Mao Gui disease is said to be the spirit of old foxes or other wild animals, transforming into a ghost that bewitches and attaches itself to women. People keep and serve it like poison insects (Gu), using it to harm people with toxicity. The symptoms of this illness include painful stabbing sensations in the heart and abdomen due to accumulation, erosion of the five Zang organs, vomiting and defecating blood, leading to death.
To treat Mao Gui disease, if the patient has seen a cat or fox, or heard related rumors and harbors thoughts of them, use the Xiangsi Wan (Yearning Seed Pill) formula:
Xiangsi Zi (One seed) [Calabash Seeds]
Bixing Zi (One seed) [Castor Bean Seed]
Badou (One seed, skin and heart removed) [Croton Seed]
Zhusha Mo (One "zi" measure) [Cinnabar Powder]
La (One fen) [Beeswax]
Grind all the above ingredients thoroughly until well-mixed. First, take a pill the size of a sesame seed and hold it in the mouth. Immediately surround the front of the patient's head with ash. Spit the medicine into the ash as it comes out. Stop when the medicine is fully expelled. Draw a cross on the ash; the Mao Gui spirits will all die.
To treat Mao Gui and "Wild Path" diseases, characterized by uncontrollable weeping and laughing:
Take a red snake that died naturally on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, burn it to ash, and grind it finely. In the early morning, administer two qian with Jinghua Shui (first-drawn well water).
Another prescription:
Mix lard from the twelfth lunar month with ash from children's hair. Take one qian mixed with warm wine.
During summer months when it is hot, if people travel along roads, heat toxins enter the interior and bind with the five Zang organs. Pathogenic factors become rampant, stifling Yang Qi and causing sudden blockage, leading to blocked meridians and collaterals. Thus, the person suddenly faints and feels suffocated, which is referred to as "Heat Zhong" (Heat Stagnation/Sunstroke). However, this is caused by external pathogens striking the body; recovery occurs when the true Zang Qi becomes unblocked. Patients suffering from this heat condition should not be kept too cold; exposure to cold causes distress. This is because sudden external cold triggers the internal heat, causing an attack, leading to death by suffocation/fainting.
Treatment for Heat Zhong with chest stuffiness:
Administer warm water to drink. Alternatively, boil equal parts of Chenpi (Tangerine Peel) and Gancao (Licorice Root) to make a decoction. Sip slowly; do not drink large amounts at once. It is best to cover the patient's navel with heated earth or heated ash soil.
Another prescription:
Boil Liao (Smartweed/Polygonum) strongly, extract one da zhen (large cup) of juice, and divide into two doses to drink. The patient recovers.
Another prescription:
Take one zhong zhen (medium cup) of fresh Shengdihuang Juice (Rehmannia Root Juice), warm it, and administer.
Another prescription:
Take one liang of flour, mix with one zhong zhen of warm water, stir well, and administer.
Another prescription:
Drink one zhen of Dijiang (Earth Water/Soil Solution) to recover.
Another prescription:
Huanglian (Half liang, remove root hairs) [Coptis Rhizome]
Add one da zhen of water, decoct until only five-fen remains. Remove the dregs and administer warm.
