The "Yuanhua Pian" (Chapter on Original Transformation) of the *Shengji Jing* (Classic of Holy Relief), in the section "Qizhi Shengcheng" (Generation of Constitution and Spirit), states: Humans possess the nature of Heaven and Earth, gather the spirituality of all things, maintain a balance of Water and Fire, and have complete Qi and Form; these are all naturally formed. However, odd and even numbers differ, with some having excess and others deficiency; rigid and flexible natures have different uses, with some being strong and others frail. Ying Blood (nutritive blood) and Wei Qi (defensive qi) cannot escape the laws of waxing and waning. This principle of fullness and emptiness is determined from the initial endowment of parents, so how can it be generalized? Conditions such as accessory growths (supernumerary flesh), hanging warts, syndactyly (extra toe/finger), polydactyly (extra finger/toe), dwarfism, and lameness are conditions where form and Qi are endowed in this manner; conditions such as sores, abscesses, deafness and blindness, aphasia, emaciation, and consumptive diseases are illnesses of Qi and Form occurring in this way. Therefore, at the beginning of embryonic creation, after the shift of essence and transformation of Qi, there was indeed a method for protection and assistance. Heaven has Five Qi, each tending towards specific areas; Earth has Five Flavors, each entering specific pathways. The areas tended to must have moderation, and the intake must have measure. One must know to be cautious and vigilant regarding all taboos. Nourishing oneself through external substances follows this logical principle. Rising and sleeping according to time, and going out and coming in with restraint, allows one to be bright and thorough, preventing fog, dew, wind, and evil pathogens from taking advantage of gaps. Nourishing oneself according to the season also follows this logical principle. Furthermore, regulating anger and joy, reducing desires, and not forgetting rest during labor ensures that Qi and Blood follow smoothly. All these serve to protect pregnancy, preventing various evils from interfering. If not done so, once carelessness occurs during conception, internally there will be insufficient defense for the Middle Jiao, and externally there will be insufficient strength for the body. When Qi and Form are not filled, diseases arise accordingly. For example, eating rabbit meat may cause cleft lip, eating dog meat may cause muteness, and eating miscellaneous fish may cause sores and scabies; these are faults due to lack of dietary caution. Sudden fright of Heart Qi leads to epilepsy, insufficiency of Kidney Qi leads to delayed closure of fontanelles (Jie Lu), disharmony of Spleen and Stomach leads to emaciation, and deficiency of Heart Qi leads to mental insufficiency; these are faults due to irregular Qi and Blood. Truly, if one knows precautions in diet and extends them, the Five Flavors will not cause harm; truly, if one knows regulation of Qi and Blood and extends them, pathogenic factors will find no opportunity to attack. This is how reproduction relies on mutual preparation to succeed. Thus it is said: "Heaven does not act without human effort."

The *Xianren Shuijian* (Immortal's Water Mirror) records twelve signs of children in the maternal womb:
First, excessive sleep in the mother indicates fetal fatigue and decline of Yin Qi. It is suitable to take this drink:
Polygala Root (Yuanzhi), Ginseng Root (Renshen), Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), and Turtle Plastron (Biejia).
Each five fen, ground into powder, decocted as a drink.
If sleep disturbances worsen, add a small amount of Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) to dispel exogenous heat and drive away fright from the Heart; if there is dizziness with wind-blood patterns, add Pholistoma Auriculatum Seed (Fangkuizi), and the disease will be quickly cured.

Second, frequent night terrors in the mother indicate fetal epilepsy. It is suitable to take this formula:
Calamina (Tiefen) is best, mixed appropriately with Cow's Milk; three or two leaves of Gold Leaf (Jinbo); upon ingestion, the disease cannot harm the body.

