[General Discussion] Whenever the Liver has heat, the mouth tastes sour. When the Heart has heat, the mouth tastes bitter. When the Spleen has heat, the mouth tastes sweet. When the Lung has heat, the mouth tastes pungent (spicy). When the Kidney has heat, the mouth tastes salty. When the Stomach has heat, the mouth tastes bland. Additionally, there is the symptom of halitosis (bad breath).
[Mouth Ulcers] Use Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, stir-fried), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis), and Renzhongbai (Calcinus Humanis) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder and apply externally to the affected area. Take old white river snail shells (calcined to charcoal but retaining medicinal properties), add Ercha (Catechu) and Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) in small amounts. Grind together into an extremely fine powder and insufflate into the affected area one or two times for immediate effect. If eating is impossible due to pain, use Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis, ground into fine powder) sprinkled on the lesion, after which eating can resume. In cases where mouth ulcers prevent food intake and cooling medicines fail to heal them, this indicates deficiency of Earth in the Middle Jiao with uncontrolled ascending Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire). One must administer Lizhong Tang (Replenish the Middle Decoction: Renshen, Baizhu, Gancao, Heijiang) to tonify the Spleen-Stomach deficiency; Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) disperses the superficial fire; for severe cases, Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) may be added, or Guigui (Cinnamomi Cortex) held in the mouth until healing occurs. Alternatively, use Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) in equal parts, grind into fine powder, and apply to the lesion; salivation will cease and healing will follow. Crush fresh ginger to extract natural juice and rinse the mouth several times; salivation indicates efficacy. Burn twenty ancient copper coins until red-hot, drop them into wine, and drink; immediate effect is expected.
[Mouth Gangrene Ulcers] Take ten red dates (calcined to charcoal but retaining medicinal properties), add 2 fen of Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), grind into fine powder, and insufflate into the affected area for immediate effect.
[Sanjiao Excess Heat Causing Mouth and Tongue Ulcers] Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix): 4 liang in Spring, 6 liang in Summer/Autumn, 5 liang in Winter. Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma): 4 liang in Spring, 5 liang in Summer, 3 liang in Autumn/Winter. Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma): 3 liang in Spring, 1 liang in Summer, 2 liang in Autumn, 5 liang in Winter. Stir-fry each separately, grind into fine powder, and make pills with honey, sized like wu-tong seeds. Take 50-70 pills per dose, washed down with warm water after meals. This is Sanhuang Wan (Three Yellows Pill). (The powder can also be mixed with sesame oil and applied to all types of heat-toxins sores with great efficacy.) Use Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus) ground into powder, mixed with vinegar, applied to the sole of the foot overnight to guide fire downward for cure. For any mouth ulcer, regardless of whether it is new or old, when going to bed at night, pull the testicles tightly by hand and rub left and right alternately 30-50 times. Perform this action whenever waking up at night. Those caused by alcohol consumption will heal in one night; chronic cases will show improvement in 3-5 nights.
[Mouth Lesions] Huashi (Talcum): 1 qian. Chensha (Cinnabar): 3 qian. Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum): 2 fen. Grind into powder and sprinkle on the lesion for immediate effect. (Avoid rinsing with water; this formula also treats E'kou chuang/Goose-mouth sore). If broken and ulcerated, use Ivory or Elephant Skin scraped into fine powder and applied to the site.
[Mouth Rot] Sheng Mingfan (Raw Alum), ground extremely fine, applied to the lesion for immediate effect. Or hold in the mouth for a long time, rinse with water, and hold again. For chronic non-healing rot, use Renzhongbai (Calcinus Humanis), Zhen Tonglv (Basic Copper Carbonate), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) in equal parts, add a little Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum), grind into powder, and apply to the affected area. This also treats Xiao'er zouma yagan (Pediatric Gangrenous Gingivitis).
[Lip Swelling and Pain] Unbearable pain indicates Wind-Heat in the Stomach. Prick the area with a porcelain edge to release purple blood, then rub with pig fat ground using an ancient copper coin to reduce swelling. Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), raw and ground fine, mixed with pig bile for application, is effective.
[Lip Dryness and Cracking] Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) calcined to ash, mixed with pig fat for application, is effective. Drink olive infusion; crush the kernel inside the olive and apply to dry areas; or apply Zhīyān (Rouge); all provide immediate relief. For cracking with bleeding, apply Bai Meihua ban (White Plum Blossom petals) to the lesion for immediate effect. The above formulas are also used for treating lip sores.
[Halitosis] Decoct Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba) into a strong decoction, hold slightly in the mouth. This also treats oral bleeding. Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) ground into powder, infused in water as tea, taken frequently for effect. Ercha (Catechu): 4 liang. Guihua (Osmanthus Flower), Pengsha (Borax), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba): 5 qian each. Grind all finely. Decoct Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) 3 liang into paste, mix with powders to make pills. Hold in mouth to dissolve slowly. Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (select straight ones, bake on new tile until dry and break silk threads), grind into fine powder, apply sparingly to the lesion; curing upon expulsion of saliva.
[Tongue Woodiness] Tongue swollen large filling the mouth, hard and swollen, speech impaired. Or tongue protrudes out of the mouth. This is due to reckless movement of Heart Fire, with heat knotting in the tongue. Urgent treatment is required, otherwise it leads to death. Baifan (Alumen) and Baicaoshuang (Soot from Chimney) in equal parts, ground fine. Mix with natural juice of fermented eggplant for oral administration. If eggplant is unavailable, use white wine. If unable to take medicine, use real Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), ground fine and thinned, frequently brush onto the tongue; swelling will recede. Alternatively, bleed using needle pricking. After slight reduction, urgently use Tongcao (Akebiae Caulis), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus) [each 1 qian], Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [0.5 qian], Dengxincao (Junci Medullia) [20 roots]. Decoct in water, take after meals. Avoid fried foods for half a month to prevent recurrence. (If using needles, do not prick randomly under the tongue.)
[Tongue Protrusion Receding into Mouth] Apply Sesame Oil (Ricini Oleum) to cotton paper, form into fuses (3-5 pieces), light them, blow out immediately, and smoke the affected area with the smoke. After a while, swelling subsides. For tongue protruding one cun, grind 1 qian of Meihua Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) fine and apply to tongue to retract it. These are miraculous verified formulas.
[Double Tongue] Tongue tip overlapping and thickening is called Double Tongue. Ya Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) (non-borer, 4-5 spines, remove skin/seeds, roast until charred), Jingjisui (Schizonepetae Spica) [1 qian]. Grind into fine powder, mix with rice vinegar, apply to lesion for resolution.
[Tongue Numbness Loss of Taste] Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) stir-fried with wine and ground fine. Make pills with rice paste. Take 5-7 fen per dose, 1 qian for severe cases, washed down with warm water after meals. Effective after several doses.
[Bleeding from Tongue Like Needle Holes] Decoct Xiangru (Elsholetziae Herba) and drink. Fa Hui (Hair Ash) 2 qian, mixed with rice vinegar, apply to bleeding site. Huaimi (Sophorae Flos) (stir-fried and ground into powder), sprinkle on site to stop bleeding. Subsequently, tonify with Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber).
