When a carbuncle or swelling first appears, this medicine is specifically capable of dispersing pathogenic factors, smoothing Qi, searching out wind, and unblocking the meridians. This is what is meant by "opening that which is knotted" (using methods to open and dissipate stagnation). The Classics state: "Sweating will cure sores," which perfectly aligns with this principle. After taking it, one should avoid wind, refrain from cold foods, and abstain from sexual intercourse. Pregnant women should not take it.
[Prescription Verse] Wanling Dan treats various Bi syndromes; this medicine can also treat ulcerative swellings. It releases the exterior and expels toxic pathogens through sweating, with extraordinary efficacy in unblocking the meridians. Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Chuanwu), Aconiti Radix (Caowu), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Dendrobii Caulis (Shihu), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu), Scorpion (Quanxie), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Gastrodiae Rhizoma (Tianma), Polygoni Multiflori Radix (Heshouwu), and Realgar (Xionghuang) are combined.
For ulcerative swellings in their early stages, if the swelling is high, red, and painful, cool medicines should be applied to overcome heat with cold. However, it must not be excessive; otherwise, the toxin may be congealed by the cold, transforming into a Yin syndrome. If there is a diffuse swelling without redness, appearing to have a head but no pain, warm medicines should be applied to guide the toxin outward. The Classics state: "Releasing the exterior does not shun heat"; applying hot medicines is also a method of releasing the exterior. When preparing external applications, the mixture must be stirred frequently to ensure it is thick and sticky. After application, the paper covering must be torn off to prevent cracking. Moisten it occasionally with its own juice. Moisture helps open the pores; if dry, the medicinal qi cannot penetrate, causing additional stiffness and discomfort. When removing the external medicine, check for sweating at the pores, indicating that blood vessels are patent and heat is dissipating. The opposite condition is adverse.
