 liang), Banxia (half sheng, washed). The above three ingredients are boiled in one dou of white wine until four sheng remain. Strain the dregs. Take one sheng warm each time, three times a day. Avoid mutton and malt sugar. (This formula is identical to that in *Gujin Luyan*, cited from Fan Wang's book, Volume 15).
*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats chest bi with heart pain.
Moxibustion at Danzhong (CV 17), 100 moxa cones. The acupoint is located one cun above Jiwei (CV 15). (Another view states it is on the midline of the sternum, between the two breasts; this point is contraindicated for needling).
Also treats chest and hypochondriac fullness with heart pain.
Moxibustion at Qimen (LR 14). The number of cones corresponds to the patient's age. The acupoint is at the end of the second rib, directly below the nipple, one and a half cun lateral to Burong (ST 19). (Both cited from Volume 13).
*Gujin Luyan* Xiaocao Wan (Small Herb Pill) treats chest bi, heart pain, rebellious qi, and fluid retention in the diaphragm that fails to descend.
Herbs: Xiaocao (3 fen), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 3 fen), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, 3 fen, perspired), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 2 fen), Xixin (Asarum, 3 fen), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 2 fen, processed).
The above six herbs are crushed, mixed, and sieved. They are combined with honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take three pills before meals with rice juice, three times a day. If ineffective, gradually increase the dose until therapeutic effect is achieved. Avoid pork, cold water, raw scallions, and raw vegetables. (Identical to Fan Wang's text, cited from Volume 8).
Fan Wang treats chest pain with Zhishi San (Immature Bitter Orange Powder).
Herbs: Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, 8 fen, roasted), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 5 fen).
The above two herbs are crushed and sieved. Take one fangcunbi (a square-inch measure) with wine, three times a day. Avoid raw scallions. (Identical to *Shenshi Fang*).
*Shenshi Fang* treats chest pain with Zhishi San (Immature Bitter Orange Powder).
Herbs: Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange, 4 pieces, roasted), Shenqu (Medicated Leaven, 1 liang, fried), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 1 liang).
The above three herbs are crushed and sieved. Take one fangcunbi with wine, three times a day. Avoid plums, peaches, and sparrow meat. (Cited from Volume 16).
*Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases) discusses: Ben Tun (Running Piglet) is an accumulation of qi in the Kidney. It arises from fright, anxiety, and overthinking. Fright injures the Heart Spirit (Shen); anxiety and overthinking injure the Kidney Will (Zhi). When Spirit and Will are injured and disturbed, qi accumulates in the Kidneys and moves up and down like a running piglet, hence the name Ben Tun. When the qi invades the Heart, the heart palpitates restlessly, as if startled by a carriage or threatened by a person. The five Zang organs become unstable, food and drink cause vomiting, qi fills the chest, madness and dementia occur without stability, delusions and hallucinations arise. This is the presentation of Ben Tun caused by fright. If qi fills and supports the chest and heart, causing mental restlessness below the heart, aversion to hearing voices, with episodes occurring at intervals, alternating between remission and exacerbation, shortness of breath, cold hands and feet, internal vexation and painful knotting, and nausea, this is the presentation of Ben Tun caused by anxiety and overthinking. Palpating the pulse reveals a rapid and irregular rhythm (or "chu zhu"), indicating Ben Tun disease.
*Duanju*: The Yellow Emperor asked Jin Yezhi: "Fright causes illness resembling Ben Tun. What is this disease?" Jin Yezhi replied: "Fright causing Ben Tun presents with heart palpitations and restlessness. Sometimes the eyes widen, refusing interaction. Physicians do not understand. The patient cries out as if burdened. Bentun Tang (Running Piglet Decoction) is the primary treatment." The Yellow Emperor said: "Good." The Yellow Emperor asked Jin Yezhi: "How to distinguish Ben Tun caused by anxiety and overthinking?" Jin Yezhi replied: "Ben Tun from anxiety and overthinking presents with qi filling and supporting the chest and heart, mental restlessness below the heart, aversion to hearing voices, episodic occurrence, alternating remission and exacerbation, shortness of breath, cold extremities, internal vexation and painful knotting, and nausea. Physicians do not understand. The patient cries out as if offended. Bentun Tang is the primary treatment." The Yellow Emperor said: "Good."
The Master said: In cases resembling Ben Tun, qi rises from the lower abdomen, rushing up to the throat. During attacks, the patient feels as if dying, then recovers. All such cases originate from fright. This is due to pus accumulating in the Kidney region. (Identical to Fan Wang).
The Master said: There are four types of diseases: Ben Tun, vomiting of pus, fright/trepidation, and Fire Evil. All these arise from fright. For those classified as Fire Evil, Guizhi Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell) is the primary treatment. For those caused by recent loss of wealth or persecution by officials leading to fright, treat with Chitou Qiandan Wan (Owl Head and Lead Carbonate Pill). (*Qianjin Yifang* has Feihong Qiandan Wan for epilepsy and convulsions, which is similar in intent. Qiandan refers to Lead Carbonate; some say it refers to Antelope Horn powder). Other substances remain undetermined. (Undetermined means the formula is incomplete).
