The inability to eat after dysentery is caused by the deficiency of the Spleen and Stomach, and the rebellion of Qi in the chest. Wind-pathogens entering the intestines and stomach cause dysentery; dysentery leads to a significant consumption of water and grain (nutrients), causing the Spleen and Stomach to become deficient. After the dysentery stops, the Spleen and Stomach remain weak and cannot withstand the burden of food. Pathogenic factors contend with healthy Qi, causing Qi to rebel upwards, leading to weak Stomach Qi and an inability to eat. Dysentery accompanied by locked mouth and inability to eat (Jinkou Li - Locked Mouth Dysentery), although primarily located in the Spleen and Stomach, is actually caused by heat qi blocking the chest and heart. Commonly used Mugwort (Muxiang) treatment fails due to its warmth; using Yam (Shanyao) treatment fails due to its astringency. Only authentic Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) added with Acorus (Shichangpu), taken with hot decoction of high-quality rice (Jingmi), is effective. Alternatively, using Ginseng (Renshen), Poria (Fuling), and Stone Lotus Seed Flesh (Shi Lianzi Rou) with a small amount of Acorus allows the patient to take it. Once the chest Qi opens up, the desire to eat will naturally return.

Treating Locked Mouth Dysentery is very effective
Use Shilian (Stone Lotus Seed) in any quantity, do not fry, remove shell, grind the flesh and heart into powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with aged rice drink. One will feel the desire to eat. This disease is caused by toxic vapors rushing upward to the Huagai (Heart and Lungs), blocking Heart Qi, hence the inability to eat. After taking this medicine, Heart Qi becomes smooth, dysentery should be expelled immediately and cured. If not cured, take another dose of dysentery medicine. Also, use soil from the eastern wall exposed to sunlight, fry Zhen Jupi (True Tangerine Peel) into powder, decoct slightly with Jiang (Ginger) and Zao (Date) as an adjunct.
Dysentery with inability to accept food is commonly called "Locked Mouth". Nowadays, people often use Sizhu San, Lizhong Tang, Shenling San, adding Doukou and Muxiang, or Zhenling Dan, etc., to regulate. This is likely incorrect treatment. One must differentiate based on pulse and symptoms. If initially the Spleen/Stomach pulse is not weak, and inquiry reveals headache, irritability, fever in hands and feet, and no history of excessive cooling medicine intake, this is toxic vapors rushing to the Heart and Liver, causing vomiting and refusal to eat. It is suitable to use Baidu San (Detoxification Powder). Take 4 qian per dose, add 100 grains of aged Cangmi (Storehouse Rice), 3 slices of Ginger, 1 Date, 1.5 cups of water, decoct to 0.8 cup, take warm. If the pulse is weak and thready, or there is abdominal distension and fullness, cold extremities, no vomiting initially, but vomiting at the smell of food due to excessive use of astringents like Yingsu (Poppy) or Wumei (Myrobalan), or excessive cooling agents, this is Spleen and Stomach deficiency. Use only Shanyao, cut into bean-sized pieces, half stir-fried in a silver pot, half raw, ground together into powder, taken with rice drink. Chen Qingchang, Magistrate, said: Previously serving as Prefect in Nankang, a fifty-year-old official suffered from Locked Mouth Dysentery, unable to take fluids for several days. He consulted a medical book from a colleague, found a treatment method, and tried it. After one dose, dysentery eased slightly; after three doses, he asked for porridge, eating about half a bowl. From then on, dysentery stopped and he recovered. Using only Shanyao has divine effects.
Locked Mouth Dysentery
Use Luobo (Radish) slices, regardless of new or old. Rub good honey onto the slices. Let the patient hold them in the mouth. When the taste fades, replace with a new slice. Gradually, the desire to eat returns. Then cook meat porridge, let the patient smell the aroma and eat. Follow up with Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) for best results.
Xiali Shizhong Tang (Dampness-Resolving Decoction for Dysentery)
Use Shaoyao (Peony Root) 0.5 liang, Shengjiang (Ginger) 1 liang, Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) 0.5 liang, Wuzhuyu (Evodia Fruit) 150 pieces, sliced. Add 3 sheng of water, boil to obtain 1 sheng. Divide into two doses.
Another Prescription
Use one medium-sized processed Fuzi (Aconite Root), three medium-sized pieces of sliced Ganjiang (Dried Ginger). Add 3 sheng of water, boil to obtain 2 sheng. Strong individuals take the whole dose; weak individuals take half. Cure within three to four days.
Another Prescription
Use Mugua (Mugua Fruit/Monkfruit), remove shell, crush thoroughly, apply to the umbilicus. Cover with paper and bind with silk cloth. Remove when able to eat.
Treating Dysentery with Inability to Eat: Administering dysentery medicines is ineffective. Commonly known as Locked Mouth Dysentery, nine out of ten cases are fatal. This is because epidemic pathogens have entered the viscera. Use Renshen Baidu San (Ginseng Detoxification Powder), add 150+ grains of aged Nuomi (Sticky Rice), decoct and take according to standard method. Immediate cure. This prescription has saved many lives. All sudden acute watery diarrhea is caused by irregular diet damaging the Spleen and Stomach, leading to indistinguishable damp-heat and food/water, flowing down violently. It is often caused by excessive consumption of cold water and cool foods in summer. Do not immediately administer antidiarrheal or damp-heat clearing agents, as this may lead to tenesmus and formation of accumulated dysentery. Effective methods are as follows.
Doukou Fang (Nutmeg Formula): Treats dysentery with abdominal pain and inability to eat.
Use 1 liang of Doukou (Nutmeg), remove skin, wrap in vinegar-dough, roast until dough is cooked. Grind into powder. Take 1 qian with gruel as needed.
Canglin San (Granary Powder): Treats Locked Mouth Dysentery with heat, where toxic vapors rush to the Heart causing vomiting.
Renshen, Fuling, Gancao, Qianhu, Chuanxiong, Qianghuo, Duhuo, Jiegeng, Chaihu, Zhike, Chenmi (equal parts). Sift evenly. Decoct with Ginger and Mint, take hot.
Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder): Treats Stomach deficiency with locked mouth.
Baibian Dou (White Hyacinth Bean, soaked in Ginger juice, fried, peeled), Fuling, Shanyao, Renshen, Gancao, Lianrou (Lotus Seed Flesh), Sharen (Amomum Fruit), Jiegeng, Yiyiren (Coix Seed, fried, each 2 liang). Decoct Shichangpu (Acorus) in water to take the medicine. Alternatively, use half-fried Shanyao ground into powder, taken with rice drink. Eating raw Chinese chives is beneficial.
