For various diseases that are cured by emesis, the pathogenic factor is located in the chest. The general principle for treating Cold Damage (Shanghan) states that if four days have passed and the disease has entered the Yin meridians, but the transmission has not yet gone deep, and the pathogenic factor is high with different accumulations of toxic phlegm, the symptoms manifest as fullness and distension in the center of the chest, depression and pain, difficulty in breathing, excessive saliva, vomiting immediately after eating, a desire to vomit but inability to do so, or cold hands and feet, alternatively fullness and irritability below the heart, hunger but inability to eat, and mental restlessness and vexation after improper use of emetic or purgative methods. This corresponds to what the *Neijing* (Inner Canon) refers to as "where the pathology is high, induce it to go out from above," which is exactly this method.
Prescriptions:
To treat chest fullness and oppression caused by Warm Disease (Wenbing), induce emesis. (From *Shengji Zonglu*)
Three Pig Gallbladders (Sanmei), two He of bitter wine (Ku Jiu). Mix well together, filter through silk gauze, and take in one dose. If emesis does not occur, take another dose.
Renshen Decoction (Ren Shen Tang) (From *Shengji Zonglu*). Treats mental restlessness and chest oppression after sweating in Cold Damage (Shanghan), where heat and vexation are not yet resolved.
Ban Liang of Ginseng Root (Ren Shen), a small bundle of Juncus Effusus Stem (Deng Xin), one Fen of Aurantium Fructus (Zhi Ke, bran-fried and pith removed), one piece of Areca Peel (Da Fu Pi, chopped), two Qian of Tea Powder (Cha Mo), raw Licorice Root (Sheng Gan Cao). To treat excessive phlegm in the chest and heart, indicated for Cold Damage (Shanghan), febrile diseases, and malarial pestilence requiring emesis. (From *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Take one large spoonful of salt powder, swallow with water or warm water. Emesis will occur shortly. If the emesis is not thorough, take again the next morning. Effective. *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* records using one Sheng of salt.
To treat Cold Damage (Shanghan) where sweating fails to resolve the condition, having lasted three to four days, with chest oppression and urge to vomit. (From *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Take one He of Fermented Soybean (Chi) and salt, add four Sheng of water, decoct to obtain one and a half Sheng. Take in divided doses. Emesis should occur. Another prescription uses no salt; instead, use one Liang of honey, boil three times, and take in one dose.
Another Prescription (From *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*)
Use three Jin of fresh Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang), finely chopped, add one Dou of water, decoct to obtain three Sheng. Take in three divided doses. One may also take Lili Emesis Powder (Lilu Tu San) or Kushen Longdan Powder (Kushen Longdan San).
To treat chest and heart fullness and oppression in Cold Damage (Shanghan), induce emesis.
Take juice from one Pig Gallbladder (Zhu Dan), mix with one small cup of vinegar and one small cup of wine. Combine with pig gallbladder juice, warm slightly, and divide into two doses. Emesis should occur. Immediate recovery.
