Li Dongyuan (Li Mingzhi) stated: All rashes arise from the retrograde flow of cold water. When a child is first born, while in the mother's womb, he breathes when the mother breathes out and breathes in when the mother inhales. Respiration belongs to Yang, and movement arises from it. When hungry, he consumes the mother's blood; when thirsty, he drinks the mother's blood. Diet and drink belong to Yin, and physical form and substance are generated from them. With Yin complete and Yang sufficient, after ten months, the child descends. The foul blood in the mouth is expelled immediately upon crying, returning to the place where men generate essence and where women conceive the fetus, which is what the *Mingzong* refers to as the "Xuanpin" (Mysterious Female) and "Xuanguan" (Mysterious Portal). This blood lies latent and does not disperse timely. It may be triggered by internal injury from milk and food, or by damp-heat flowing downward. When Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) fails to circulate smoothly and reverses within the muscle tissue, the latent blood is stimulated to erupt. Initially, Bladder Ren Water flows retrogradely along the spine, overcoming Small Intestine Bing Fire, so symptoms appear first above the neck. Subsequently, Kidney Gui Water overcomes Heart Fire, so symptoms appear next above the chest and abdomen. Finally, the two Fires become blazing hot and counter-restrict Cold Water, so symptoms appear last below the chest and abdomen. At this stage, all Zang and Fu organs are affected. The disease progresses through seven days of completion (eruption full), seven days of peak intensity, and seven days of resolution, healing in twenty-one days (3 x 7), because seven is the number associated with Fire. After recovery, if carbuncles or sores occur, these are due to residual toxins still present. Now, this disease affecting the eyes is similar; it is slightly alike yet distinct from diseases caused by uncontrolled Wind-Heat. Generally, it is treated primarily with Lingyang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction). If the stool is not hard, reduce the dosage of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma). If the disease occurs before twenty-one days have passed, Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxifying and Transforming Macules Decoction) is used. The efficacy of this medicine is not limited to treating the eyes; it is specifically a remedy for variola/rash diseases. Whether in the early stages or fully developed, taking it will cause the toxin to dissipate; if the rash is sparse, it will not reappear. The formula is modified according to the four seasons.
Lingyang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Decoction) (Treats post-variolal residual toxins that fail to resolve, attacking upward to the eyes, causing nebulae, photophobia, excessive discharge and tearing, redness, swelling, and closure.)
Jueming (Cassiae Semen), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) (The horn is finely sliced; all ingredients are in equal parts).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until half a zhong remains, remove the dregs, and take warm.
In the above formula, Lingyangjiao (Saigae Tataricae Cornu) serves as the Jun (Monarch) herb, primarily for brightening the eyes; Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) tonifies the Taiyin channel to solidify the interior and expel toxins; Huangqi (Astragali Radix) tonifies the Hand-Taiyin channel to solidify the exterior and resist pathogens, serving as the Chen (Minister) herbs; Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) raises clear Yang, and Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen) drains turbid Yin, serving as the Zuo (Assistant) herbs; Jueming (Cassiae Semen) treats redness, pain, and tearing; Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) are used to attack consolidated heat, serving as the Shi (Envoy) herbs. However, Dahuang and Mangxiao are greatly bitter and cold medicines. Wise practitioners should assess the patient's deficiency or excess to adjust the dosages. For diseases occurring before twenty-one days, Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxifying and Transforming Macules Decoction) is used.
Xiaodu Huaban Tang (Detoxifying and Transforming Macules Decoction) (Treats eye diseases arising in children with variola/rash before twenty-one days have passed. Other symptoms are the same as above.)
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Gaoben (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (prepared with wine), Chuanlianzhong (Coptidis Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 4 fen), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Sumu (Pterocarpus Santalinus Lignum), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) (each 2 fen), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Chuanqianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 5 fen), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (prepared with wine), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (processed with rice water), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 3 fen).
Cut into pieces. Add two zhongs of water, decoct until one zhong remains, remove the dregs, and take warm.
The efficacy of the above formula is not limited to treating the eyes; it is specifically established for treating variola/rash. The reason for using a variola/rash formula to treat eye disease now is that the toxin is still blazing hot and has spread to affect the eyes. The eruption of variola/rash begins in the Bladder, where Ren Water overcomes Small Intestine Bing Fire. Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Gaoben (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) are herbs for the Foot-Taiyang channel, thus serving as the Jun (Monarch); subsequently, Kidney Gui Water overcomes Heart Fire. Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) enters the Shaoyin channel, thus serving as the Chen (Minister); finally, the two Fires blaze, counter-restricting Cold Water. Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) raise and diffuse Yang Qi and dispel various wind pathogens. Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) resolve and benefit against toxic pathogens. Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) disperses various stagnations. Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) eliminate dampness and harmonize the Stomach. Raw Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) greatly reduces various heats, serving as the Zuo (Assistant). When Qi cannot move up and down, Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) and Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) unblock it. When Blood cannot circulate, Honghua (Carthami Flos) and Sumu (Pterocarpus Santalinus Lignum) smooth it. Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) heals malignant sores, and Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) removes pathogenic heat, serving as the Shi (Envoy). The Jun, Chen, Zuo, and Shi roles, along with contrary and direct approaches, are fully prepared in this formula. Those who understand the transformations of nature and the properties of medicines can comprehend it. Before the appearance of variola/rash, if a child has cold ear tips, yawning, startle during sleep, sneezing, and dry/itchy eyes, one knows that variola/rash will inevitably emerge. Immediately administer this medicine. Severe cases will become sparse; sparse cases will heal immediately. Thereafter, there is no risk of recurrence.
