Furthermore, when phlegm forms and obstructs the throat, it is called stubborn phlegm (Wan Tan). The prescription is as follows:
Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母) (3 qian), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) (3 qian), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (3 qian), Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (3 qian), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu, 神曲) (3 qian), Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (Ziwan, 紫菀) (2 qian), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗) (3 qian), Alumen (Bai fan, 白矾) (1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this formula lies in the simultaneous use of Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) and Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母); one dries dampness while the other moistens, leaving no place for phlegm to hide. Additionally, Alumen (Bai fan, 白矾) dissolves phlegm nodules, Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 桔梗) and Asteris Radix et Rhizoma (Ziwan, 紫菀) expel pathogenic factors, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) harmonizes the middle jiao. Is there any case where efficacy is not achieved?
Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子) (3 qian), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao, 白芍) (5 qian), Moutan Cortex (Danpi, 丹皮) (3 qian), Scrophulariae Radix (Yuanshen, 元参) (2 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
For excessive Heart Fire (Xin Huo), add Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) 1 qian; for excessive Stomach Fire (Wei Huo), add Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao, 石膏) 3 qian; for excessive Kidney Fire (Shen Huo), add Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母) each 1 qian; for excessive Lung Fire (Fei Huo), add Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) 1 qian; for excessive Large Intestine Fire (Dachang Huo), add... [Text incomplete]. Why does treating fire focus solely on the Liver Meridian? Because the Liver belongs to Wood, and Wood easily generates Fire. When Liver Fire (Gan Huo, 肝火) dissipates, the fire in all meridians dissipates. However, to dissipate fire, one must add herbs that drain fire downward.
For example, when a disease is in its initial stage, medication is originally easy to achieve efficacy. Unfortunately, people of the world fail to clearly identify symptoms, leading to chaotic medication, often resulting in a swarm of altered symptoms. If the diagnosis is accurate and the medication appropriate, how could there be altered symptoms? For instance, the symptoms of Wind-Cold invasion (Shang Feng, 伤风) necessarily include headache and body ache, cough with profuse sputum, and clear nasal discharge, pulse taking... Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 防风) (1 qian), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu, 柴胡) (1 qian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) (1 qian), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) (1 qian), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie, 荆芥) (1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
One dose is sufficient to stop the condition; a second dose is unnecessary.
In the initial stage of Cold Damage (Shang Han, 伤寒), there are nasal congestion, eye pain, stiffness of the neck, and headache. Pulse taking reveals a floating and tight pulse (Mai Fu Jin, 脉浮紧). This is Cold Damage (Shang Han, 伤寒). The prescription is as follows:
Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 桂枝) (1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (1 qian), Tangerine Peel (Chenpi, 陈皮) (1 qian), Kudzu Root (Gange, 干葛) (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally; cured in one dose.
If it is Food Retention (Shang Shi, 伤食), there is necessarily fullness and oppression in the heart/chest, aversion to seeing food, and increased pain after eating. The prescription is as follows:
Atractodis Rhizoma (Baizhu, 白术) (1 qian), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (1 qian), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao, 枳壳) (1 qian), Crataegi Fructus (Shanzha, 山楂) (20 seeds), Setariae Germ (Guya, 谷芽) (2 qian), Hordeum Germ (Maya, 麦芽)... [Text incomplete]. Two doses lead to recovery.
