Sanbai San (Three Whites Powder) is effective for treating all types of diarrhea.
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, remove rhizome, stir-fry, 1.5 qian) Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fry, 1.5 qian) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove skin, 1 qian) Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 1 qian) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fry with ginger juice) Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fry, 1 qian each) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fry, 0.5 qian) Wu Mei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh, decoction use 3 qian, pill use 2 qian).
If accompanied by food stagnation, add Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, stir-fry) and Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fry), 1 qian each.
The above herbs are cut into pieces. Add three slices of fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang), decoct in water, and take before meals. Alternatively, grind into powder and form pills with Shen Qu paste; this is even more effective.
A large pulse indicates survival. A weak and slow pulse indicates death. A choppy pulse indicates Huoluan (Cholera-like disease). Shortness of breath and inability to speak, curled tongue, and retracted scrotum are all untreatable.
Huoluan refers to sudden and chaotic changes in the body. Its symptoms include sudden pain in the heart and abdomen, vomiting and diarrhea, fever and aversion to cold, headache, and dizziness. It may present as diarrhea without vomiting, or vomiting without diarrhea. Heart pain precedes vomiting; abdominal pain precedes diarrhea. If both heart and abdomen hurt, vomiting and diarrhea occur simultaneously. In severe cases, it leads to muscle cramps (Zhuanjin), extreme prostration, and cold limbs; life and death depend on a moment. Treatment should prioritize Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi) with added fresh Ginger. This not only warms and disperses wind-cold but also regulates vomiting and diarrhea. Vomiting with diarrhea is called Shi Huoluan (Damp Cholera), with fewer deaths. Vomiting and diarrhea that cannot be expelled is called Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera), with more deaths. Urgent treatment requires administering salt water to induce profuse vomiting, offering a chance of survival. Do not give grain food; even a sip of rice drink can cause death upon entry. Wait until vomiting and diarrhea cease for two to three hours, until the patient is very hungry, then offer thin porridge and regulate slowly. For persistent muscle cramps, men should hold their genitals, and women should pull their breasts near the axilla; this is a wonderful method from Qianjin Fang.
One discussion concerns abnormal qi of the four seasons, such as cold epidemic qi, mountain miasma, rain-damp vapor, or cold invasion causing abdominal pain and diarrhea, summerheat-wind invasion causing vomiting and diarrhea, dampness invasion causing heavy body and diarrhea, or failure to adapt to local conditions, spleen-stomach disharmony, food stagnation, combined with external cold, leading to headache, aversion to cold, nausea, chest oppression, or fever without sweating. All these are treated with:
Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Rectify the Qi)
Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba, 2 qian) Zi Su (Perillae Folium) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fry with ginger juice) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, stir-fry with ginger juice) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fry, remove rhizome) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove skin) Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium) Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 1 qian each) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 qian).
Cut one dose. Decoct with fresh Ginger and dates. For Huoluan with muscle cramps, add Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), 2 qian. For abdominal pain, add Chao Bai Shao (Stir-fried Paeoniae Radix Alba), 2 qian. For cold pain, add Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), 0.8 fen. For severe cold, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), 0.8 fen. For undigested food and epigastric fullness, add Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus), 1 qian. For undigested grains, add Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), 2 qian. For summerheat-wind invasion, add Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba), 1 qian, and Bian Dou (Vigna Semen), 2 qian. For intermittent chills and high fever, add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), 1 qian, and Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix), 2 qian. For fever, add Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix), 2 qian, and Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba), 3 qian. For thirst with diarrhea and difficult urination, combine with Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria). For damp-heat conflict, Huoluan with muscle cramps, irritability, thirst, and confusion, combine with Huanglian Xiangru San (Coptis and Mosla Powder). For severe heart-abdominal colic, add Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), 1 qian. For frequent urge to defecate but difficulty passing stool, add Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), 1 qian.
