Chapter: Twelve Formulas for Zephyr Wind (Zei Feng Fang)
Category: Formulas
[Translation]
In the etiology of disease, "Zephyr Wind" (Zei Feng, a pathogenic wind that strikes unexpectedly) refers to fierce winds blowing from the south on the day of Winter Solstice, known as "Deficient Wind" (Xu Feng). When this wind arrives, it can harm humans, hence it is called Zephyr Wind. Upon injuring the body, it manifests as severe pain that cannot be endured or pressed upon, and the body becomes immobile and unable to turn. The painful area has smooth skin without heat. If injured by cold wind-cold, there is deep bone pain, felt only upon pressure, accompanied by a sensation of internal chill and shivering. Applying hot objects to the painful area provides slight relief. Sometimes sweating occurs but persists for a long time; if re-exposed to cold wind, the two pathogens interact and condense, leading to scrofula (Luo Li, tuberculous lymphadenitis) and hemiplegia (Pian Ku). If interacting with wind-heat, it transforms into osteomyelitis/abscess of the bone (Fu Gu Ju) (From Volume 1).
*Shen Shi Fang* treats Zephyr Wind invading the abdomen, causing urgent pain in the five zang organs, four limbs, chest, and heart; back arching with coldness; dry throat; lockjaw; and upward deviation of the eyes. (This formula is originally Da Xuming Tang, differing only in dosage.)
