Treats Shi Qi disease (food stagnation qi disorder), characterized by aversion to the smell of food. Acupoint: Zusanli (ST36).
Treats Shi Qi disease. Acupoint: Dazhu (BL11).
Treats loss of taste after eating. Acupoints: Baihui (GV20), Shaoshang (LU11).
Treats heavy body, inability to eat, loss of taste, deficiency-fullness in the epigastrium, frequent urge to defecate, preference for lying down. Acupoints: Needle Weiwuan (Zhongwan, CV12), Taicang (Zhongwan, CV12). (Additionally, taking Jianzhong Tang and Pingwei Wan is beneficial).
Treats excessive eating but emaciation. Acupoint: Pishu (BL20).
Treats excessive eating but emaciation. Acupoint: Shenshu (BL23).
Treats cold distension in the stomach, excessive eating but emaciation. Acupoints: Weishu (BL21), Shenshu (BL23).
Treats excessive eating but emaciation. Acupoints: Pishu (BL20), Dachangshu (BL25).
Treats deficiency and exhaustion of the Zang-Fu organs, coldness and fatigue of the lower Yuan, etc. (from *Zisheng Jing*). Acupoint: Moxibustion on Dantian (CV4). People often say that the age of "seven sevens" (49 years old) is when the Pan Tai Sui suppresses the Ben Ming (destiny year); sixty-one years old is also when the Tai Sui suppresses the Ben Ming. People encountering these years often cannot avoid disaster, which is indeed inevitable. However, does not the *Analects* say, "The auspicious person turns misfortune into good fortune"? I have studied the *Suwen*, which states that at the age of "eight eights" (64 years old), essence and marrow are exhausted; at this time, one should restrain desires (*Qianjin Fang* says: For those over fifty, ejaculation once a month is appropriate; essentially, by forty-eight, one should adjust according to this principle). *Qianjin Fang* records the *Sunu Lun*: For those who are sixty, close the essence and do not ejaculate; at this age, desires should be cut off. If one should restrain but does not, or should cut off but cannot, dying because of this is self-inflicted. Is it the fault of the years? Humans are not at fault; even if the years bring calamity, it can be avoided. This is what is meant by "turning misfortune into good fortune." Although not moxibusting Dantian is also acceptable (Dantian can be moxibusted with 77 cones, or 300-500 cones).
Treats deficiency and exhaustion of Yang Qi, spermatorrhea, infertility. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Zhongji (CV3). Zhongji is also called Qiyuan (Source of Qi), as it is the root of Qi. When human Yang Qi is deficient and exhausted, should one not moxibust this point to replenish Qi? (According to the commentary on *Nan Jing*: Dantian is also named Zhongji, meaning Dantian is located in the center of the upper, lower, left, and right of the human body, hence called "Ji" (Ultimate/Pole). This point is also called Zhongji, only one cun away from Dantian. Although not in the very center of Dantian, it is not far).
Treats stomach cold, epigastric and abdominal distension, insufficiency of Stomach Qi, aversion to food smells, borborygmus, abdominal pain, indigestion.
Qin Chengzu said: It treats all diseases. Hua Tuo said: It treats Wu Lao (Five Exhaustions) and emaciation, Qi Shang (Seven Injuries) and deficiency, blood stasis in the chest, breast abscess. *Mingtang Jing* said: For people over thirty, if Zusanli is not moxibusted, Qi will rush upward to the eyes. *Qianjin Fang* said: It treats insufficiency of Yin Qi, hardness of the lower abdomen, heat disease with no sweat, bitter taste in mouth, high fever, body opisthotonos, trismus, lumbar pain, inability to look back, insufficiency of Stomach Qi, chronic diarrhea, indigestion, hypochondriac fullness, inability to stand for long, delirious speech, manic laughter, fear, anger, cursing, cholera with enuresis, loss of Qi and Yang厥 (cold limbs), feeling chilly and aversion to cold. Acupoint: Zusanli (ST36).
For all such diseases, needle and moxibustion should be applied, up to 500 cones, or as few as 200-300 cones.
