When the mother's qi and blood are vigorous but the fetus is weak, it is termed a prenatal disease; when the mother is weak but the fetus is robust, the mother will suffer after childbirth. If both mother and fetus are in harmony, with neither excess nor deficiency, delivery can proceed calmly without anxiety.
[Note] This discusses the differentiation of excess and deficiency between the pregnant woman and the fetus. If the pregnant mother has strong qi and blood but the fetal root (the foundation of fetal vitality) is weak, there will likely be many illnesses during pregnancy. If the pregnant woman is frail but the fetal root is robust, the mother will likely fall ill after childbirth. If both mother and fetus are balanced, without bias toward excess or deficiency, both prenatal and postnatal periods will be safe and free from illness, allowing for peace of mind.
During pregnancy, conditions often present as excess (exuberance), yet one must carefully examine for signs of deficiency (insufficiency). After childbirth, conditions often present as deficiency, yet one must carefully scrutinize for accompanying signs of excess. To understand why postpartum periods frequently involve depletion, one should investigate the dynamics of maternal-fetal excess and deficiency during pregnancy to anticipate potential issues.
