The "Original Transformation Chapter" (Yuanhua Pian) of the *Shengji Jing* states in the "Chapter on Distinct Endowments of Formed Nature" (Ningxing Shubing Zhang): Heaven and Earth are the greatest of forms; Yin and Yang are the greatest of Qi. Only when form and Qi support each other can they be established, never being neglected or abandoned. When male and female essence combine, all things are transformed, and the forms and Qi of Heaven and Yin and Yang are contained within. Speaking of the numbers seven and eight: seven is Shaoyang (Lesser Yang), and eight is Shaoyin (Lesser Yin); they interact and circulate. Therefore, when girls reach fourteen years old, Tian Gui (menstrual fluid/reproductive essence) arrives; when boys reach sixteen years old, Tian Gui arrives. Thus, through the intersection of Yin and Yang, the beginning of life is signaled. Speaking of the numbers nine and ten: nine is Laoyang (Old Yang), and ten is Laoyin (Old Yin); they envelop each other to bestow form. Therefore, Yin reaches its limit at ten, which men can encircle; Yang reaches its limit at nine, which women can square. This is because of the generation and completion of Yin and Yang. The gestation of Yuan Qi (Primordial Qi) all begins at Zi (the first earthly branch, corresponding to midnight or the north). Counting from Zi, males rotate leftward, accumulating thirty years to reach Si; females rotate rightward, accumulating twenty years to reach Si. Si represents Zhengyang (True Yang), and Yin actually follows it. From the month of Si during pregnancy, males rotate leftward for ten months, and the child is born in the month of Yin; females rotate rightward for ten months, and the child is born in the month of Shen. Shen represents Sanyin (Three Yin), and Yin represents Sanyang (Three Yang), thus revealing the timing of birth and reproduction. Regarding endowments, the body has rigidity and flexibility, the pulse has strength and weakness, Qi has abundance and scarcity, and Blood has prosperity and decline; these are fixed and unchangeable. As for different regions, there are appropriate variations in the number of offspring. Auspicious events have omens, and dreams correspond to their respective categories. Therefore, in Jingzhou and Yangzhou, where the soil is thin, many daughters are born; in Yongzhou and Yizhou, where the soil is thick, many sons are born. Bears and black bears are omens for males, vipers and snakes are omens for females; these are principles that can be deduced. In the methods of fetal transformation, there is what is called "turning a female into a male," which is also natural according to principle. For example, eating rooster meat takes the complete Yang essence from heavenly productions. Wearing Realgar takes the complete Yang essence from earthly productions. Handling bows and arrows, resting near axes and hatchets, takes the rigid objects manifested in human affairs. Qi of similar types secretly communicates, and Creation secretly shifts. This must happen before the fetus takes shape at three months, because at that time, the structure is not yet formed, Yang can overcome Yin, turning a female into a male; this is indeed the principle.
Yang Daye's *Secrets of the Boy* states: During the ten months of fetal nourishment for infants, one must avoid taboos to prevent detrimental influences. In the first month of pregnancy, the fetus originates from the Liver, which governs the Hun (Ethereal Soul) and Po (Corporeal Soul). Therefore, in this month, it is advisable to eat more sour foods to assist the eyes, naturally strengthening the organ. Spicy flavors should be avoided because the Lung accepts pungency, governing Metal overcoming Wood, which might damage the Liver. The second month is the same. Why? Because the Shaoyang channel nourishes the Gallbladder, and the Liver and Gallbladder are interiorly-exteriorly related. In the third month, the Lung governs the nourishment of the Heart's vessels and governs the Shen (Spirit). In this month, it is advisable to add pungent and sour foods, and consume slightly burnt/bitter foods. Because the Lung governs Metal, and its organ accepts pungency to aid Metal Qi. Consuming bitter foods is because the Heart accepts bitterness, governing Fire, and Fire overcomes Metal. In the fourth month, the Heart governs the nourishment of the Kidney. In this month, it is advisable to increase burnt flavors to aid Fire. Because the Heart governs Fire, and its organ accepts burnt and bitter flavors; do not eat sour, because the Kidney accepts salty flavors and governs Water. In the fifth month, the Kidney governs the nourishment of the Spleen. In this month, it is advisable to increase salty flavors and eat less sweet foods. Because the Spleen governs Earth, and Earth controls Water. In the sixth month, the Spleen governs the nourishment of Qi. In this month, increase sweet foods to aid Earth. Because Earth governs the Spleen. In the seventh month, tendons and bones nourish the form and enable movement; eat less salty food. As long as the five flavors mutually nourish, and sweet and bland flavors are balanced, because in this month the fetus is connected, and the nine orifices above and below correspond. In the eighth month, form and spirit are fully developed. Flavors should all be reduced. Do not eat hot-toxic foods or meats of chickens, rabbits, dogs, pigs, cows, horses, birds, sparrows, etc., as these are damaging to the fetus and may cause red tumors; strictly avoid them. Simply listen to scriptures, approach goodness, dwell in quiet rooms, and the children born will live long and be noble. Strictly avoid anger, move frequently, but do not sit, lie down, walk, or stand with excessive effort for too long. Must be cautious. In the ninth month, carefully avoid roasted, fried, fishy, smelly, scaled, or蛊 (poisonous/enticing) foods, as well as clogging, toxic, fatty, slippery, and sticky foods. Avoid these until the beginning of the month, lest you damage the child's head, leading to many bad sores and toxins after birth. In the tenth month, the infant is born, blood and vessels circulate up and down, transforming into breast milk. Following the path of universal trust, if care is adjusted according to the months, naturally there will be no detrimental influences between male and female, tendons and bones will be complete, intelligence and longevity will be achieved, the person will be easy to raise, and there will be no premature death.
Mr. Wang from Handong, in his *Family Treasure*, regarding the theory of infants receiving the Six Qi, says: Generally, infants receive the Six Qi. The Six Qi refer to Tendons, Bones, Blood, Flesh, Essence, and Qi. If Tendons are solid, strength is abundant. If Bones are solid, walking and standing begin early. If Blood is solid, the body is thin and hair is abundant. If Flesh is solid, diseases are few; if the mother's milk is abundant, it appears coarse and purplish. If Essence is solid, the child is agile and intelligent, talks and laughs often, and fears neither cold nor heat. If Qi is solid, illnesses are rare, and the body is fat.