*Zisheng Jing* cites *Duanju*: For the four limbs, removing wind pathogen is sufficient; excessive moxibustion is not suitable. From 7 cones to 77 cones, do not exceed the number corresponding to the patient's age. Therefore, *Tongren Acu-Moxia Picture Classic* only states for Zusanli: moxibustion of 3 cones, needle insertion of 5 fen. But *Mingtang Shangjing* says: Daily moxibustion of 7 cones, up to 100 cones, is not too much. *Qianjin Fang* then says: Up to 500 cones, or as few as 200-300 cones, how can it be so many? In summary, daily moxibustion of 7 cones, or using very small cones, can reach 14 cones; over several days, moxibustion up to 77 cones. Once the moxa blister dries, re-moxibust to comply with the saying "If you want to be safe, never let Zusanli and Dantian dry [heal]." If one follows the large number of cones in *Qianjin Fang*, it might violate the warning in *Duanju*. I previously suffered from gouty arthritis (Hongxiang Jiao), with foot swelling in spring, worse in summer and autumn, subsiding in winter. One summer, following the acupoint location described in the *Suwen* commentary, I used warm needle micro-acupuncture, and the swelling disappeared the next day. Its efficacy is so miraculous. Even Miao Ci (lateral puncture) is like this, let alone moxibustion. Those with this disease must know this. This method not only treats foot swelling but all diseases.
Treats chronic cold damaging Zang-Fu organs, uncontrollable diarrhea, stroke with loss of consciousness, etc. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Shenque (CV8).
Wang Shi said: It was traditionally said that someone remained youthful in appearance despite old age, probably because they moxibusted one cone on the navel every year using rat feces. I once suffered from loose stools; after moxibusting 21 cones in one night, I did not need to use the toilet that night. After consecutive nights of moxibustion, I did not need to use the toilet for those nights. This fully verifies the classic's statement that it primarily treats uncontrollable diarrhea. Also, past my prime, I felt weakness in the left hand and foot; accidentally moxibusting this point cured me. Later, colleagues told me that many stroke patients are cured by moxibusting this point, whether 100 cones or 300-500 cones. The classic also states it treats stroke, referring to this point.
Treats deficiency and exhaustion of Zang Qi, insufficiency of True Qi, and all Qi disorders that have not healed for a long time. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Qihai (CV6).
The human body has Four Seas: Qihai (Sea of Qi), Xuehai (Sea of Blood), Suihai (Sea of Marrow), and Shui Gu Zhi Hai (Sea of Water and Grain). Qihai is the first. Qihai is the sea of Yuan Qi (Original Qi). Humans take Yuan Qi as their root; if Yuan Qi is uninjured, disease does not harm; if Yuan Qi is injured, death occurs even without disease. One should frequently moxibust this point to strengthen Yuan Yang. If one waits until disease strikes to moxibust, it may be too late.
Treats men with deficiency and exhaustion of Zang Qi, insufficiency of True Qi, all Qi disorders unhealed for a long time, lack of appetite, complete lack of strength. Use burning needle (Fan Zhen), needle Ren Mai Qihai (CV6) one point, insert 5 fen, moxibust 100 cones. Then use fine needle, needle Zu Yangming Jing Zusanli (ST36) two points.
Treats deficiency labor with wheezing and coughing. Acupoint: Moxibustion on the space below the fifth thoracic vertebra of the spine, and Shenting (GV24), 100 cones each.
Treats deficiency labor with emaciation, Kidney deficiency, chronic cold of the Water Organ (Kidney), turbid urine with sperm, pain in the yin, Wu Lao Qi Shang (Five Exhaustions and Seven Injuries), deficiency and exhaustion, cold feet like ice, edema like water. Acupoint: Shenshu (BL23).
*Nan Jing Shu* says: There are two kidneys flanking the spine; the left is Shenshu, the right is Mingmen (Gate of Life). Mingmen means the root of life and nature. This acupoint is level with the umbilicus. When moxibusting Shenshu, stand upright, measure to the umbilicus with a stick, then use the same stick to measure on the dorsal spine to find the level with the umbilicus. Then measure 1.5 cun laterally from there to locate the acupoint, which is Shenshu. Press the depression with the hand before moxibustion to ensure accuracy.