Third, preference for quiet places and dislike of noise indicates labor and stuffiness of the Blood Palace, causing fetal unrest. Urgent treatment is needed to prevent postnatal wind-epilepsy. Formula:
Rock Crystal (Shuijing) and Iron Filings (Tiejing), a small amount of Licorice Root (Gancao) is insufficient; Rhinoceros Horn (Xijiao) ground a hundred times, made into a drink to prevent disease. In urgent cases as described below, add Poria (Baifuling) and Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong), six fen, adjust carefully.
Grind Rhinoceros Horn and decoct with water along with the other five herbs into a drink; upon consumption, the Five Zang organs settle immediately. (Rock Crystal, Iron vessel residue, Licorice Root, Poria, Ophiopogon Tuber)

Fourth, hunger immediately after eating indicates vigorous Spleen and Stomach Qi in the fetus and maternal fetal heat. It is suitable to take Mulberry Root Bark Drink (Sangbaipi Yinzi):
Add Ginseng Root (Renshen) and Long Dan Cao (Longjia/Dragon Armor, likely referring to Gentiana Root); Tangerine Fruit Peel (Dafupi) nourishes the spirit best; add three liang of Pear Leaf (Luye); for the drink, add true Bamboo Leaves (Zhuyezhen).

Fifth, after entering the later months of pregnancy, anger upon seeing the husband and preference for quiet places indicate excessive Yin Qi in the fetus and weak Yang Qi. If born female, she will be safe; if male, he will die. Treatment is necessary. Formula:
Pine Needles (Songye) and Cypress Branches (Baizhi), use Black Ink Stick (Xiangmo) as discussed; mix these three into powder and consume, regardless of gender.
Grind Pine Needles, Cypress Branches, and Black Ink Stick together into powder.

Sixth, severe abdominal pain before delivery indicates imminent birth. Urgent treatment formula:
People often like to use Feixing insects (Feixing insects resemble biting lice, with horns on their heads). Eat all Feixing larvae to prevent difficult birth; to avoid death, use Ox Ear (Niuer) paste, wipe and apply, and natural birth will occur.
Burn Feixing hair to ash, mix with cold water to the consistency of a "yi zi" (approx. 1 qian).

Seventh, fetal sounds or speech-like noises before term, unheard by ordinary people, causing surprise and lacking treatment methods, is called fetal crying. Urgently take this divine formula:
Fetal crying and making sounds, surprising everyone in the world; earth from an ancient rat's burrow, hold in mouth to stop crying immediately.
Take a piece of earth the size of a bullet, hold in mouth, and crying stops immediately.

Eighth, if the mother worries about threatened miscarriage while the fetus is unborn, take this formula:
Black Ox Horn (Wuniujiao) and Cow Dung (Niufen).
Burn both to ash, mix with milk to the consistency of a "yi zi", ingest to stabilize.

Ninth, wind in the fetus causes death upon birth, due to internal wind striking external wind. How to verify? Carefully observe: before birth, if the mother's fingernails turn cyan and down to the vulva, resembling fetal convulsions/pain, this is the sign. Urgent treatment is needed to save life.
Specifically take August Lotus stems, decoct with milk and white honey mixing well; cut seven or twenty-one hairs from the mother, burn to ash, ingest to remove residual evil.
Another method:
August pond lotus branches, burn to ash, mix thinly with milk in a cup; ingest like a divine pinch to relieve pain, preventing premature death of daughter or son.

Tenth, when the fetus's life status is unclear, worrying about the mother's life, quacks fail to verify, wasting lives, late diagnosis, unknown treatment; thus, descendants should examine carefully.
Burn thirty-seven pieces of Sparrow Feather (Quemao) to ash, decoct with Cow's Milk and Rice Porridge (Jingmi); boil one Ancient Coin (Guqian), ingest to save the child.
Another formula for cold patterns:
Seven handfuls of Dog Hair (Goumao, burned to ash), seven stalks of Lettuce Heart (Wojuxin), mix with cold water, crush to juice, mother drinks to save child.

