To treat postpartum lochia (postpartum vaginal discharge) attacking upward and flowing into the Lung Meridian, causing coughing, this prescription is suitable. If it is a phlegm-cough caused by wind-cold invasion, it should be treated primarily with ordinary wind-cold medicines.
*Zhi Mu* (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), *Bei Mu* (Fritillariae Bulbus), *Bai Fu Ling* (Poria), *Ren Shen* (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 liang); *Tao Ren* (Persicae Semen), *Xing Ren* (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (both raw, peeled and removing tips, each 1 fen).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1.5 zhan of water, decoct until 0.8 zhan remains, and take warm at any time. If abdominal pain is felt, take it together; there will be immediate miraculous effect.
To treat postpartum contraction of wind-cold pathogen, coughing with profuse phlegm, and sticky sputum. (Same as recorded in *Chan Bao*)
*Gan Cao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), *Ku Jie* (Platycodonis Radix) (each 6 fen); *Kuan Dong Hua* (Farfarae Flos) (4 fen); *Sheng Mai Men Dong* (Ophiopogonis Radix raw), *Sheng Di Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 12 fen); *Cong Bai* (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) (one handful); *Chi* (Sojae Semen Preparatum) (2 he, old prescriptions do not include Cong Bai and Chi).
Chop the above ingredients, decoct 2 sheng of water to obtain 8 he, remove the dregs. Divide into two doses after meals.
To treat coughing with profuse phlegm, sticky sputum, and rapid breathing.
*Qian Hu* (Peucedani Radix), *Wu Wei Zi* (Schisandrae Fructus), *Zi Wan* (Asteris Radix), *Bei Mu* (Fritillariae Bulbus) (each 6 fen); *Sang Bai Pi* (Mori Cortex), *Fu Ling* (Poria) (each 8 fen); *Dan Zhu Ye* (Lophatheri Folium) (20 leaves).
Chop the above ingredients, decoct 2 sheng of water to obtain 8 he, remove the dregs. Divide into two doses after meals.
To treat postpartum cough and asthma.
*Bai Bu Gen* (Stemonae Radix), *Ku Jie* (Platycodonis Radix) (each 6 fen); *Sang Bai Pi* (Mori Cortex) (20 fen); *Gan Bai He* (Lilii Bulbus dried), *Chi Fu Ling* (Poria with red bark) (each 8 fen).
Chop the above ingredients, decoct 2 sheng of water to obtain 7 he, remove the dregs. Divide into two doses after meals.
The discussion states: What is the cause of rapid breathing and panting in the throat after childbirth? The answer is: Ying (Nutrient Qi) is blood, and Wei (Defensive Qi) is qi. Ying circulates within the vessels, while Wei circulates outside the vessels, moving up and down together, which is called Ying-Wei. Because of excessive blood loss during childbirth, Ying blood suddenly exhausts, and Wei Qi loses its master, gathering alone in the Lungs, thus causing panting. This is named "Solitary Yang and Absolute Yin," which is difficult to treat. If lochia does not flow smoothly, and failed blood stagnates and coagulates, steaming upward to the Lungs, it also causes rapid panting. Simply taking *Duoming Dan* (see Formula in Volume 18, Discussion 4) will resolve the panting once the blood is expelled.
Commentary: Postpartum rapid panting is indeed frightening. However, if it is due to failed blood steaming upward to the Lungs, one can still expect efficacy from *Duoming Dan*. If it is caused by wind-cold invasion, or by emotional distress such as worry and anger, or by consuming salty and cold foods, *Duoming Dan* may not be effective for all cases, let alone for Solitary Yang and Absolute Yin. If Ying blood is suddenly cut off, it is appropriate to use a large dose of *Xiong Gui Tang* (Angelicae Sinensis and Ligusticum Decoction), which can also save the patient. For wind-cold invasion, *Xuan Fu Hua Tang* (Inula Flower Decoction) is suitable; for emotional depression manifesting physically, *Xiao Tiao Jing San* (Minor Regulating Menses Powder) is suitable, taken with a decoction of *Sang Bai Pi* and *Xing Ren*; for food injury, *Xian Xian Wan*, *Wu Ji San*, and *Xiong Gui Tang* are suitable. (Formulas see Volume 2, Discussion 5. Also known as *Fo Shou San*)