All moxibustion should follow the age-based cone count. Moxibustion certainly has merit, but it also depends on personal cultivation. One should protect Dantian; I have discussed this in detail in *Jixiao Fang*. Regarding the harm caused by concubines and mistresses, I have not mentioned it. *Shi Jing* (Book of Songs) "Junzi Xielaolao" says: A woman who is promiscuous loses the way of serving her gentleman. Thus, it describes the virtue and splendid attire of the ruler's wife, implying she should grow old with her gentleman. If she should grow old but does not, the woman's fault is great. Hence the poet satirizes her. The intent is clear. As for scholar-officials who are satisfied with their ambition, becoming arrogant unexpectedly, having dozens of mistresses, or at least three or five, hearing obscene words constantly, unable to control themselves, indulging in desires—this is common. Wives remain indifferent. When asked, they say, "From a mother's perspective, I am virtuous; from my own, I might be jealous." Some praise them, and even husbands call them virtuous and non-jealous. Who knows that this non-jealousy is actually the ladder to disaster? Although the transformation of *Er Nan* (Two Souths) in the *Shi Jing* aims for a state without jealousy, speaking of this now, is it to differ from the poets? No. Ancients had intercourse once every ten days; men's non-jealousy was likely to allow concubines and mistresses to fulfill this quota. Non-jealousy is the same, but the reason differs. I highlight this as a warning for couples, not to deliberately differ from the poets.
Treats spermatorrhea and exhaustion of the Five Zang organs (any condition of extreme deficiency and cold is suitable for moxibustion). Acupoint: Qugu (CV2). Moxibustion 50 cones.
Treats cold pain in bone marrow. Acupoint: Shanglian (ST37). Moxibustion 70 cones.
*Nan Jing Shu* Eight Hui Points: Fu Hui is Zhongwan (CV12), treating Fu diseases; Zang Hui is Zhangmen (LR13), treating Zang diseases; Jin Hui is Yanglingquan (GB34), treating tendon diseases; Sui Hui is Jiexi (GB39), treating marrow diseases; Xue Hui is Geshu (BL17), treating blood diseases; Gu Hui is Dazhu (BL11) (contraindicated for moxibustion), treating bone diseases; Mai Hui is Taiyuan (LU9), treating vessel diseases; Qi Hui is Tanzhong (CV17), treating Qi diseases. Therefore, for bone marrow diseases, one should first use Dazhu and Jiexi, then Shanglian.
Treats insufficient fluids in Bladder and Sanjiao, cold-heat of Large and Small Intestines, or cold-heat of Sanjiao. Acupoint: Xiaochangshu (BL27). Moxibustion 50 cones.
Treats heat qi in Sanjiao, Bladder, and Kidney. Acupoint: Shuidao (ST28). Moxibustion age-based cones.
Treats emaciation and deficiency, nocturnal emission, rebellious Qi with coughing, mania, and forgetfulness. Acupoint: Gaohuangshu (BL43).
Gaohuangshu treats everything, but ancients could not locate it. Thus, Duke Jing of Jin was ill; the Qin physician said: For slow-progressing cases, it is "above the Gao and below the Huang"; attack is ineffective, reaching is impossible, medicine cannot arrive, and it is incurable. The Duke considered him a good doctor, but Sun Simiao laughed at his clumsiness for not locating the acupoint for moxibustion. Li Ziyu's Chilong Dan could treat ghosts in the Gao and Huang without moxibustion. The Qin physician was not only clumsy in not moxibusting but also lacked ghost-killing drugs. Was his skill limited to this?
Treats deficiency labor of the Five Zang organs, tense and hot lower abdomen, stubborn cold of the Five Zang organs, Kidney Wind deficiency-cold, spermatorrhea, turbid and difficult urination. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Shenshu (BL23) 50 cones. For elderly and children with damage, if deficiency-cold, up to 100 cones. Moxibust horizontally spaced three cuns apart.
Treats deficiency labor, pain in the yin, hematuria, seminal emission. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Lieque (LU7) 50 cones. Also moxibust Henggu (KI12) 50 cones. Also says: Treats exhaustion of the Five Zang organs, also moxibust Dahu (KI4) 30 cones.