One discussion states that Huoluan disease is always caused by internal injury from raw/cold foods and external contraction of wind-cold. I use Huoxiang Zhengqi San to treat it, with 100% success. Within a year, treating hundreds of people, none failed. If there is heat, add Huang Lian stir-fried with ginger, 0.6 fen. If cold is severe, add Gan Jiang, 0.8 fen, ensuring no mistakes. For abdominal pain, add Gui (Cinnamon Twig), 0.5 fen; for severe pain, remove Huo Xiang and add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus), 0.4 fen. For difficult urination, add Fu Ling (Poria), 3 qian. For Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera), add Zhi Ke, 1 qian, Bai Fu Ling, 3 qian, and Guan Gui, 0.5 fen, which is best.
One treats weak individuals with upper vomiting and lower diarrhea, Huoluan, cold limbs, abdominal pain, and a faint pulse, indicating Yin syndrome.
Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 qian) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1.5 qian)
Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, stir-fry, 0.8 fen)
Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-roasted, 0.8 fen).
If affected by cold and dampness, add Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), 1 qian, named Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Regulate the Middle Decoction). For Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea, add Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), 2 qian, and Chen Pi, 1 qian, named Zhizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction). For Gan Huoluan with heart-abdominal pain, first administer salt water frequently until vomited, then give this medicine. If vomiting occurs, add Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), 0.5 fen, Ban Xia, 2 qian, and Sheng Jiang, 2 slices, to Zhizhong Tang. If diarrhea occurs, add Ju Pi (Tangerine Peel) and Fu Ling, named Buzhong Tang (Tonify the Middle Decoction). If loose diarrhea persists, add Fu Zi, 1 qian, to Buzhong Tang. If appetite is poor and grains are undigested, add Sha Ren, 0.8 fen, Fu Zi, 0.8 fen, Chen Pi, 2 qian, and Fu Ling, 3 qian. For Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea, heart-abdominal pain, and cold limbs, remove Bai Zhu and add Fu Zi, 0.8 fen, named Sishun Tang (Four Smoothness Decoction). For Taiyang disease with Jie Xiong (Chest Binding), first use Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction); if ineffective, and after various vomiting/diarrhea, with chest oppression nearing collapse, elevated epigastrium, tight painful sensation intolerant to touch, add Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), 2 qian, and Fu Ling, 3 qian, named Zhishi Lizhong Tang (Immature Bitter Orange Regulate the Middle Decoction). If thirsty, add Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), 3 qian, to Zhishi Lizhong Tang. If desiring to drink water, add Bai Zhu, 1.5 qian. For Huoluan muscle cramps, add Huo Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), 3 qian, to Lizhong Tang. If pulsation above the navel indicates Kidney Qi movement, remove Bai Zhu and add Gui, 0.5 fen. The Kidney dislikes dryness, hence remove Bai Zhu. To prevent Ben Tun (Running Piglet), add Guan Gui. If palpitations are frequent, add Fu Ling, 3 qian. If abdominal fullness, remove Bai Zhu and add Fu Zi, 0.8 fen. If excessive alcohol intake or consumption of roasted/hot foods causes nosebleeds, add Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), 1.5 qian. If stomach injury causes hematemesis, this medicine regulates the Middle Jiao, separates Yin and Yang, and stabilizes blood vessels.
One discussion covers Zhuanjin Huoluan (Cramping Cholera) with upper vomiting, lower diarrhea, abdominal pain, and Gan Huoluan, commonly known as Jiaochang Sha (Intestinal Colic Plague), a true Yin syndrome with cold limbs. It is suitable to take Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill).
Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 qian) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, processed, 0.8 fen) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-roasted, 0.8 fen).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey, each weighing 1 qian. Chew thoroughly and swallow with light ginger soup. Avoid rice soup. This is Lizhong Tang converted to pills, utilizing the principle that Earth controls Water. If decocted as soup, it is ineffective.
One discussion on Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera), commonly known as Jiaochang Sha. Symptoms arise from undigested food causing severe heart-abdominal colic, desire to vomit but unable, desire to defecate but unable, sudden chaos, and trapped pathogenic factors. Death occurs quickly. Urgently administer abundant salt water to induce vomiting, expelling the pathogen completely, then administer Lizhong Tang or Lizhong Wan. Additionally, prick the ten fingertips and Weizhong (BL40) acupoint to bleed.
