Madam of Mr. Zhang Wuqiao, Vice Director of the Prefecture, suffered from asthma and coughing. In the middle of the night, her qi was obstructed severely, preventing her from lying supine. Her constitution was inherently weak; her pulse was slippery and large on the right side, and fine and weak on the left. Each bout of coughing consisted of dozens of consecutive coughs, with phlegm difficult to expectorate, sometimes even inducing vomiting. She was treated with a modified version of Renshen Pingfei San (Ginseng Lung-Pacifying Decoction) by Li Dongyuan, recovering in four days. The prescription included: Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Sang Bai Pi (Cortex Mori), Di Gu Pi (Cortex Lycii), Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Fu Ling (Poria), Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae), Zhi Mu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae), Hua Shi (Talcum), Mai Ya (Fructus Hordei Germinatus), Tian Ma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Jing Mi (Oryza Sativa Germen), and Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), decocted in water and taken orally; at night, Bai Wan Zi (White Pill) was administered.
Fang Dongye suffered from pain in the spinal column, radiating to the chest and abdomen. His tongue coating was thick and yellow, and his pulse was deep, slippery, and rapid. Initially, he was prescribed Chuan Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong), Qiang Huo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Radix Glycyrrhizae), Cang Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Chinensis), Jiang Huang (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Ben Cao (Rhizoma Ligustici Wallichii), Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii), Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis), and Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri). After taking this, the back pain subsided, but abdominal pain persisted. He was then given Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Bing Lang (Semen Arecae), Jiang Huang (Rhizoma Curcumae Longae), Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Jiu Lian (Radix Coptidis prepared with wine), Da Gua Lou (Fructus Trichosanthis), Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri), and Chuan Xiong (Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong). The abdominal pain decreased slightly, but lower back pain became severe. It was determined that phlegm accumulation had moved downward but could not be expelled. Immediately, Mu Xin Bing Lang Wan (Mu Xiang and Bing Lang Pill) was used to purge him. After three or four bowel movements, the thick yellow tongue coating began to recede, and abdominal pain ceased completely. The pulse became weak and soft. Treatment was changed to Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Fu Ling (Poria), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), Bai Jie Zi (Semen Mustardae), Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), Chai Hu (Radix Bupleuri), Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), and Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) for regulation, leading to stability.
Zhang Jingyu, a scholar, presented with fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, thirst, and incessant vomiting. Contemporary physicians differed in diagnosis: some attributed it to cold, others to heat, and others to food stagnation. Upon examination, I diagnosed it as Shi Yi Xie (Seasonal Epidemic Diarrhea). He was prescribed Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) with doubled Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), plus Qing Hao (Herba Artemisiae Annuae), Ge Gen (Radix Puerariae), Jiu Qin (Radix Scutellariae prepared with wine), Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), and Hua Shi (Talcum). One dose brought relief.
Old Gentleman Zhang Yiyin Jin chuan initially suffered from internal injury and external contraction. Due to excessive use of diaphoretic and digestive-promoting agents, he developed pain in the epigastrium, centered over the heart region. All six pulses were wiry and weak. The appropriate method was tonification and astringency. Bai Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) prepared with wine, 5 qian; Zhi Gan Cao (Prepared Radix Glycyrrhizae), 3 qian; Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), 1.5 qian; Xiang Fu (Rhizoma Cyperi), 1 qian; Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae), 3 pieces; Yi Tang (Maltose), 1 he. Decocted and taken in one dose, resulting in recovery.
