Ten days after the Summer Solstice, if vomiting and diarrhea occur accompanied by high fever, this heat arises because nine-tenths of a child's internal organs are characterized by heat. This may be due to damage from consuming hot-natured milk or food that fails to digest, resulting in deep yellow stools. The governing formula is Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder).
After the Great Heat solar term, if vomiting and diarrhea occur with a body temperature that feels warm but appears slightly hot, it indicates six-tenths heat and four-tenths cold within the internal organs. Symptoms include vomiting undigested milk/food, yellowish-white loose stools, apparent thirst, and variable feeding habits (sometimes eating, sometimes not). Administer small doses of Yihuang San (Yellow Protecting Powder) before meals and larger doses of Yulu San after meals.
Seven days after the Start of Autumn, if vomiting and diarrhea occur with a moderate body temperature, it indicates three-tenths heat and seven-tenths cold within the internal organs. Symptoms include inability to feed on milk, excessive sleepiness, restlessness, belching, sighing, sleeping with eyes partially open (exposed eyeballs), white lips, frequent hiccups, desire for defecation without thirst. Administer large doses of Yihuang San before meals and small doses of Yulu San after meals.
After the Autumn Equinox, if vomiting and diarrhea occur with a cold body and deficiency of Yang Qi, inability to feed on milk, dry heaving, and watery green stools, the Spleen should be tonified using Yihuang San as the primary treatment. Purging methods must not be used.
If vomiting and diarrhea are caused by wind-cold invasion, with moderate body temperature alternating between cold and hot, excessive sleepiness, coarse breathing, yellowish-white stools, vomiting of undigested milk/food, and occasional coughing, along with syndromes involving the five Zang organs: first decoct the sovereign and minister herbs, administer Daqing Gao (Great Cyan Ointment) first, followed by Yihuang San. If purging has already been performed previously, or if there are no indications for purging, absolutely do not purge. This condition results from Cold invading the Spleen and Lungs, preventing food intake.
If vomiting and diarrhea are caused by wind-cold invasion, with fever, excessive sleepiness, ability to eat, restlessness, incessant drinking, expectoration of phlegm, and yellow watery stools, this is vomiting and diarrhea due to Stomach deficiency-heat and thirst. One should generate fluids in the Stomach to stop the thirst; after stopping thirst, use dispersing methods. Use Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) extensively for dispersing, combined with Daqing Gao for dispersal.
If vomiting and diarrhea are caused by wind-cold invasion, with a cool body, spitting foam, greenish-white stools, restlessness, absence of thirst, belching, sighing, lethargy, and exposed eyeballs, this is vomiting and diarrhea resulting from prolonged wind-cold invasion. As stated in the *Neijing*: "Frailty leads to vomiting and diarrhea." One should first tonify the Spleen, then disperse pathogens. Tonify the Spleen with Yihuang San; disperse pathogens with Daqing Gao as the primary treatment. These two syndromes commonly occur in spring and autumn.
Furthermore, it is said: Yellow, red, or black stools indicate heat-toxin; govern with Doukou Xianglian Wan (Cardamom and Coptis Pill). Greenish-white stools with undigested grains indicate Stomach cold; govern with Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill). Vomiting and diarrhea with undigested milk/food indicate food injury; purge with Xiaoji Wan (Eliminate Accumulation Pill).
Vomiting and diarrhea with lethargy and exposed eyeballs indicate Stomach deficiency-heat; govern with Baizhu San. Vomiting and diarrhea with lethargy but closed eyes indicate Stomach excess-heat; govern with Yulu San. Vomiting and diarrhea with undigested milk/food indicate food injury; purge with Xiaoji Wan.
Commentary: Vomiting milk with yellow stools indicates injury from hot-natured milk; vomiting milk with green stools indicates injury from cold-natured milk. Both conditions require purging. Examining this principle reveals it is a method of "meeting and overcoming" (attacking directly). It is preferable to use Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) for heat-injury to guide rebellious Qi downward, and Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) for cold-injury to warm the middle Jiao, thereby restoring natural vitality.
