Hongjiao (Gout-like disorder) with Bi (Obstruction) and spasm is caused by the simultaneous invasion of Wind, Cold, and Dampness pathogens into the muscle intervals. This prevents the normal circulation of True Qi, resulting in Bi syndrome. When Wind pathogen predominates, swelling occurs. If the condition is mild, it is easy to cure. Pain accompanied by itching, shortness of breath, or lack of muscular control often indicates a deficiency pattern. In such cases, if one mistakenly uses toxic-clearing methods while tonifying deficiency, the toxin will become excessive. Therefore, treatment must anticipate potential deficiency and should not be treated equally as excess patterns.
For Hongjiao with Bi and spasm, where limbs are immobile, Wind-toxin attacks the four limbs, causing high fever like fire, stiffness and spasm of the head and neck, and Qi rushing to the chest, Da Xuming Tang (Great Continuation Life Decoction) is indicated.
