To subdue Yin fire. To tonify Kidney water.
Da Bu Yin Wan (Great Tonification of Yin Pill) is an exquisite formula. Those who ask the Way blindly slander it for being cold in nature. Rehmanniae Radix (Shu Di Huang), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhi Mu), and Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo) both nourish and descend. Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum (Gui Ban) is heavy and sinking, capable of subduing and restraining hyperactive Yang. (Phellodendri Cortex and Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, each 4 liang, stir-fried with salt and wine. Prepared Rehmanniae Radix moistened with yellow wine. Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum fried with suet until yellow. Each 6 liang, ground into powder. Steamed porcine spinal cord mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 50-60 pills per dose, on an empty stomach, delivered with ginger soup, salt soup, or yellow wine as preferred.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: Anemarrhenae Rhizoma and Phellodendri Cortex are cold to clear heat and bitter to descend fire. However, bitter substances tend to be drying; therefore, porcine spinal cord is used to moisten it, and Prepared Rehmanniae Radix to nourish it. This is a standard method for treating fever due to Yin deficiency. Nevertheless, clearing heat using only cooling herbs is not a treatment that probes the root. This formula uses Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum as the chief herb, employing the method of using shellfish/shell materials to subdue Yang. Danxi’s Da Bu Yin Wan is superior in efficacy to Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). Li Shicai, Xue Lizhai, Zhang Jingyue, and others discarded it because of its bitter-cold nature; they had not penetrated the subtleties of creation regarding Yin and Yang.
A miraculous formula for treating Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome).
This is the previous formula with added ingredients. (Phellodendri Cortex, Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, and Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, each 3 liang; Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum 4 liang; Paeoniae Radix Alba (Bai Shao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui), and Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niu Xi), each 2 liang; Tigris Ossis (Hu Jing Gu), Cynomorii Herba (Suo Yang), and Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chen Pi), each 1.5 liang; Zingiberis Rhizoma (Gan Jiang) 5 qian. Wine-boiled male sheep meat is used to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 50-60 pills per dose, delivered with ginger soup, salt soup, or yellow wine.)
Jia Wei Hu Qian Wan (Additive Tiger-Hiding Pill) (Treats various deficiencies and insufficiencies, pain in waist and legs, weakness in walking, strengthens Yuan Qi, and nourishes Kidney water). This is the previous formula with further additions. (Following the Hu Qian Wan formula, add Ginseng Radix (Ren Shen), Astragali Radix (Huang Qi), Eucommiae Cortex (Du Zhong), Cuscutae Semen (Tu Si Zi), Poria (Fu Ling), Psoraleae Fructus (Po Gu Zhi), Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shan Yao), and Lycii Fructus (Gou Qi). Remove sheep meat and Zingiberis Rhizoma. Use steamed porcine spinal cord mixed with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Administration follows the previous method.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: Observing these two formulas reveals the miraculous efficacy of bitter-cold substances, which is beyond the comprehension of Xue Lizhai and Zhang Jingyue. Yu Jiayan, in *Yi Yi Cao* (Meaningful Grass), stated that "bitter-cold can cultivate vital Qi," which is indeed words from one who has seen the Dao.
It can tonify all types of deficiency, hundred injuries, Wu Lao (Five Labors), and Qi Shang (Seven Injuries); its effects cannot be fully described. If each person prepares one batch and takes it, one can extend life by twelve years. The method requires four people to jointly prepare one deer, dividing the medicine among themselves to take. After one year, they prepare another together. If four people prepare it together for four years, each person obtains the medicine of a whole deer. If one person prepares a batch alone, it may spoil over long storage, and the medicinal power will be incomplete. The method uses one medium-sized deer, slaughtered and cleaned. Wash the entrails well, then cook them with the deer meat and wine. Slice the meat horizontally, dry it by baking, and grind it into powder. Take the skin and entrails, return them to the original broth, and boil down to a paste. Mix this paste with the herbal powder and meat powder, adding refined honey to form pills. The bones must be fried with suet and ground into powder, then added together. (Ginseng Radix, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Bai Zhu), Poria, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata (Zhi Cao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong), Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di Huang), Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, Asparagi Radix (Tian Dong), Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Dong), Lycii Fructus, Eucommiae Cortex, Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Euryales Semen (Qian Shi), Cuscutae Semen, Schisandrae Fructus (Wu Wei Zi), Cynomorii Herba, Cistanches Herba (Rou Cong Rong), Psoraleae Fructus, Morinda Officinalis Radix (Ba Ji Tian), Trigonospermae Semen (Hu Lu Ba), Cyathulae Radix (Chuan Xu Duan), Rubi Fructus (Fu Pen Zi), Torreya Seed (Chu Shi Zi), Urina Foenisecii (Qiu Shi), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, each 1 jin; Zanthoxyli Pericarpium (Chuan Jiao), Foeniculi Fructum (Xiao Hui Xiang), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chen Xiang), Natrii Chlorum (Qing Yan), each half jin. The method requires refining all herbs into powder, waiting for the deer glue to be ready, mixing and pounding into pills the size of tung tree seeds, drying them. Make fifty small bags of raw silk, each weighing about one jin. Hang them in a ventilated place. When one bag is finished, take another. On damp days, it is advisable to bake them once or twice with fire. Take 80-90 pills per dose, on an empty stomach and before bed, delivered with ginger soup or salt soup. In winter, deliver with wine.)
Chen Xiuyuan said: This formula is grand and majestic; wealthy families all favor it. I, Chen Xiuyuan, am not versed in elegance and do not annotate it; those who understand will know naturally. However, there are things I must say. For individuals who are obese, consume rich foods, have much phlegm, and harbor internal damp-heat, taking this pill violates the warning that "indulgence in rich food causes carbuncles and sores." It is only suitable for those who are emaciated due to overwork, live simply, or are elderly and frail. Taking it twice daily as a snack provides some benefit. ○ Heavy substances can calm fright (Note: Original text "KT" is interpreted contextually, likely referring to "Zhen Qie" or similar calming properties associated with heavy/mineral/shell substances).
