Wu Cheng's wife, while pregnant, was frightened and subsequently developed palpitations (Ji, palpitations). The physician believed the pathology was internal, causing the Shen Spirit to scatter, and deemed it incurable. Shen Zongchang attributed it to damage of the Gallbladder, prescribed Bao Dan Wan (Gallbladder-Protecting Pill), and she recovered.
Da Sheng San (Great Sage Powder): Treats pregnancy with Zheng Ji (palpitations with anxiety), frequent fright during sleep, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, and restlessness in sitting or lying down.
Ingredients: Bai Fu Ling (Poria, peeled), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogon Root, heart removed), Huang Qi (Astragalus Root, radicle removed, honey-fried), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis, radicle removed, wine-soaked), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong, each 1.5 qian), Mu Xiang (Aucklandia, not roasted over fire), Ren Shen (Ginseng), Gan Cao (Licorice, roasted, each 1 qian).
Preparation: Combine as one dose. Add two zhong of water and five slices of fresh ginger. Decoct until one zhong remains. Take at any time.
Bao Dan Wan: (For miscellaneous diseases involving Dian syndrome, epilepsy.)
*Da Quan* states: A pregnant woman who does not speak is not necessarily ill. In rare cases like this, medication is unnecessary. One month before delivery, simply administer Bao Sheng Wan (Life-Preserving Pill) or Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction). Speech will return naturally after delivery; this is a natural physiological process, not due to medicinal efficacy. Physicians do not disclose this. They give ordinary medicine near term, and when speech returns postpartum, they claim credit. This is hardly their merit.
The Yellow Emperor asked: Why does a woman lose her voice in the ninth month of pregnancy? Qibo replied: The collaterals of the uterus are obstructed. The Emperor asked: How so? Qibo said: The uterine collaterals connect to the Kidney Shaoyin meridian, which passes through the Kidney and ties to the root of the tongue; thus, speech is impaired. The Emperor asked: How to treat it? Qibo said: No treatment is needed. It will recover by the tenth month.
Hao Weng's case record is found under the preceding "Observing Fetal Status" section.
(Attached: Dry Mouth)
*Da Quan* states: Pregnancy complicated by vexation and oppression occurs because in the fourth month, the body receives the Qi of Shaoyin Jun Fire to nourish Jing (Essence), and in the sixth month, it receives the Qi of Shaoyang Xiang Fire to nourish Qi. If the mother experiences fear and gallbladder cold, she often suffers from vexation, termed Zi Fan (Fetal Vexation). *Chan Bao* states: Fetal vexation arises from Lung deficiency allowing Heat to invade the Heart, causing mental distress. Accumulated phlegm-fluids between the heart and chest, or rushing upward to the heart, also cause vexation. If caused by Heat, there is merely fever. If caused by phlegm-fluids, there is vomiting of saliva/foam, aversion to food odors, and restless agitation. Generally, in pregnancy, if phlegm-fluids accumulate and cold/heat contend, causing Qi stagnation, symptoms may include vexation, vomiting of saliva/foam, and in severe cases, fetal restlessness. All are termed Zi Fan.
Xue Ji comments: For the above syndromes, if due to internal Heat, use Zhu Ye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction). If due to Qi stagnation, use Zi Su Yin (Perilla Infusion). If due to Phlegm obstruction, use Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) modified with Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala), Huang Qin (Scutellaria), and Zhi Ke (Bitter Orange). If due to Qi depression, use Fen Qi Yin (Qi-Separating Infusion) modified with Chuan Xiong. If Spleen/Stomach deficiency, use Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six Gentlemen Decoction) modified with Zi Su (Perilla) and Shan Zhi (Gardenia).
Case: A pregnant woman suffered vexation-heat, expectorated phlegm, had anorexia, nausea, and dizziness. This was Spleen deficiency with Wind-Phlegm. She used Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang (Pinellia, Atractylodes, and Gastrodia Decoction - for miscellaneous vertigo) to tonify Yuan Qi and expel Wind, gradually recovering, though dizziness persisted. Then, Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) modified with Man Jing Zi (Vernonia Fruit) was used to raise and tonify Yang Qi, resulting in cure.
Zhu Ye Tang: Treats pregnancy with heart fright and gallbladder timidity, constant vexation, termed Zi Fan.
Ingredients: Bai Fu Ling (3 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia), Mai Men Dong (heart removed), Huang Qin (each 2 qian).
Preparation: Combine as one dose. Add two zhong of water and five bamboo leaves. Decoct until one zhong remains. Take at any time.

Preparation: Combine as one dose. Add two zhong of water and half a qian of Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry Root Bark). Decoct until one zhan remains. Add a little Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), boil for two or three boils, and take at any time.
Mai Men Dong Tang: Treats pregnancy with heart fright, gallbladder timidity, and vexation, termed Zi Fan.
Ingredients: Mai Men Dong (heart removed), Bai Fu Ling, Fang Feng (each 3 qian), Ren Shen (Ginseng, 1.5 qian).

Preparation: Add two large zhan of water. Decoct until 1.5 zhan remains. Strain, take warm, divided into three doses.
Yi Mu Wan: Treats pregnancy where prior medication caused fetal unrest, resembling empty vexation and inability to lie down. Chao Shi termed this Zi Fan. (Related to childbirth/lactation.)
Ingredients: Zhi Mu (2 liang, washed and dried).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder. Make pills with Jujube flesh, size of a bullet. Each dose: one pill. Swallow with Ren Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction).
Physicians who fail to recognize this syndrome and treat it as empty vexation will inevitably damage the fetal Qi.
[Vexation and Dry Mouth]
The Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian connects to the mouth; the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian connects to the tongue. In pregnancy, if Zang-Fu Qi is deficient, Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are disordered, and Yin/Yang are severed, Heat invades the Heart and Spleen, depleting fluids, causing vexation and dry mouth.
Xue Ji comments: For the above syndromes, if Stomach Meridian Excess Fire, use Zhu Ye Shi Gao Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Gypsum Decoction). If Stomach Meridian Deficiency Heat, use Ren Shen Huang Qi San (Ginseng and Astragalus Powder). If Stomach Meridian Qi Deficiency, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang. If Lung Meridian Deficiency Heat, use Zi Su Yin. if Liver Meridian Fire Stirring, use Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (Modified Free and Easy Wanderer Powder). if Spleen Qi Depression, use Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction). if Kidney Meridian Fire Stirring, use Jia Wei Di Huang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill).
Case: A pregnant woman with vexation-heat and throat pain used Zhi Mu San (Anemarrhena Powder) modified with Shan Zhi to clear the Lung Meridian and recovered. Later, internal heat cough and urinary incontinence occurred. She used Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang modified with Mai Men Dong and Shan Zhi to tonify Lung Qi and nourish Kidney Water, resulting in recovery.
