Sanwu Decoction of Yinchen, Zhizi, and Huanglian (from *Huoren Shu*): Indicated for jaundice with normal bowel movements.
Ingredients: Yinchen Herba (3 qian), Zhizi Fructus, Huanglian Rhizoma (2 qian each). Add two zhan of water, decoct to eight-tenths, remove dregs, and take orally.
Indications: Treats jaundice caused by cold damage or epidemic qi, accompanied by irritability and heat.
For the above condition, use Tu Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) washed with hot water to extract the juice, taken in one dose. Zhuangzi stated: "The dung beetle's rolling ball is like this." It hides in the soil; dig up the ground to find it. It resembles a ball shaped by human hands; the older it is, the better.
To treat nasal congestion and jaundice from cold damage:
Decoct Ku Hu (Cucumis melo var. argyrospermus) to extract the juice, drip into the nose to discharge yellow fluid, thereby relieving congestion.
To treat five types of jaundice from cold damage:
Use Qiaoyao (Plant name), crush fresh and squeeze out the juice, take one sheng, twice daily, until recovery.
Another prescription:
Burn Luansha (Hair) to ash, take with water, one cun bi size, three times daily.
To treat latent heat accumulation, yellow eyes, anorexia, and difficult urination and defecation:
Decoct Gudan Miao (Seedling of Momordica charantia) and its seeds to extract juice, or crush fresh and squeeze out juice to take.
The so-called Baihe Bing (Lily Disease) of cold damage refers to a condition where all vessels, originating from one source, are affected by pathogenic factors. Symptoms include: desire to eat but inability to do so; constant silence and desire to lie down but inability to sleep; desire to walk but inability to do so; food sometimes tastes good, sometimes bad; feeling chills without actual chills; feeling feverish without actual fever; bitter taste in the mouth; dark yellow urine; vomiting or diarrhea after taking medicine. This arises because after cold damage or severe deficiency-consumption diseases, the Zang-Fu organs are deficient, and Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi) are depleted and weak, failing to return to balance, thus transforming into this disease. Since all vessels share one origin and are affected, and there is no fixed meridian transmission pattern, the symptoms vary. Treatment should be tailored to specific syndromes.
Baihe Bing often occurs after cold damage. If symptoms include aversion to cold and vomiting, the pathology is in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), and recovery is expected in 23 days. If symptoms include abdominal fullness, slight wheezing, hard stool, defecation once every three to four days, occasionally with loose stools, the pathology is in the Middle Jiao (Middle Burner), and recovery is expected in 60 days. If symptoms include dribbling dysuria and difficulty urinating, the pathology is in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner), and recovery is expected in 30 days. Treat according to the specific syndrome.
Symptoms of Baihe Bing include: desire to eat but inability to do so; sometimes finding food palatable, sometimes repulsed by the smell of food; feeling cold without actual cold; feeling hot without actual heat; constant silence and desire to lie down but inability to sleep; bitter taste in the mouth by morning; dark, painful urination; desire to walk but inability to do so. Various medicines fail to cure it; forced treatment leads to severe vomiting and diarrhea, as if possessed by spirits. Patients appear physically normal, with a slightly rapid pulse. Prognosis based on urination: if headache occurs during urination, recovery takes 60 days; if no headache but feeling chilly (Xixiran Han), recovery takes 40 days; if feeling relieved but dizzy, recovery takes 20 days. Signs may appear before illness, 4-5 days after onset, or 1 month and 20 days after onset. Misdiagnosis is common; treat according to the syndrome.
If the pathology manifests in the Yin aspect but Yang is attacked, Yin cannot resolve; inducing sweat at this stage is contraindicated (Ni). If the pathology manifests in the Yang aspect but Yin is attacked, Yang cannot resolve; purging at this stage will not cure the disease. The *Jin Gui Yao Lue* states: For pathology in Yin, use Yang methods to rescue; for pathology in Yang, use Yin methods to resolve. Attacking Yin when Yang signs are present and inducing sweat is contraindicated and difficult to treat. Attacking Yang when Yin signs are present and using purgatives is also contraindicated and difficult to treat.
Song verse: Unable to sit properly, unable to walk properly, neither cold nor hot, food sometimes good sometimes bad. Few know the secret of Baihe. Use Baihe Zhimu Tang, Baihe Dihuang Tang, or Baihe Xi Fang.
Another song verse: Baihe Bing feels like possession, sometimes likes eating, sometimes dislikes it, neither cold nor hot, wants to walk but cannot, wants to sleep but cannot. Baihe Bing affects all vessels, with no meridian transmission sequence. It results from disharmony of Zang-Fu after cold damage or deficiency-consumption. Symptoms mimic cold/heat but are neither; desire to eat but cannot; silent desire to lie but cannot sleep; strong desire to walk but cannot; bitter taste in mouth, dark yellow urine, vomiting/diarrhea upon taking medicine. Pulse is slightly rapid. Headache during urination indicates 60-day recovery; chilly sensation without headache indicates 40-day recovery; relief with dizziness indicates 20-day recovery. Select from Baihe Zhimu Tang, Baihe Dihuang Tang, Boshi Daizhe Tang, Jizi Tang, or Baihe Xi Fang.
