Black lead (Qianqian, 黑铅) six qian melted. Add Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银) two liang. Formed into sand-like particles. Calcined white alum (Kubai Fan, 枯白矾), calcined green vitriol (Kuzao Fan, 枯皂矾), saltpeter (Huoxiao, 火硝) each two liang. Table salt (Yan, 食盐) five qian. Stir-fried together until dry and ground fine. Add lead and mercury, grind again. The degree is when no star points are visible. Put into a jar sealed with mud. Seal the mouth. Fire for three incense sticks' time. Do not be too excessive or insufficient. Cool overnight. Take out. The elixir obtained at the jar mouth is white as snow. Approximately two liang. This indicates the fire control is moderate. If it turns purple, add Sulfur (Liuhuang, 硫黄) five qian. If yellow, add Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) five qian. If red, use Black lead (Qianqian, 黑铅) nine qian, Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银) one liang, Calcined alum (Kufan, 枯矾) two liang, Saltpeter (Huoxiao, 火硝) three liang, Cinnabar (Chensha, 辰砂) four qian, Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) three qian. Sublimation fire control as before.
Whenever sublimating elixirs, saltpeter must be stir-fried until dry, alum must be calcined.
One prescription uses rice wine to boil until dry, then stir-fry until dry, then grind and put into the jar.
Another method: After obtaining the elixir, add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) in double quantity, mix evenly, put back into a new jar and fire for one incense stick. It will not cause pain when used.
Family secret song for Shengji Bailingyao (Elixir for Generating Flesh, White): Lead powder replaced by Shan Qian; Official Borax replaced by Zao Fan; Saltpeter, Alum, Mercury remain unchanged; Fire control is also normal. (Jar sealing method see end of Volume 4).
Reverse Sublimation Method for Elixirs: First grind Saltpeter, Alum, and Mercury together until no star points are visible. Then use a mud-sealed jar, warm it slightly over low heat. Add one portion of medicine, melt slowly with gentle fire. Do not let bubbles form. Until dry, add another portion. Soon, add until finished. Add a little table salt. Slowly simmer until the alum becomes calcined and forms clumps. Invert the jar onto a flat-bottomed large bowl. The jar bottom should be two fingers higher than the bowl rim. Seal with paper strips. Then seal with mud about two fingers thick. Then fill with sand level with the bowl rim. Place the bowl in a large basin of water, level with the bowl rim. Then arrange red charcoal around the bottom and base of the jar. Burn one incense stick. Remove fire. Cool completely. Take out the elixir from around the jar and under the bowl. Approximately one qian and five or six fen. Use as needed. This method relies entirely on slow fire. Dryness causes errors.
Hongfen (Red Powder) treats all stubborn sores, as well as Yamei (Syphilis-related) powder toxicity, Hougan (Throat ulcer), Xiagan (Chancre),痘子 (Pox), etc. Immediate effect.
Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银), White Alum (Baifan, 白矾), Saltpeter (Huoxiao, 火硝) (each one liang and one qian); Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (three qian and three fen).
Heat a pot, remove from fire. Add White Alum, boil once until clear. Add Saltpeter, boil once until clear. Add Cinnabar, boil once until settled. Take out and grind into powder. Put into a pot. Add Mercury. Cover with a bowl.
Seal and sublimate as per method.
One prescription uses: Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银) (one liang), Niter (Yanxiao, 焰硝) (one liang, stir-fried dry to powder, use four qian five fen), White Alum (Baifan, 白矾) (one liang, calcined four qian five fen). Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (one qian, ground to powder).
Next, use two to three jin of sifted clean incense burner ash. Four to five jin of brine solution. Use as needed. Take a medium-sized new iron pot. Prop up with bricks. Place Cinnabar powder in the pot, size like lotus seeds. Next, grind Saltpeter and Alum powder evenly, cover the Cinnabar. Press the Saltpeter and Alum gently with an equal plate like a silver bottom. Surroundings the size of a tea bell mouth. Next, cover with a tea bell. If there is Saltpeter/Alum outside the mouth, blow it away. Lift the bell. Use chopsticks to gently poke a small pit in the middle of the Saltpeter/Alum. Use a tea spoon to pick up Mercury and put it into the pit. Cover again with the tea bell. Next, take the previous incense ash, mix with brine solution to proper consistency. Hold the tea bell with hand to prevent movement. Spread wet ash around. Only leave the bottom of the bell exposed. Press with stone. Then light fire under the pot. Burn three incense sticks. Two civil, one martial. Frequently check the ash. If slightly white appears, use palm fiber dipped in brine to brush the ash. Continue watering until three incense sticks are finished. Remove from fire, cool overnight. Use an axe to gently chisel open from the side. Take the tea bell. Wrap in yellow paper for storage. Scrape off when using.
The color of the powder frost must be that of Cinnabar. If red or yellow, it is immature. Applying to sores will cause pain. Must reseal and sublimate for one incense stick.
1. First, use Cinnabar powder and Ji Xing Zi (Fructus Cardiospermi, 急性子) each one qian five fen. Stir-fry in a pot until smoke disappears. Remove medicine, wipe clean. Add Saltpeter and Mercury. Sublimate as per method. This cleans the pot.
2. Use Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) and Red Halloysite (Chishizhi, 赤石脂) each two liang, ground to powder. Seal mouth with salt water paste. Cover with incense burner ash. Better.
3. Newly obtained Hongfen. Wrap in cotton paper. Put into a small Nanqing cloth bag. Use Mung Bean Water or Huaihua (Flos Sophorae, 槐花) eight liang, Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草) one liang decoction. Suspend and boil for one or two hundred boils. Take the bag, bury in yellow earth for one day and night. Remove fire toxicity and the qi of Saltpeter and Alum.
Xiagan (Chancre): Chew fine Tea leaves, apply three times. Then sprinkle powder. Immediately heals. Yamei Duzi (Syphilitic Pox): Dot with powder. Immediately heals. Yamei Hougan (Syphilitic Throat Ulcer): Use a new brush dipped in powder to dot. Immediately heals. Yamei Fendu (Syphilitic Powder Toxicity): Use Sesame Oil (Mayou, 麻油) four liang, Beeswax (Huangla, 黄蜡) one liang, melt into ointment. Warm after removing from fire. Add Hongfen one qian, mix evenly. Spread on cotton paper, apply. Change once a day. Immediate effect.
