Mingtang Tu (Facial Zang-Fu Mapping Chart). The internal areas correspond to fourteen, and the external areas to eleven; it is feared that one may not be able to distinguish them in a hurry. Only the traditionally transmitted method—forehead corresponds to Heart, nose to Spleen, left cheek to Liver, right cheek to Lung, and chin to Kidney—is simple, direct, and followable. One must also examine the five colors to determine diseases of the five Zang organs. (Liver is green, Lung is white, Heart is red, Spleen is yellow, Kidney is black.) When color spreads over the whole face, distinguish whether there is Shen Spirit or not; when color appears in specific zones, examine their mutual generation and restriction. Dull and dim colors indicate disease arising from within; purple and turbid colors indicate pathogenic factors acquired from outside. Stagnation often manifests as haggardness; prolonged illness leads to emaciation and sallow yellow complexion. Brightness at Shan Gen (root of the nose) indicates an impending recovery; darkening around the mouth suggests Kidney essence exhaustion, which should not be treated. Words cannot fully express the meaning; medical principles require intuitive understanding.
The Classics state: Red should resemble silk wrapping cinnabar, not ochre; white should resemble goose feathers, not salt; green should resemble the luster of dark jade, not indigo; yellow should resemble silk wrapping realgar, not loess soil; black should resemble double-lacquered color, not earthy gray. Green like kingfisher feathers indicates life; red like goose comb indicates life; yellow like crab belly indicates life; white like pig fat indicates life; black like crow feathers indicates life. *Ling Shu* says: Each of the five colors appears in its respective zone; observe its floating or sinking to know depth; observe its luster or withering to judge success or failure; observe its dispersion or aggregation (pronounced "tuan") to know duration; view the distribution of color up and down to locate the disease site. Accumulate spirit in the heart to understand past patterns.
