Treats coughing, wheezing, chest fullness, excessive phlegm and saliva, and restlessness in sitting or lying down caused by wind-strike, cold invasion, summerheat, or dampness after childbirth.
*Inulae Flos* (Xuanfuhua), *Paeoniae Radix Rubra* (Chishao Yao), *Peucedani Radix* (Qianhu), *Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum* (Banxia Qu), *Schizonepetae Spica* (Jingjie Sui), *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma* (Gancao), *Poria* (Fuling), *Schisandrae Fructus* (Wuweizi), *Armeniacae Semen Amarum* (Xingren), *Ephedrae Herba* (Mahuang) (equal parts).
The above herbs are chopped. Take four qian per dose. Add one and a half cups of water, five slices of ginger, and one jujube. Decoct until three-tenths remain, strain, and take warm before meals. (Do not administer to those with sweating.)
*Xiao Tiaojing San* (see Formula 10 in this volume), *Wu Ji San* (see *Heji Jufang*), *Xianxian Wan* (see Volume 21, Treatise 1).
Treats the condition in women after childbirth where blood enters the lungs, causing blackening of the face, severe wheezing, and a sensation of impending death. (From Hu's Formula)
*Ginseng Radix* (Renshen) (one liang, prepared separately into powder), *Sappan Lignum* (Suanmu) (two liang).
Add two bowls of water to the above and decoct until less than one bowl remains. Strain and mix in the ginseng powder. Adjust dosage as needed. The efficacy is miraculous and beyond description.
Commentary: Why does black qi appear at the mouth and nose, and why does epistaxis occur after childbirth? The answer is: The Yangming meridian is the sea of the meridians. It originates at the nose, intersects at the inner canthus, returns to emerge at the cheek and mouth, intersects at the philtrum, with the left meridian crossing to the right and the right to the left. After childbirth, qi dissipates and blood scatters; Ying and Wei qi lose their orderly regulation, scatter into the various meridians, and fail to return. Thus, black qi appears at the mouth and nose, and epistaxis occurs. This arises from postpartum deficiency-heat transforming into this syndrome. This disease is incurable and is named "Stomach Exhaustion and Lung Failure." Since this syndrome cannot be treated, no formula is provided. The *Experience Formulas* state: For such diseases, urgently take one red thread and two hairs from the vertex of the mother's head, tie them tightly around the middle joint of the middle finger, and the bleeding will stop. There is no medicinal cure; this is also a form of apotropaic ritual. The *Haishang Fang* treats postpartum epistaxis and wind-stroke by administering two qianbi of powdered *Schizonepetae Spica* mixed with urine from an uncircumcised boy.
The Lung governs Qi, and the Zang-Fu organs of the five viscera and six bowels all derive from Qi. After childbirth, Qi and Blood are injured, and the Zang-Fu organs are damaged. Wind-cold combats with Qi, causing Qi to rebel and ascend. Furthermore, due to Spleen deficiency accumulating cold and latent cold in the Stomach, combined with the consumption of hot foods, the cold and hot Qi clash, causing Qi rebellion and obstruction, resulting in coughing and belching. The Spleen governs the Middle Jiao, serves as the gate of the Three Jiao, and acts as the granary of the Five Viscera, storing water and grain essence. If Yin and Yang Qi are deficient, causing Ying and Wei Qi to rebel, this disease arises. The Classics state: Coughing and belching are generated by Stomach cold. If medication is ineffective, moxa should be applied to Qimen (LR14) for three moxa cones, and it will surely heal. Qimen is the major collateral of the Stomach.