Eleventh, fetal pain in the womb. If the fetus is hot, the mother's fingernails turn cyan-yellow and she feels thirsty. If the fetus is cold, the mother feels vexed, painful, and vomits. Observe symptoms carefully.
Formula to treat mother's illness and simultaneously treat fetal disease:
Herbal ingredients are missing/corrupted.

Twelfth, failure to deliver after ten days in the womb is caused by striking external wind. Postnatal diseases are common; urgent treatment is needed. Take this effective Zouma Sanzi:
Summer ice-cold Shuihishi (Ice Stone), seven stalks of Rush Twigs (Dengcao) are appropriate; three chi of Red Dragon (Chilong, i.e., Red Horsehair); mix into powder with cold liquid, do not doubt.
Above are the twelve signs of fetal diseases, describing divine formulas, all effective.

*Xianren Shuijian*: For breech presentation, take this formula:
One part Talcum Powder (Huashi) ground to powder, two parts inverted spider (Zhidu, burned to ash); mix with urine from an uncircumcised boy (Tongzi Xiaobian) and administer; smooth delivery occurs shortly, effect is unparalleled. (Strictly avoid the husband gathering medicine.)

*Yang Shi Chanru Fang*: Pregnant women must not eat eggs or dried carp; consuming them together causes the child to suffer from sores. Pregnant women must not eat chicken meat with glutinous rice; doing so causes the child to have tapeworms (Cunbai).

*Xiao'er Xingzheng* discusses five foods taboo for mothers:
Eating garlic lacks sinews, causing softness of the whole body at birth, or damage to eyesight. Eating turtle lacks scales, causing short neck and hunchback/turtle chest in the child. Eating roe deer lacks gallbladder, causing frequent wind-phlegm seizures and kidney hernia. Eating rabbit lacks spleen, causing cleft lip, hexadactyly, or spleen qi disorders. Eating wild duck lacks marrow, causing night blindness and knee swelling wind.

*Xiao'er Xingzheng Lun*: Twelve internal fetal afflictions.
Children conceive in the abdomen for ten months then are born. Mothers become ill from eating the first five foods, and intercourse on the Eight Killing Days (Eight Solar Terms) is taboo, as well as on Heaven-Earth Convergence Thunder Days (July 16th annually). If not careful, twelve fetal afflictions occur as follows:
Blindness, Deafness, Aphasia, Soft Knees, Hooked Kidney, Hunchback, Turtle Chest, Cleft Lip, Polydactyly, Nasal Defects, Short Tongue, Clenched Hands.

*Wuguan Guanzhenzhunang*: Five signs of healthy children:
Long tongue indicates vigorous Heart Qi. Bright pupils indicate vigorous Liver Qi. Plump skin indicates vigorous Lung Qi. Red lips indicate vigorous Spleen Qi. Large, full ears indicate vigorous Kidney Qi.

*Wuguan Guanzhenzhunang*: Untreatable congenital defects:
Cleft lip/nose results from threatened miscarriage. Eunuch-like appearance results from conception during menstruation. Open fontanelle results from insufficient fetal Qi. Soft bones and soreness result from conception while parents were drunk. Short limbs result from lateral position conception. Missing nose/ears also result from lateral position conception. Congenital deaf-muteness results from conception on "Heaven Deaf Earth Mute" days. Blindness results from excessive garlic consumption in late pregnancy. Congenital impotence/virginity results from conception while parents had urgent need to urinate/defecate. Imperforate anus results from consuming toxic substances. Lack of hair results from maternal illness and ingestion of mineral drugs pre-birth. Swollen fontanelle results from insufficient fetal Qi. Nasal issues: meridians connect to the nose; wind-pathogen invasion causes Qi disharmony and fluid stagnation. Red body color results from excessive heat in the mother during pregnancy entering the fetus; though it fades, it harms the child, clearing in three days for mild cases. Yellow body color results from conception when parents were overly full; the child is born yellow.
