Zhu Jichuan said: The key for a physician lies in accurate pattern differentiation. Upon entering a case, one must first know the family's wealth status, whether the season is hot or cold, the child's innate constitution, the quality of their form and color, whether the pulse is weak or strong, whether the skin is tough or tender, whether the pox eruptions are sparse or dense, whether the distribution is favorable or unfavorable, whether Qi and Blood are deficient or excess, whether the exterior and interior are cold or hot, whether the voice is clear or turbid, whether the mouth and tongue are dry or moist, whether sleep and rest are peaceful, whether movements and actions are calm or restless, how much food and drink they consume, and whether urination and defecation are firm and smooth. There are also cases where auspicious signs hide within ominous ones, and vice versa, which must not fail to be distinguished. After carefully examining these factors, treatment can be administered appropriately according to the circumstances.
