During the spring season when Wood energy is vigorous, the pathology corresponds to the Liver Meridian (Liver Channel). Anger causes Qi rebellion, rising upward instead of descending, thereby injuring the Liver. When the Liver is injured, its function of storing Liver Blood (Gan Xue) is impaired; as the Liver is the Mother of the Gallbladder, Liver Heat (Gan Re) generates Wind. Consequently, symptoms include hot, red, and swollen eyes, profuse tearing like rain, photophobia (aversion to light), and difficulty opening the eyes. This constitutes a syndrome of Excess Heat in the Liver Meridian. The Liver corresponds to the East, Jia-Yi Wood, manifests in the eye as the Wind Wheel (Feng Lun), penetrates the Qingjing Kuo, and connects with the Gallbladder Meridian. It is appropriate to treat this with Xie Gan Tang (Draining Liver Decoction).
Xie Gan Tang (Draining Liver Decoction)
In spring eye diseases, draining the Liver should be prioritized. Add Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root), Bo He (Mint Herb), Zhi Zi (Gardenia Fruit), Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), and Bai Shao (White Peony Root). Further add Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Jing Jie (Schizonepeta Spike), Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root), Tong Cao (Tetrapanax Pith), Hua Shi (Talcum), Da Huang (Rhubarb Rhizome), Long Dan Cao (Gentian Root), and Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome). First fumigate the eyes with the decoction, then take it frequently. Redness and swelling will subside rapidly, which is gratifying. Subsequently, combine with Zhen Gan Wan (Settling Liver Pill) to permanently eradicate the root of old ailments during spring.
Zhen Gan Wan (Settling Liver Pill)
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 8 liang, soaked in rice wash water), Gu Jing Cao (Evodiae Flos, 3 liang), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 liang), Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba, 3 liang, nodes removed), Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha, 1 liang, calcined), Zao Jiao Mo (Gleditsiae Fructus Powder, 1 liang), Yang Gan (Ovis Hepaticum, one piece, not washed with water, membrane scraped off with a bamboo knife, pounded into mud).
Pound the above powdered medicines together for a thousand beats, form pills the size of paulownia seeds, and take thirty pills each time with clear tea.
Bu Gan Wan (Tonify Liver Pill) treats dim vision due to Liver Deficiency, gradual blurring, frequent appearance of black spots (floaters), and diplopia (seeing double).
Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, boiled in wine and pounded), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed, stir-fried, 3 liang each), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, 3 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 3 liang), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 2 liang), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 1 liang), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 1 liang, stir-fried), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandrae Fructus, 1 liang), Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen, 1 liang, stir-fried), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Rui Ren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen, 3 qian), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, 1 liang).
Grind the above into fine powder. Mix with Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 3 liang) and Tu Gan (Leporis Hepaticum, one piece), pound into a paste.
Make pills with refined honey, size of paulownia seeds. Take two qian with decoction of Deng Cao (Junci Medulla). Avoid radish, garlic, chili, ginger, fishy smells, dog and mutton meat, fried foods, oily noodles, and raw/cold foods.
During summer when Fire energy is vigorous, the pathology corresponds to the Heart Meridian (Heart Channel). Excessive worry and mental labor injure the Heart, preventing the Heart from generating Blood. Insufficient Blood fails to nourish the Liver, resulting in visual impairment. The four corners of both eyes manifest as canthi (inner and outer corners). This belongs to the Heart. Irregular emotions, excessive thinking, and unrestrained sexual activity cause Kidney Water to fail to control Heart Fire. Fire attacks the eyes, causing pterygium (Nourou Banjing - fleshy growth invading the cornea), continuous bleeding, severe pain making eye opening difficult. If untreated for a long time, nebula (Yi) forms on the pupil. Symptoms include fever and mouth/tongue ulcers. The disease resides in the Heart. The Heart corresponds to the South, Bing-Ding Fire, manifests in the eye as the Blood Wheel (Xue Lun), penetrates the Baoyang Kuo, and connects with the Mingmen Meridian.
Xie Xin Tang (Draining Heart Decoction)
For red eyes in summer, drain the Heart Meridian. Use Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), and Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). Combine with Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Hua Shi (Talcum), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). Add Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Zi Cao (Arnebiae Radix); the efficacy is miraculous.
During autumn when Metal energy is vigorous, the pathology corresponds to the Lung Meridian (Lung Channel). The Lung is the Canopy, located superiorly. Imbalance of cold and heat damages the Lung Meridian. A damaged Lung cannot generate Water, leading to uncontrolled Fire attacking the eyes. Consequently, white nebula (Yi) appears on the black cornea, termed "Metal overcoming Wood." The Lung corresponds to the West, Geng-Xin Metal, manifests in the eye as the Qi Wheel (Qi Lun), penetrates the Chuandao Kuo, and connects with the Large Intestine Meridian.
Xie Fei Tang (Draining Lung Decoction)
In autumn, eye diseases require clearing the Lung. Use Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Ting Li Zi (Lepidii Semen), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). Add Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix). Assist with Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), and Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix). Adjust dosage based on depth of illness; do not increase Ma Huang dosage within three doses.
During winter when Water energy is vigorous, the pathology corresponds to the Kidney Meridian (Kidney Channel). Sexual exhaustion and indulgence in alcohol and lust cause visual disturbances resembling flying flies (myodesopsia). Objects appear like piled smoke, and the sun looks like water ripples. If untreated, it progresses to Qing Mang (blindness/atrophy). The Kidney corresponds to the North, Ren-Gui Water, manifests in the eye as the Water Wheel (Shui Lun), penetrates the Jin Ye Kuo, and connects with the Bladder Meridian.
Xie Shen Tang (Draining Kidney Decoction)
Treating kidney meridian eye diseases in winter uses Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Hei Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, also known as Xuan Shen). Add Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). Decoct in water and take warm to restore vision.
The Spleen and Stomach belong to Central Wu-Ji Earth. Their energy peaks for eighteen days in each season. In the eye, they manifest as the Flesh Wheel (Rou Lun), penetrate the Shui Gu Kuo, and connect with the Lung Meridian.
Xie Pi Tang (Draining Spleen Decoction)
Drain Spleen using Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), and Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix). Add Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Yuan Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), Qiao Mai (Setariae Milicae Fructus), Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), and Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix). Include Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Man Jing Zi (Viticis Fructus). This promotes dispersion of stagnation and dredging of Earth qi. Dian Jian Xiao Feng Dan (Remove Wind Powder) applied topically has great merit, completely dispelling wind-heat for natural health.
Xiao Feng Dan (Remove Wind Powder)
Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 5 qian), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, 5 qian), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 5 qian), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 5 qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 5 qian), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, 5 qian), Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba, 1 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Soak in one zhong of water overnight, strain. Add Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Flos, 1 qian) and Bai Mi (White Honey, 4 liang). Boil into an ointment, remove fire toxicity, and apply to the eyes.
Another treatment for excessive tearing:
Ji Yu Dan (Cyprini Carassii Bile, seven pieces), Ren Ru (Human Milk, one zhong).
Mix evenly, steam once or twice over rice, and apply to the eyes. Tears will naturally cease.
