The disease of Huhe (Erosion and Ulceration Syndrome) initially presents with symptoms resembling Taiyang disease (Exterior syndrome caused by pathogenic factors affecting the Taiyang channel). In some cases, it develops as a complication following Taiyang disease. The clinical manifestations include: silence and desire to sleep, yet inability to sleep despite closed eyes; restlessness in sitting and lying down. When parasites erode the throat, it is called "He" (Confusion/Ulceration); when they erode the yin organs or genitalia, it is called "Hu" (Fox/Erosion). Patients exhibit aversion to food and dislike the smell of food. Their facial complexion may appear either red or black.
For treating Huhe syndrome resulting from Taiyang disease, if the pulse is rapid (Shu), moxibustion is contraindicated. Improper use of fire therapy can exacerbate heat and irritability, causing blood to flow recklessly within the vessels and leading to excessive internal fire qi.
Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 1 liang) Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 3 fen, washed seven times in decoction to remove slipperiness) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang) Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, removed rhizome head) Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed and roasted) Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, fibers removed) Gancao (Licorice Root, 3 fen, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 3 fen)
Crush the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, 3 jujubes, and 0.5 jin of green bamboo shavings. Decoct until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating Huhe syndrome where sweating fails to occur after Taiyang disease, with toxic vapors lingering in the zang organs or attacking the throat, causing dry heaving, irritability, and aversion to food odors:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 liang, fibers removed) Xuncao (Agastaches Herba, 3 liang)
Finely chop the above ingredients. Soak overnight in 2 large cups of vinegar-fermented water. Decoct to obtain 1 large cup. Strain and divide into three doses. Take warm at any time.
For treating Taiyang disease where toxic vapors have not dissipated and are about to transform into Huhe syndrome, characterized by red eyes and mottled facial complexion like brocade patterns, administer Huanglian San:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, fibers removed) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 0.5 liang, chopped) Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 3 fen, shaved) Chuan Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 2 fen) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang) Daqing (Isatidis Folium, 0.5 liang) Fushen (Poria with Hostwood, 0.5 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped) Baihe (Lilii Bulbus, 3 fen)
Sift the above ingredients into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 14 leaves of bamboo. Decoct until reduced to 5/10. Strain and take warm at any time.
For treating Taiyang disease that has not been induced to sweat, transforming into Huhe syndrome after six or seven days without resolution. Symptoms include alternating chills and fever, fullness and pain in the chest and hypochondrium, silence and desire to sleep but inability to lie comfortably, and reluctance to speak.
