Wuling San (Five-Ling Powder) is the treasure among medicines, specifically treating Taiyang Cold Damage (Taiyang Shanghan) with great efficacy.
When Yang syndromes present, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction)'s key herb, Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi), must be removed; when Yin syndromes present, Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) is added, and decocted thickly with water.
For delirious speech, add Cinnabar powder (Chensha Mo); for headache and eye pain, add Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong).
For increased coughing, add Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi); for unsettled Heart Qi (Xinqi Buding), add Ophiopogonis Radix (Mendong).
For vomiting and reflux in the Stomach (Weizhong ouni), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) is excellent; for abundant phlegm, Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) meets it favorably.
For calming asthma, Aristolochiae Fructus (Madouling) is best; Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu) removes dampness, emptying the abdomen (resolving distension).
For astringent and obstructed urination, add Diantherae Herba (Qumai); Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) can facilitate bowel movement.
For qi masses in the abdomen, use Bupleuri Radix (Sanleng) and Zedoary Rhizome (Ezhu); Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Qingpi) can dissipate heat as quickly as roasting.
Using the roots of Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang Yegen) eliminates night sweats; for redness and swelling in the lower body, Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Shanjiaohong) is effective.
For thirst after drinking water, add Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gange); for epistaxis (Bini), Arisaematis Rhizoma preparatum (Wuyao) proves efficacious.
For yellow eyes, stir-fried Coptidis Rhizoma (Yinchen) is used; for relapse due to overexertion (Laofu), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) shows miraculous effects.
For red eyes, add Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao); Coptidis Rhizoma (Yinchen) reduces swelling and pairs with Chishao.
If the eyes are red and painful, use Gypsum Fibrosum powder (Shigao Mo); Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) stops thirst and works in concert with Shigao.
To urgently treat water retention, use Semen Lepidii et Descurainiae (Tingli); for latent summerheat, use Junci Medulla (Dengxin) soaked in water.
These twenty-four patterns are truly wonderful principles; devoted treatment yields boundless efficacy.
Case Report on Seasonal Toxins: In the second year of Taihe, my master served as the tax collector for salt tribute in Yuanji. It was April, and an epidemic was prevalent among the people. Initially, patients felt chills and heaviness in the body, which then progressed to severe swelling of the head and face, inability to open the eyes, upward panting, throat obstruction, dry tongue, and dry mouth. This was commonly known as "Big Head Epidemic" (Datou Tianxing). Relatives avoided visiting each other, and once infected, most could not be saved. The nephew of Magistrate Zhang also contracted this disease. By the fifth or sixth day, physicians used Chengqi Tang (Major Order of the Qi Decoction) plus Isatidis Radix (Banlangen) to purge, resulting in slight relief. The next day, the condition remained unchanged; upon purging again, there was slight relief, but ultimately it did not cure, and the patient gradually became critical. Someone said, "Li Mingzhi is dedicated to medicine; you should invite him to treat." So, he was summoned to examine the patient and explained the pathology. My master said, "The upper half of the body corresponds to the Qi of Heaven, and the lower half to the Qi of Earth. Here, pathogenic heat lodges between the Heart and Lung, attacking upwards to cause severe swelling of the head and eyes. Using Chengqi Tang to purge clears excess heat from the Stomach, which is punishing the innocent (unaffected areas), ignoring the actual location of the pathogen." Therefore, he prescribed the following: Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), bitter and cold, to clear heat from the Heart and Lung, serving as the Sovereign (Jun) herbs; Juhong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), neutral in flavor; Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), bitter and cold; Sheng Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), sweet and cold, to clear fire and tonify Qi, serving as the Minister (Chen) herbs; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Boheye (Menthae Haplocalycis Folium), bitter, pungent, and neutral; Banlangen (Isatidis Radix), bitter and cold; Mabo (Fly Agaric? No, Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae / Lycopodium? Actually *Ma Bo* refers to *Lycoperdon* or similar, WHO term: *Lycoperdon* or *Pleurotus*? Standard is *Lycoperdon* or *Calvatia*. Let's use *Lycoperdon Sporangium* or simply *Ma Bo*). Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), bitter and neutral, to dissipate swelling, detoxify, and calm asthma, serving as the Assistant (Zuo) herbs; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), bitter and neutral, to unblock the Shaoyang and Yangming meridians where Qi cannot extend freely; Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), acrid and warm, acting as a boat and oar to prevent downward transmission. All were ground into fine powder. Half was mixed with water and taken frequently; half was made into honey pills for sucking. After finishing the course, the patient recovered completely. He sighed, saying, "What is past cannot be retrieved, but what is future can still be achieved." For all other patients with this disease, he applied this formula, saving many lives. People at the time said this formula was created by heaven and humanity.
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (each 0.5 liang), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) (3 qian), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Juhong), Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen), Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Sheng Gancao), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng) (each 2 qian), Forsythiae Fructum (Lianqiao), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi), Isatidis Radix (Banlangen), Lycoperdon Sporangium (Mabo) (each 1 qian), Bombyx Batryticatus (Bai Jiangcan) (stir-fried), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (each 7 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Administer as previously described. Alternatively, add Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Menthae Haplocalycis Folium (Bohe), and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui Shen). Cut into pieces the size of hemp seeds. Each dose weighs 5 qian, decocted with two cups of water.
For severe swelling, scarification (Bianci) is appropriate.
