Heat disease is caused by the flourishing of heat-toxic qi, which attacks the stomach and intestines and penetrates into the blood level. Blood naturally flows and scatters when heated; combined with the deficiency of the large intestine, blood seeps into the intestinal tract, where it struggles with body fluids. Accumulated heat becomes trapped, transforming blood into pus, thereby forming dysentery with pus and blood.
For heat disease where toxic qi remains unresolved, characterized by high fever in the evening, passage of fresh blood in stool, continuous dysentery without respite, and inability to eat, the Rhinoceros Horn Powder (Xijiao San) is indicated.
Rhinoceros horn shavings (1 liang), Coptis chinensis Rhizome (Huanglian, 1 or 2 liang, remove stamens), Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu, 1.5 liang), Rubia cordifolia Root (Qiangen, 1 liang, cut), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 1 liang), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi ren, 0.5 liang).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one cup of water and 1-2 stalks of Allium macrostemon (Xiebai) until reduced to 60%. Strain and take warm at any time.
For heat disease with uncontrolled dysentery, mental restlessness, and irritability, the Coptis Decoction (Huanglian Yinzi) is indicated.
Coptis chinensis Rhizome (Huanglian, 1 liang, remove stamens, slightly stir-fry), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi ren, 20 seeds, crushed), Glycine max Seed (Chi, 2 he), Allium macrostemon (Xiebai, 2 he, cut).
Decoct the above herbs in two large cups of water until reduced to 1.3 cups. Strain and divide into three warm doses, taken at any time.
For heat disease toxic syndrome presenting with dysentery of red and white discharge and abdominal pain, the Angelica Sinensis Powder (Danggui San) is indicated.
Angelica sinensis Radix (Danggui, 2 liang, cut and stir-fried), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 1 liang, honey-fried until slightly reddish, cut), Coptis chinensis Rhizome (Huanglian, 2 liang, remove stamens, slightly stir-fried), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 1 liang, slightly roasted and stir-fried), Zingiberis Rhizoma Exsiccatum (Ganjiang, 1 liang, processed until cracked, cut), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao, 2 liang, crushed and stir-fried until yellow and dry), Punicis Pericarpium (Cu Shiliupi, 2 liang).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct with one large cup of water until reduced to 40%. Strain and take warm at any time.
For heat disease where toxic qi attacks the stomach and intestines, causing occasional bloody diarrhea, mental confusion, and delirious speech, the Cimicifugae Rhizoma Powder (Shengma San) is indicated.
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Shengma, 1 liang), Rheum Palmatum Radix (Chuan Dahuang, 0.5 liang, cut, crushed, and slightly stir-fried), Sanguisorbae Radix (Diyu, 0.5 liang, cut), Angelica sinensis Radix (Danggui, 3 fen), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishaoyao, 0.5 liang), Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhiqiao, 0.5 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow, remove pith), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 0.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly reddish, cut).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 3 qian per dose, decoct with one medium cup of water until reduced to 40%. Strain and take warm at any time.
For heat disease with persistent dysentery of pus and blood, the Madder Root Powder (Qiangen San) is indicated.
Rubia cordifolia Root (Qiangen, 1 liang), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 3 fen), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi ren, 1 fen), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao, 0.5 liang, crushed and stir-fried until yellow and dry).
Sieve the above herbs finely to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one medium cup of water until reduced to 60%. Strain and take warm at any time.

Red Halloysite (Chishizhi, 2 liang, crushed), Glycine max Seed (Chi, 1 he), Allium macrostemon (Xiebai, 3 stalks, cut), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi ren, 7 seeds).

Sieve the above herbs finely to make a powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with rice broth. Take at any time.
For heat disease occurring six or seven days later, where toxic qi does not dissipate and dysentery of pus and blood persists, the Deer Antler Gelatin Powder (Lujiaojiao San) is indicated.
Deer Antler Gelatin (Lujiaojiao, 1 liang, crushed and stir-fried until yellow and dry), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 0.5 liang, remove stamens, slightly stir-fried), Coptis chinensis Rhizome (Huanglian, 0.5 liang, remove stamens, slightly stir-fried), Plumbum Bismuthicum (Hufen, 0.5 liang, stir-fried until yellow), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi ren, 1 liang), Os Draconis (Longgu, 0.5 liang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly reddish, cut).
