Treats various diseases occurring postpartum.
Fresh Rehmanniae Radix juice, fresh Zingiberis Rhizoma juice (one sheng each), Nelumbinis Nuciferae Rhizomatis Juice (half a sheng), Cannabis Fructus (three liang, shell removed and ground into powder).
Mix the above evenly, place in a silver vessel, and slowly simmer over low heat until it forms a paste. Take half a spoonful mixed with warm wine. It is even better if half a cup of Bistortae Rhizoma paste is added to it. *Chanbao Fang* does not use Cannabis Fructus but uses Honey instead. This formula treats postpartum deficiency and exhaustion, night sweats, and vomiting.
Treats new mothers whose Qi and Blood are both injured, where the Five Zang organs suffer sudden deficiency, limbs are emaciated, breath is short with excessive sweating. It is taken daily from the moment of delivery until one hundred days postpartum. It strengthens Qi, tonifies deficiency, harmonizes and nourishes the Zang organ Qi, eliminates residual pathogens, promotes digestion, and increases appetite.
Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (two liang, another version says three liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (each one liang).
Grind the above into a fine powder, mix with refined honey, and form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take thirty pills with warm rice water on an empty stomach. Immediately after delivery, dissolve a small amount in child's urine for administration. For seven days, take three times daily. *Chanru Fang* states: This is essentially Dali Zhong Wan with double the amount of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma. However, its efficacy is greater than when the four ingredients are used in equal proportions, hence the difference. It likely utilizes the sweet flavor to moderate the middle jiao, possessing the most potent effect in unblocking meridians. This is a medicine indispensable for parturient women within one month; it is not needed after the first month. Ancient formulas contain tonifying herbs for women, such as Dalze Lan Wan, Xiaobaiwei Wan, Shugan Dihuang Wan, Dasheng San, etc. These formulas contain many ingredients and are difficult for ordinary families or those in rural areas to obtain? Moreover, true versions are rare in pharmacies. It is better to substitute them with Sishun Lizhong Wan, which has broader therapeutic indications compared to Zelan Wan and similar formulas.
Treats all blood-related diseases postpartum, dystocia, retained placenta, critical conditions nearing death. As long as the medicine can be administered orally, no case will fail to survive; the miraculous efficacy cannot be described in words.
Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Trogopterori Faeces, Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (each one liang).
Finely chop the above, place in a clay pot, seal the cracks with Red Halloysite, reinforce with paper pulp mud, and secure with salt mud. Roast over ten jin of charcoal fire until thoroughly red-hot. Remove from heat and let cool. Open to check if the interior is black and crumbly. Grind finely, then add the following herbs.
Soot (five liang), Sulphur, Frankincense (each one qian and half), Huari Shi (Flower Corundum), Succinum (each one qian weight).
Grind these five herbs finely together, then re-grind with the previous five herbs. Prepare according to standard methods and mix evenly. Use rice vinegar and wheat flour paste to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose. Roast the pill in charcoal until red-hot, then quench it in fresh Ginger juice mixed with child's urine and wine. Retrieve, drain, and grind finely. Administer only by mixing with this prepared wine.
Mao Xun, during the early Xining era while serving in the Puzhou government office, was told by Hu, a local obstetrician, that before his time, Zhu Bian, a Water Department official, distributed Heilong Dan (Black Dragon Pill). All critical postpartum cases nearing death were cured. Many people in the commandery and villages relied on it to survive. When Zhu Bian retired and returned home, thousands of women wept and blocked the road to see him off, with one or two pills remaining unsold. My father was demoted to Huaiyang. His sister-in-law, Ma Shi, fell critically ill during confinement. The physician Kang Congbian administered the pill, and she recovered immediately. We later learned he obtained it from Zhu Bian. He said each pill sold for one thousand coins, implying high profit, so he was reluctant to share it. Later, Kang Congbian was reinstated as Governor of Ruhai. At a farewell banquet at a relay station, he presented this formula to me before leaving. I used it to save lives, and it was always effective. Lu Daoyuan, Vice Minister, commanded Jingyuan again. At that time, my aunt was pregnant and went to Lintong for confinement. Days later, burglars broke into her room at night. She became terrified and ill. Conventional physicians could not treat her. Her brother used the medicine left by my younger brother, and she stabilized. Another family member, Jin Hua Jun Qin Sheng Wendu, suffered from severe headache for several days, followed by heart pain. The pain radiated to both thighs, moving up and down, accompanied by intense heat and aversion. He was confused, irritable, and restless. Lights appeared golden to him. He could not swallow even a spoonful of liquid. Many medicines failed. My younger brother said: Heilong Dan can be taken. Initially, half a pill allowed him to drink porridge, while other medicines caused vomiting. Feeling some relief, another half pill was given, allowing peaceful sleep. From midnight until dawn, he passed several sheng of foul matter, and the headache instantly decreased. By mealtime, he passed several more sheng, woke up completely, and recovered. This was due to stagnant blood; the efficacy was thus. Recorded on May 20, Jianzhong Jingguo Year 1, by Guo Maoxun.
The wife of my second brother, Jin Hua Jun, did not eat for seven days after giving birth in Qin. She complained of headache. The headache triggered heart pain, followed by eye pain like cutting. This cycle repeated rapidly. During severe headaches, she wished to press a large stone on her head. Eating gradually calmed her. During heart pain, she scratched the walls with her fingers until they bled. When pain subsided, her eyes hurt again, and she tried to gouge them out with her hands. This continued for ten days. Two national physicians and several skilled local doctors consulted but had no solution. They claimed herbs containing Chuanxiong could cure headache, and Curcuma longa could treat heart pain. These were baseless statements, and the root cause remained unknown. Zhang Yi was exhausted, and medical skills were depleted. I judged the condition critical and believed only a divine pill could cure it. While preparing the medicine, Zhang summoned me. The couple entrusted their children to me. Parting from my second brother's wife was heartbreaking, and we rarely spoke. I warned Zhang sternly: Brother, rest and recover. I urgently called Bo Shi: The situation is critical. Can we administer this pill? My second brother hesitated, fearing she could not tolerate it after twenty days without food. At dusk, half a pill was given, and symptoms slightly eased. At midnight, another dose was administered, and she slept peacefully as usual. At dawn, she passed about three sheng of stool resembling locust eggs. Three major symptoms reduced by half. By Si hour, she passed stool again and recovered instantly. We sent female attendants to check on her; she was nearly lifeless. Afternoon came, her body cooled, and breath stabilized. She whispered asking for water, and subsequently recovered fully. Generally, postpartum care prioritizes eliminating foul blood. Stagnant blood leads to such conditions. New couples lack understanding of this principle. Old women and mediocre physicians miss the pathology. Thus, ten out of eight suffer severely. Although fate may be fixed, premature death occurs. Without good physicians, regret remains. Now I distribute this to help people live out their natural lifespan. I do not seek reward. I hope to relieve suffering and preserve life.