One case of Huoluan with body heat and thirst indicates Summerheat invasion.
Jiajian Ruiling Tang (Modified Ruiling Decoction)
Zhu Ling (Polypori Umbilicatus, 2 qian) Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma, 2 qian) Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba, 1 qian) Gan Ge (Puerariae Radix, 2 qian) Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria, 3 qian).
Cut one dose. Decoct with fresh Ginger. If heat is extreme, add Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), 2 qian, and Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), 2 qian. If diarrhea is extreme, add Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), 0.5 fen, and Hua Shi (Talcum), 3 qian. For abdominal pain, add Chao Shao Yao (Stir-fried Paeoniae Radix), 2 qian, and Gui (Cinnamon Twig), 0.3 fen. Cold pain is treated similarly.
For Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea, finely cut fresh Ginger, mix with newly drawn water and Yiyuan San (Beneficial Origin Powder), warm and take to stop immediately.
One discussion on Huoluan vomiting and diarrhea caused by drinking cold liquids, exposure to cold, hunger, anger, or travel by carriage/boat, damaging Stomach Qi, leading to continuous vomiting and diarrhea, dizziness, blurred vision, muscle cramps in hands and feet, cold limbs. Delayed medication leads to death within moments.
Baifei Tang (Boiling Water Decoction)
Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, 5 qian) Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus, 5 qian) Shi Yan (Halitum, 5 qian).
Stir-fry the three ingredients until scorched. Decoct with boiling water. Take hot or cold according to patient preference.

Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with rice soup.
One discussion on post-Huoluan recovery with irritability, heat, thirst, and difficult urination, suitable for Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction).
Maidong Tang (Ophiopogon Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix, 2 qian) Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1.5 qian) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove skin, 3 qian) Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 qian) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, ginger-fried, 2 qian) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, remove heart, 3 qian) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.8 fen) Xiao Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus, 0.8 fen) Wu Mei (Mume Fructus, 2 qian).

One discussion on Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera) with inability to vomit or defecate, cold sweat, nearing collapse. Take a handful of salt, stir-fry until yellow, add one bowl of child's urine, and take warm. Soon, vomiting and defecation will resolve.
One treats Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea with heart-abdominal pain. Stir-fry two bowls of salt, wrap in paper and gauze, place on the chest and upper abdomen. Iron with a heated iron tool until warmth penetrates, then revive. Subsequently, iron the back with salt for complete recovery.
One treats Huoluan muscle cramps. Blow a small amount of Zao Jiao Mo (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) powder into the nostril like a soybean; inducing vomiting cures it.
One Huoluan muscle cramp: Boil a handful of Da Liao (Polygoni Orientalis Herba) in water to wash. Northerners substitute with wheat sugar. This opens pores and dissipates Yang Qi, curing the condition. He Jian stated: Heat drying and burning the tendons causes spasms and pain.
One case of cramps entering the abdomen, nearing death: Mash one liang of fresh Ginger, decoct in five cups of wine, and take.
One Huoluan with upper vomiting and lower diarrhea (Transmitted by Deng Duifeng): Crush leeks to extract one cup of juice, cook thoroughly in double boiler, take hot to stop immediately.
One Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea with abdominal pain where medicine induces vomiting. Mix half a bowl of Baifei Tang (Boiling Water) with half a bowl of well spring water, take together to find relief. Named Yinyang Tang (Yin-Yang Decoction), extremely effective.
One treats Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea: Decoct a handful of Zhang Shu Pi (Cortex Camphorae) in water, take warm to stop immediately.
One Huoluan regardless of cold or heat, with inability to vomit or defecate, abdominal pain, and irritability, is called Gan Huoluan (Dry Cholera), fatal within days. Quickly dip warm water on the yellow veins of the patient's ankles and pat. When purple-red pulses appear, prick with cloth needle or broken porcelain tile to release purple blood, which cures it.
One treats Huoluan vomiting/diarrhea: Decoct Huo Xiang Geng (Pogostemonis Caulis) alone in water for immediate effect. Another prescription adds Chen Pi, which is excellent.
