Yin Poison is caused by an excess of Yin and a lack of Yang, where the cold and desolate Qi of the season invades the skin and muscles, sinking into the bone marrow. This prevents Qi from ascending and Blood from circulating, causing stagnation in the meridians and resulting in pain that feels as if bones are being cut. Initially, there is no swelling or heat; symptoms are lighter in the morning and heavier in the evening. Over time, swelling appears and gradually turns red, ulcerating with black eschars, oozing foul-smelling pus, and emitting a putrid odor. The rot spreads until death is inevitable.
A thirty-year-old man had an illicit affair with a neighbor's wife in winter. Immediately after intercourse, the husband returned. In panic, the man jumped over a ditch into water while his body was still warm, exposing himself to cold. Five days later, he experienced deep pain in the lower abdomen and inner buttocks without swelling, crying out day and night. One month later, a black, sunken eschar appeared near the anus; all medications failed. Half a month later, the buttocks turned black and rotten with a foul smell, and the dry eschar contained no pus. Ten days later, his internal organs were completely destroyed, and he died from blackening and failure.
Another man, forty years old, enjoyed drinking strong liquor in summer and slept naked at night. He suffered unbearable yin-cold pain in his arms and back. One month later, a purple-red, hard-edged ulcerated patch appeared on his shoulder, resembling a red date, spreading daily. Half a month later, his arm and half his back formed a large black eschar with an unbearable stench; he died after one month of not eating.
A middle-aged obese man also drank strong liquor regardless of season, followed immediately by cold water before lying down. After one day, his neck became painful and slightly swollen, hard as stone. Two months later, his neck swelled to the size of his head, remaining stone-hard and cool. This was Yin Poison; he refused treatment and could not be cured. Later, other doctors treated him, considering the massive neck enlargement a strange disease, but he died from starvation. ...
Shi Rong (Loss of Prosperity) arises from prior wealth followed by loss, or from those in luxury whose desires are unfulfilled, damaging Middle Qi. Stagnant fire and phlegm accumulate due to blocked pathways. The lesion usually occurs above the shoulders. Initially, it presents as slight swelling with unchanged skin color. Over time, it grows larger, becoming hard as stone, immobile upon pushing or pressing. After six months to a year, yin-cold pain begins. Qi and Blood decline, the body emaciates, and the skin ulcerates with purple spots leaking bloody fluid. It may swell like a lotus flower, emitting a foul odor day and night. Existing nodules grow larger and harder despite ulceration. This condition is considered incurable. I formulated two prescriptions and treated several patients. Although complete cure was not achieved, they did not die prematurely; these are indeed life-extending medicines.
