The liver opens into the eyes. When Liver Qi (vital energy of the liver) is deficient, heat-toxic qi (pathogenic heat and toxins) will take advantage of this deficiency to rush upward and attack the eyes. Consequently, the eyes become red and painful, or red nebulas (corneal opacities), white membranes, polyps, and sores may develop.
For treating epidemic febrile diseases where heat-toxin attacks the Liver, causing redness, dryness, and pain in the eyes, it is appropriate to consume Shengma San (Cimicifugae Powder).
Ingredients: Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Core), Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, removed rhizome head), Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Sanggen Baipi (Cortex Mori Radicis, chopped), Juemingzi (Semen Cassiae) (each half liang above), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, three liang).
Crush and sieve the aforementioned medicines to make a powder. Take five qian per dose. Add one large zhan of water, fourteen leaves of Zhuye (Leaf Bambusae), and fifty beans of Heidou (Semen Sojae Preparatum). Decoct until only one-fifth remains. Strain off the dregs. Take warm after meals.
For treating epidemic febrile diseases where heat-toxin has not been eliminated, resulting in mental restlessness and oppression, toxic qi attacking upward, and redness and swelling of both eyes, it is appropriate to consume Zhizi Ren San (Gardeniae Semen Powder).
Ingredients: Zhizi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, removed roots), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried until slightly yellow and pith removed), Longdan (Radix Gentianae, removed rhizome head), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped), Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, chopped and slightly fried) (each half liang above).
Crush and sieve the aforementioned medicines to make a powder. Take five qian per dose. Add one large zhan of water. Decoct until only one-fifth remains. Strain off the dregs. Take warm after meals.
For treating epidemic febrile diseases causing deficiency-heat in the Liver, with blurry vision, redness, and pain in the eyes, it is appropriate to consume Lingyangjiao San (Saiga Antelope Horn Powder).
Ingredients: Lingyangjiao Xie (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, shaved), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Core), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, removed rhizome head), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, removed heart), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried until slightly yellow and pith removed), Ruiren (Semen Pruni Armeniacae) (each half liang above).