Also treats sudden traumatic injury. After eating, there is pain and trembling in one side of the chest; drinking fluids causes the same. Upon confirming the condition matches, prepare this formula urgently.
Herbs: Sheng Ligeng (Fresh Plum Root, 1 jin, finely cut), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, 1 sheng, heart removed), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang, roasted).
The above five herbs are chopped. Boil in one dou of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. (Identical to Fan Wang).
Also Bentun Tang. Treats deficiency exhaustion with damage to the qi of the five Zang organs, wandering qi disturbing dreams, depletion of essence and luster, impotence, upward pulling of the lower abdomen with acute pain, sudden facial flushing, mood swings, deafness, and dull vision.
Herbs: Gegen (Kudzu Root, 8 liang, dried), Sheng Ligeng (Fresh Plum Root, cut 1 sheng), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 3 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 sheng, washed), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 3 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 liang), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 5 liang), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 2 jin), Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted).
The above nine herbs are chopped. Boil in two dou of water until five sheng remain. Take 8 ge warm, three times a day. If ineffective, gradually increase to one sheng, three times a day. Avoid mutton, malt sugar, raw scallions, seaweed, Brassica vegetables, etc. (Cited from Volume 11).
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve) treats sudden syncope with rebellious qi, qi supporting both hypochondria, pain and fullness below the heart, feeling as if about to die. This is called Ben Tun. The disease arises from sudden fright, terror, and anxiety. Qi rises from below, rushing up to the chest and heart. Pulsations around the umbilicus occur episodically. Without treatment, it is fatal.
Herbs: Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, 1 sheng), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 1 jin), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 sheng), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 3 liang).
The above six herbs are chopped. Boil in one dou of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. This medicine must be prepared in advance and taken immediately upon onset. (*Qianjin Fang* uses Guixin 5 liang, Gancao 3 liang; Zhang Wenzhong's formula is identical).
Four Formulas for Bentun Qi Rushing to Chest and Heart
*Guangji Fang* treats Bentun Qi in the heart, shortness of breath, aversion to hearing voices, mental restlessness and unease below the heart, episodic occurrence, limb vexation and pain, and cold extremities.
Herbs: Ligeng Baidi (White Bark of Plum Root, 8 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 7 liang, washed), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 4 liang), Fuling (Poria, 3 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted), Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 1 liang, processed), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 4 liang).
The above eight herbs are chopped. Boil in one dou of water until three sheng remain. Strain. Divide into three doses. Space each dose by the time it takes a person to walk six or seven li. Avoid cold/raw foods, mutton, malt sugar, seaweed, Brassica vegetables, greasy/vinegar foods, raw scallions, and sticky foods. (Identical to Fan Wang).
Also treats Bentun Qi in the chest and heart, pressing and fullness supporting the hypochondria.
Herbs: Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 1 jin), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 4 liang, washed with decoction), Guixin (Cinnamon Heart, 3 liang), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 2 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted), Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit, 1 liang).

Avoid raw scallions, hot noodles, mutton, malt sugar, sticky foods, seaweed, and Brassica vegetables. (Identical to Fan Wang, both cited from Volume 4).
*Jiyan Fang* Bentun Fuling Tang (Running Piglet Poria Decoction) treats shortness of breath, insufficiency of the five Zang organs, cold qi causing cold limbs, abdominal distension and fullness, qi rushing up to the chest and diaphragm, episodes where qi feels as if it will cease, aversion to cold, or vexation and heat.
Herbs: Fuling (Poria, 4 liang), Sheng Ge (Fresh Kudzu Root, 8 liang), Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 5 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 1 sheng, washed with decoction), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 3 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 liang), Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 2 liang), Ligeng Baidi (White Bark of Plum Root, cut 1 sheng).
The above nine herbs are chopped. Boil in one dou and two sheng of water until five sheng remain. Take one sheng, three times a day and two times at night. Avoid mutton, malt sugar, seaweed, Brassica vegetables, and vinegar products.
Also treats Bentun Qi rushing to the chest with abdominal pain, alternating chills and fever. Bentun Tang (Running Piglet Decoction).
Herbs: Gancao (Licorice Root, 2 liang, roasted), Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome, 2 liang), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2 liang), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, 4 liang, washed with decoction), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 3 liang), Sheng Ge (Fresh Kudzu Root, 5 liang).
The above six herbs are chopped. Boil in two dou of water until five sheng remain. Strain. Take one sheng warm, three times a day and two times at night. Avoid seaweed, Brassica vegetables, mutton, and malt sugar. (Both cited from Volume 4).
