[Verse] Although the Spleen and Kidney are distinguished as the Post-Heaven (acquired) and Pre-Heaven (innate) foundations respectively, Yin and Yang, Qi and Blood are always interdependent. For thin individuals with excessive internal heat, clearing and purifying methods are appropriate; for those with spontaneous sweating, nourishing Yin harmonizes naturally. Anger injures the Liver, often causing vomiting and regurgitation, poor movement of the fetal origin, lethargy, and hypersomnia. In such cases, one should only resolve depression/stagnation to calm the fetal Qi, nourish Blood, and harmonize the Middle Jiao, so that the disease heals spontaneously.
[Discussion] The Spleen is the head of the Post-Heaven foundation, and the Kidney is the root of the Pre-Heaven foundation. During pregnancy, the Spleen is impeded, leading to slow transformation and transportation, resulting in Dampness. Dampness generates Heat. Therefore, Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) is used to strengthen the Spleen and dry Dampness, and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) is used to clear Heat and calm the fetus. This formula is suitable for those who are thin, have blood heat, rapid Ying (Nutritive) circulation, upward pressing of the fetus causing restlessness, poor appetite, sallow complexion, and fatigue/weakness. If there is fire hyperactivity, dry mouth, fever, spontaneous sweating, irritability, and abdominal pain, it is better to use Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to nourish Blood. If the person is irritable, prone to anger, has a solid physique, abundant Qi, dark complexion, chest fullness, vomiting/regurgitation, abdominal pain, and stagnant fetal movement, Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) and Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) should be used to resolve stagnation. The Kidney is the root of the Chong (Penetrating) and Ren (Conception) vessels. In men, it stores Essence; in women, it anchors the Bao (Uterus). If Kidney deficiency causes softness of the waist and weakness in the legs and knees, Liu Wei Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) with Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) removed, plus Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) and Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), is appropriate. Thus, strengthening the Spleen, nourishing Blood, resolving stagnation, and tonifying the Kidney are different treatments, yet they follow the principle of mutual generation among the Five Elements, cycling endlessly, and are consistent throughout. Ultimately, the goal is to make Qi and Blood peaceful, without excess or deficiency.
