[Da] To treat bell-like rumbling in the abdomen of a pregnant woman, take soil from before and after a mouse hole, grind it into fine powder, mix with Moschus (Musk), and administer two qian mixed with wine; the parturient will be cured immediately.
*Supplementary Records* To treat fetal crying within the womb of a pregnant woman, decoct Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) thickly, and let the mother sip it frequently.
[Xue] According to *Baoyuan*, when a fetus cries in the womb, the treatment also involves using soil from a mouse hole in an empty room or drinking thick decoction of Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian), which stops the crying. I believe this refers to the aforementioned condition. It is also stated: A nodule on the umbilical cord may be held in the mouth by the fetus. If the pregnant woman climbs high and raises her arms, the nodule may slip out of the fetus's mouth, causing noise. Instruct the pregnant woman to bend her waist and touch the ground as if picking up an object; once the nodule re-enters the fetus's mouth, the crying stops. However, since Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) is cold in nature and Moschus (Musk) opens orifices, their use should be carefully considered.
[Su] The Yellow Emperor asked: How should toxic drugs be used for a pregnant woman? Qibo replied: When there is a disease, the disease receives the toxicity, so neither the mother nor the fetus is harmed. The Emperor said: I wish to hear the reason; what does this mean? Qibo said: For large accumulations and masses, attacking methods may be used, but stop when more than half of the pathogen has been eliminated; exceeding this limit leads to death. From *Zhi Yao Yuan Lun*.
[Dan] Blood stasis clumps like a plate are difficult to treat with harsh agents during pregnancy; this formula governs such cases.
Rhizoma Cyperi (Xiangfu) (boiled in vinegar, 4 liang) Semen Persicae (Taoren) (deprived of skin and tip, 1 liang) Calx Maris (Haifen) (boiled in vinegar, 2 liang) Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) (1 liang)
Grind the above into powder, make pills with wheat paste, and swallow.
This treats abdominal abscess during pregnancy with immediate effect.
Radix Linderae (Wuyao) (ground; soft, white, fragrant, and spicy varieties are good)
Take 5 qian, add one cup of water and one piece of Ox Hide Glue (Niujiaojiao), decoct together until reduced to 0.7 cups, and take warm.
*Supplementary Records* To treat abscess during pregnancy. Decoct Coicis Semen (Yiyiren) juice and drink it.
[Xue] Note: Pregnancy abscess is essentially an internal abdominal abscess. If the previous methods are ineffective, use Radix Moutan Powder (Mudanpi San) or Coicis Decoction (Yiyiren Tang). (Formulas see Surgery Internal Abscess section).
[Jing] states: If food intake doubles, the intestines and stomach are injured. Also: The generation of Yin essence originates from the Five Flavors. The five Yin organs (palaces of Yin) are injured by the Five Flavors. If a pregnant woman does not regulate her diet, consuming raw, cold, or toxic substances, and indulges in eating, it injures the Spleen and Stomach. Therefore, treating food stagnation in pregnancy is difficult regarding medication; only these two formulas are most stable and effective. (Muxiang Wan, Baizhu San.)
[Dongyuan] stated: When Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is strong, one does not feel hungry past normal times, and excessive eating does not cause injury. The Stomach governs reception, and the Spleen governs digestion; they are the root of the five Zang organs. However, injury from excessive food intake is due to deficiency of Spleen Qi and failure to transform. If harsh agents are administered, the Spleen and Stomach will be further injured, and the Fetus damaged. One must examine the cause and treat accordingly. If food stagnates or causes abdominal pain, use Pingwei San. For vomiting and nausea, add Fructus Aurantii (Zhike) and Fructus Amomi (Sharen). For acid regurgitation and belching of rotten food, add Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian) 3 fen and Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu) 2 fen. For abdominal fullness and diarrhea, use Liujunzi Tang. For meat stagnation, double the amount of Fructus Crataegi (Shanzha). For flour stagnation, double the amount of Frumentum Germinatum (Maiya). For glutinous rice stagnation, use only endosperm of Saccharomyces (Jiuqu) alone. For rice stagnation, double the amount of Oryzae Fructus Germinatus (Guyajia). For damage from fishy odors, double the amount of Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi). For damage from pungent and hot substances, add Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian). For damage from raw and cold substances, add Fructus Amomi (Sharen) and Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang); if ineffective, add Semen Myristicae (Roudoukou) and Fructus Psoraleae (Buguzhi); if still ineffective, use Sishen Wan. If Spleen Qi sinks, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang. Whenever one feels repulsed by the smell of medicine, cease medication and regulate diet. The Classics state: For those whose Spleen is damaged, regulate their diet and adapt to temperature changes. Generally, for weak Spleen and Stomach and difficulty digesting food, equal parts of Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) and Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi) ground into powder, made into pills with aged yeast paste, taken regularly is best. Zhizhu Wan can only be used temporarily; Rhizoma Immaturae Citri Reticulatae (Zhishi) is harsh and consumes true Qi; practitioners must be cautious.
A pregnant woman suffered from food stagnation and took Zhizhu Wan, resulting in chest and abdominal discomfort and decreased appetite. She then took digestive and middle-journey-widening agents, causing the fetus to descend. I reasoned this was due to deficient Spleen Qi failing to support. I used Buzhong Yiqi Tang and Liujunzi Tang; as Middle Qi gradually strengthened, the fetus stabilized. Subsequently, using Bazhen Tang added with Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu) and Radix Leonuri (Shengma), she recovered through regulation.
Muxiang Wan Treats women with pregnancy complicated by food stagnation.
Radix Aucklandiae (Muxiang) (2 qian) Rhizoma Sparganii (Sanleng) Radix Ginseng (Renshen) Poria (Fuling) (each 3 qian)
Grind into fine powder, make pills with wheat paste the size of mung beans. Swallow 30-40 pills with cooked water.
Baizhu San Treats pregnancy with disharmonious Qi and susceptibility to dietary injury.
Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) (stir-fried) Folium Perillae (Zisu) (each 1 liang) Radix Ginseng (Renshen) Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi) (stir-fried, each 7.5 qian) Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) Pericarpium Terminaliae Chebulae (Heqipi) Exocarpium Citri Grandis (Qingpi) (each 0.5 liang) Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) (2.5 qian)
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, with one cup of water and three slices of Zingiberis Rhizoma (Shengjiang), decoct to 0.7 cups, and take warm.
*Xiaoxiang Wan* from *Ju Fang* (for miscellaneous dietary injuries) and *Baoqi San* (for postpartum confinement) both have excellent effects for treating food stagnation.
Zhengshi Shengjin San Treats pregnant women whose fetus is injured by food, transmitting to the Spleen and Stomach, causing Qi deficiency and cold pressure, leading to lower abdominal distension and pain, heavy sensation in the waist, or constipation.
Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu) (soaked in wine) Purified Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chenpi) Radix Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong) Rhizoma Zingiberis (Ganjiang) (processed) Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) (sliced and baked, each 1.5 qian) Honey-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gancao) Rhizoma Magnoliae Officinalis (Houpo) (ginger-processed, each 3 qian)
Grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, swallowed with old rice decoction; adding salt during decoction is especially good. *Jisheng* adds Fructus Amomi (Sharen).
