Treats Baihu Lijie (White Tiger Arthralgia), various pains caused by wind pathogens, wandering and unsteady, feeling as if bitten by insects, quiet during the day and severe at night, as well as all sudden unexplained pains in the hands and feet.
Daba Jiao Chuan Wutou (Three large star-shaped Sichuan Aconite roots, peeled and tips removed, raw) Quanxie (Twenty-one whole Scorpions, raw) Sheng Heidou (Twenty-one black soybeans, raw) Dilong (Earthworm, skin removed, cleaned, half tael).
The above ingredients are ground into a fine powder. Add Moxiang (Musk) in an amount of "one character" (approx. 0.5g or a pinch), grind together uniformly, and form pills using glutinous rice paste, sized like mung beans. Take seven pills per dose; for severe cases, take ten pills. Ensure the stomach is empty before sleep, swallow with warm wine. A slight general cold sweat will occur, after which the illness will subside. (Scholar Xu stated: I obtained this prescription. For any Lijie or unexplained pain, one or two doses result in recovery. While in Shechuan, a noblewoman suffered from widespread wandering pain that flared up at night, feeling as if insects were biting her muscles. Many treated it as a ghostly affliction. I said: This is precisely Lijie disease. After three doses, she was cured.)
Treats various limb and joint pains, emaciated body, swollen feet as if detached, dizziness, shortness of breath, and a sensation of nausea wanting to vomit. (From *San Yin Fang*)
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome) Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root) Shaoyao (Peony Root) Gancao (Licorice Root) Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, roots and joints removed, each 4 liang, processed) Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root, 3 liang, processed).
The above ingredients are chopped. Take 4 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and 5 slices of fresh ginger, decoct until reduced to 0.7 zhan, strain, and take on an empty stomach. Another method includes Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Xingren (Apricot Seed), and Banxia (Pinellia Tuber).
Treats wind-induced Lijie, where limb pains feel like hammering on iron, unbearable.
Fuzi (Aconite Lateral Root) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) Shaoyao (Peony Root) Fuling (Poria) Renshen (Ginseng Root) Gancao (Licorice Root) Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart) (each 3 liang) Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 4 liang).
The above ingredients are chopped. Take 4 da qian per dose. Add 2 zhan of water, decoct until reduced to 0.7 zhan, strain, and take before meals. Another version removes Guixin and uses Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), 2 liang.
Most effective for Lijie Feng (Wind Lijie); modern people use it with great efficacy. (See Chapter 7 of this volume.)
Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction) Primarily treats Baihu Lijie, where pain is unbearable. (Prescription found in Volume 3)
There was a woman who initially suffered unbearable pain in both ankle bones. The next day, the pain flowed upward to the knees. Within one or two days, it flowed to the thigh bones. In severe cases, it flowed to the shoulders, then from shoulders to elbows, and from elbows to Houxi (SI3, Posterior Stream acupoint). The pain felt either like hammering or like insect bites, unbearable. Daytime quietness with nighttime exacerbation occurred. Various medicines failed. Upon my diagnosis, the six pulses were tight. I said: This is true Lijie syndrome. Only dispersing and releasing exterior herbs can cure it. Using only Xiao Xuming Tang, one dose resulted in a cure.
Another case: Lady Deng also suffered from Lijie in summer, with unbearable pain, unresponsive to various medicines. Upon my diagnosis, the Renying (ST9, Neck Artery pulse point) and Xinmai (Heart pulse) were deficient. This was caused by Summerheat. It was appropriate to first administer Jiuzheng Huanglian Wan (Wine-steamed Coptis Pill). Other doctors laughed at this approach. However, after taking one packet, she was cured. Subsequent use on others proved highly effective.
