Cases where pox lesions invade the eyes are caused by toxic vapors steaming into the eyes due to contracting cold damage (Shanghan) or epidemic febrile diseases. The eyes feel dry and painful, with patchy yellow-red discoloration resembling the pattern of tortoiseshell. There is pain in the upper eyelids, and the eyes swell shut. At this stage, applying eye drops is contraindicated; one should wait for the pox eruptions to appear, after which the eye condition will gradually improve. Treatment should focus on benefiting the Spleen and Lung, resolving heat toxicity, and taking mild, cooling medicines in small doses. Alternatively, medicated patches can be applied to the upper and lower eyelids to disperse toxic vapors. If this principle is not understood and various eye drops are used indiscriminately, it may lead to corneal perforation, discharge of pus and blood, resulting in bilateral damage. After the pox lesions have subsided, applying eye drops is no longer a concern.
For pox lesions invading the eyes, presenting with redness, dryness, swelling, pain, or the gradual growth of nebulae (corneal opacity), the Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) formula is indicated.
Zhenzhu Mo (Pearl Powder, 1 fen)
Hupo (Amber, 1 fen, finely ground)
Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, 1 fen, finely ground)
Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, 2 qian, finely ground)
Tianzhuhuang (Spatholobi Caulis, 0.5 liang, finely ground)
Fuling (Poria, 0.5 liang)
Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen, 0.5 liang)
The above herbs are pounded into a fine powder through a silk sieve, mixed thoroughly with the finely ground ingredients. Each dose consists of 1 qian, taken after meals with decoction of Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf). Avoid fried, roasted, and hot-natured wheat products.
For pox lesions invading the eyes, presenting with severe pain, high fever, dry mouth, and irritability with thirst, the Chaihu San (Bupleurum Powder) formula is indicated.
