Xuan Yin (Hanging Phlegm-Fluid) is caused by deficiency-cold of the Zang-Fu organs, disharmony of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), and stagnation and fullness in the San Jiao (Triple Burner). Due to excessive drinking of water, fluid retention accumulates and fails to dissipate. The water flow moves into the hypochondriac region, causing distension in both hypochondria and pain in the ribs when coughing or spitting. Hence, it is called Xuan Yin (Hanging Phlegm-Fluid).
To treat Xuan Yin (Hanging Phlegm-Fluid) with symptoms of epigastric and abdominal stuffiness and fullness, water moving through the intestines, and radiating pain in both hypochondria, use the Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder) formula.
Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, one qianliang) Xuanfuhua (Flos Inulae, half qianliang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, half qianliang) Xixin (Herba Asari, half qianliang) Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae, half qianliang, washed seven times in boiling water to remove slipperiness) Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis, half qianliang, removed radix end) [Text missing herb name here] (half qianliang, processed, cracked, skin and umbilicus removed) Qianhu (Radix Peucedani, [text missing quantity])
The above ingredients are coarsely ground and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of four qian. Take one zhongzhan (approx. 200ml) of water, add half banfen (approx. 15g) of Shengjiang (Fresh Rhizoma Zingiberis), decoct until six fen remains, filter out the dregs. Take warm before meals.
