During childbirth, excessive exertion leads to fatigue and injury to the Spleen. (The Classics state: The Spleen is a central Zang organ.) As the central Zang organ, the Spleen cannot distribute essence to the four peripheries. (The four peripheries refer to the Heart, Liver, Lungs, and Kidneys.) Consequently, there is Qi reversal with Jue (cold extremities) and upward movement of Qi. (The Classics state: Upward-moving rebellious Qi causes fullness in the vessels and separation of Shen from the form.) The Classics also say: When Yang Qi declines at the upper part, it results in Cold Jue. At this stage, Shen Qi floats and becomes disordered, about to leave the body and dissipate. Without major tonification, it is impossible to restore Yang and revive the Shen. How could merely a few qian of Chuanxiong and Danggui be able to support and rescue the nearly exhausted Qi and Blood? One must use Jiashen Shenghua Tang (Ginseng-Added Decoction for Generating New Blood), doubling the dosage of Renshen (Ginseng), and administering it continuously for two or three doses. Then, when Qi and Blood become robust, Shen Qi will generate, and Jue will cease naturally. If thirst occurs after taking the medicine, use a larger amount of Renshen alone, or prepare Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder) as tea to assist in rescuing dryness of the Zang organs. This is an empirically verified conclusion; do not dispute it. In cases where the four limbs are cold, accompanied by diarrhea or dysentery resembling Yin syndromes of Cold Damage, Si Ni Tang (Counterflow Decoction) may be difficult to apply. Instead, use Renshen Shenghua Tang (Ginseng-Decoction for Generating New Blood) with one slice of Fuzi (Aconite Root) to restore Yang and stop rebellion. This allows the benefits of Renshen and Danggui to take effect while avoiding adverse reactions. Below are two formulas provided separately: one for postpartum Jue with persistent abdominal masses/pain (excluding Baizhu), and one for postpartum Jue where abdominal masses/pain have ceased.

Chuanxiong (2 qian), Renshen (2 qian), Danggui (4 qian), Zhi Gancao (Roasted Licorice Root, 5 fen), Jiangtan (Charred Ginger, 4 fen), Taoren (Peach Kernel, 12 grains), Dazao (Jujube, 2 pieces). Take continuously for two doses.

Formula for Postpartum Jue where Abdominal Masses/Pain Have Ceased:
Renshen (3 qian), Danggui (3 qian), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Chuanxiong (1 qian each), Zhi Gancao (4 fen), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, 4 fen), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, 10 grains), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 2 qian), Fuzi (0.5 qian). If sweating is excessive, add Mahuanggen (Ephedra Root) and Suanzaoren (Ziziphus Seed, 1 qian each). If constipation occurs, add Rongzhu (Cistanche Stem).

Generally speaking, the two conditions of postpartum fainting (Yun) and Jue are similar, both resulting from the simultaneous exhaustion of Qi and Blood, where Shen is about to depart and vital functions are nearly suspended, leaving only a thread of life. Unless heavy doses are administered urgently, how can the nearly extinct Yuan Shen (Original Spirit) be recovered? However, fainting occurs during labor, making the condition urgent; although more severe than Jue, frequent administration of Shenghua Tang for several doses first replenishes the deficiency in the Blood aspect. Subsequently, the masses dissolve, blood becomes abundant, Shen clears, and fainting stops, restoring the mother's spirit. In cases of excessive sweating, shortness of breath, and signs of physical collapse, Renshen and Huangqi must be added. Conversely, Jue occurs after delivery, characterized by dual exhaustion of Qi and Blood. It is appropriate to use Jiashen Shenghua Tang with doubled Renshen to simultaneously tonify the deficiencies of Qi and Blood, stopping Jue to restore Shen. This cannot be cured by merely tonifying the Blood aspect. In summary, if fainting is accompanied by abdominal masses/pain, Huangqi and Baizhu should not be added immediately; if Jue occurs without abdominal masses/pain, the combined use of Huangqi, Baizhu, and Shudihuang is undoubtedly correct.
