To treat acute cold-strike syndrome, after taking the first three formulas, if yang qi has returned, the body is warm, complexion is lively, hands and feet are no longer cold, and vomiting and diarrhea are gradually alleviated. The fourth formula aims to harmonize the zang-fu organs andying-wei (nutritive and defensive qi), preventing harm caused by drug bias.
Fuzi (Prepared, skin and umbilicus removed), Ganjiang (Prepared), Rougui (2g), Danggui, Renshen, Gancao (Honey-fried), Huangqi (Honey-fried), Baizhu (Earth-fried). Decoct with two cups of water until one cup remains. Add... [Text incomplete in source]
Yu Jiayan stated: "After taking the previous medicines for two or three doses, one feels that Yangming channel qi has recovered in the body, dizziness and vertigo are significantly lighter, and the spirit is quite joyful." If further adding Huangqi, Baizhu, Wuweizi, Shaoyao... [Text fragmented/incomplete] ...it will inevitably cause abortion. This is without... [Text fragmented] ...drop... [Text fragmented].
For cases where symptoms of cold-strike have completely disappeared after medication, but there is slight obstruction in the meridians, and acrid-warm medicines fail to bring a sense of unblocked comfort, the fifth formula assists qi-tonifying herbs to regulate slowly.
Renshen, Zhimai Dong, Shaoyao (Wine-fried, 3g), Huangqi (Honey-fried, 4g), Shengdihuang (6g), Gancao (Honey-fried, 2g), Muli (Oyster Shell) [Source text truncated at 'Mu'], decocted to one cup. Add a small amount of Lijie (Pear Juice).
Yu Jiayan stated: "After using the previous flat-supplementing methods, the intention of laying down arms and advocating culture (metaphorically: stopping attack and turning to harmony) has been shown. Subsequently, stubborn phlegm remains accumulated in the meridians; only sweet-cold... [Text incomplete] ...why [Text incomplete]."
The *Ren Shu* (Book of Living People) states: "Treating red face and hot body, without mental restlessness but with physical agitation, desiring to drink water but unable to swallow it, is named Daiyang Syndrome (Floating Yang Syndrome)." Cheng Wuji stated: "Fan-zao (Restlessness and Agitation) refers to initial mental restlessness gradually developing into physical agitation. Zao-fan refers to initial physical agitation followed by continuous mental restlessness. Progression from Fan to Zao indicates Heat; initial Zao followed by Fan, characterized by oppressive mental stuffiness and recurrent agitation, indicates Yin Excess repelling Yang. Although extremely agitated and wanting to lie in mud or water, the inability to swallow water signifies Qi about to collapse struggling against itself, like a lamp flickering brightly before extinguishing. Internal heat is called Fan, referring to mental depression and restlessness, which is Fire with roots. Therefore, cases with only Fan or Fan preceding Zao are treatable. External heat is called Zao, referring to physical and limb agitation, wanting to strip clothes and enter a well, which is Fire without roots. Therefore, cases with only Zao or Zao preceding Fan are untreatable. Generally, isolated Fan without Zao mostly belongs to Heat, while Palpitations belong to Deficiency. Isolated Zao without Fan mostly belongs to Cold, though occasionally caused by Fire Pathogens.)"
Fuzi (Prepared), Ganjiang, Aye (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Huanglian, Zhimu, Renshen, Maidong, Wuweizi, Gancao. Decoct with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Dazao (Jujube), and Congbai (Scallion White). Add Tongbian (Child's Urine).
Fuzi, Ganjiang, and Aye are drugs that restore Yang. Assisted by Huanglian, Renshen, and Gancao, they tonify Yang Deficiency and retreat Yin Fire, which is what is meant by 'Sweet-Warm can eliminate Great Heat'.