Treats deficiency labor with spermatorrhea, tendon spasms, retraction of the yin into the abdomen, mutual pulling pain. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Fengqiu (KI7) 50 cones.
Treats sallow and withered complexion, labor Qi loss of essence, shoulder and arm pain unable to raise head. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Jianyu (LI15) 100 cones.
Treats spermatorrhea, tendon spasms, retraction of the yin into the abdomen, mutual pulling pain. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Siman (RN3) 50 cones each. Adults add more, children use age-based cones. These two points treat throat swelling, reversal cold, suffering of the Five Zang organs, and drum-like distension.
Treats deficiency labor with cold pain in waist and spine, frequent white turbid urine. Acupoint: Moxibustion on Pi Mu (Zhangmen, LR13) 100 cones. Also moxibust Sanjiaoshu (BL22) 100 cones. Also moxibust Zhangmen (LR13) 100 cones.
Treats cowardly labor injuries, etc.
First, make a wax thread, wrap it around the patient's head, using the distance between the two eyebrows as the standard, cut it. Thread a copper coin onto it and place it around the neck, using the throat as the center. Turn the coin to the back, mark the center of the coin hole with ink. Use wax door (method unclear, likely positioning aid) closing the horizontal wrinkle of the mouth as the standard, cut it, divide in half, the ink points on both sides are the acupoints. Moxibust 14 cones. Align with the patient's feet. Take a wax thread from the heel, go around to the big toe, cut it. Thread a copper coin, place around the neck, use throat as center, turn coin to the spine, mark the center of the coin hole.
Treats various deficiency labors, hard lower abdomen, unbearable colic, severe retraction of the yin causing near-death, and Yin-Yang Yi (exchange of yin and yang pathogens). Treats men contracting female Yin Yi disease. If involving multiple partners, acupoint: Moxibustion on Yintou (Guanyuan area/penile root) 100 cones for cure, up to 300 cones, all heal. The efficacy is unparalleled. Fertility remains unaffected. Additionally, if men feel it initially, moxibust Yintou 21 cones (if severe, up to 100 cones heals, eye/respiration unaffected, vaginal ulcers return to normal).
Treats brain deficiency-cold, cerebral hemorrhage, wind-cold entering the brain, chronic headache. Acupoint: Suitable for moxibustion on Xinhui (GV22).
Wang Shi said: Past my prime, reading books on cold nights, I often felt cold in the brain; excessive drinking caused severe brain pain. Later, moxibusting this point cured me. A soldier suffered from persistent epistaxis; I taught him to moxibust this point, and he was cured. Someone with chronic cephalalgia was also cured by moxibusting this point. Also says: Primarily treats nasal congestion and loss of smell/taste. So I record this to supplement treatment gaps. However, Naohu (GV17) is contraindicated for needling; observing Xinhui, it is also contraindicated for needling. *Zhen Jing* only says under eight years old should not be needled, which is likely incomplete.
Treats incessant eating, abdominal distension, sallow complexion, known in the world as Spleen-Kidney disease. Acupoint: Suitable for moxibustion on Zhongwan (CV12).
*Zisheng Jing* says: Zhuge Liang rose early and slept late, personally reviewing punishments of twenty strokes or more, yet ate less than one sheng. Sima Zhida knew he would die. Soon Liang died. Zhida pursued, but Yang Yi reversed flags and beat drums as if resisting, so Zhida retreated. People said, "Dead Zhuge drives living Zhida." Zhida heard this and said, "I can predict the living, not the dead." Predicting the living meant predicting events, and since his diet was less than before, it was a sign of death. Less diet, Zhida knew Kongming would die. Now, people eating less indicates Stomach Qi is ending, and they cannot live long. Yet they take Dan Shi (mineral pills), making digestion harder; take harsh tonics, making Spleen-Stomach hot, further reducing appetite. They do not know to moxibust Zhongwan etc. to strengthen Spleen-Stomach, which is a great confusion! (*Nan Jing* says: Humans take Stomach Qi as the root. *Shizhi* says: All Five Zang organs take Stomach Qi as the root. The Stomach is the mansion of water and grain. Humans must nourish Stomach Qi to live. Therefore, those wishing to preserve life should moxibust Weiwuan).
