Hematemesis (vomiting blood) disease has three main types: first, it is caused by heat accumulation in the Heart and Lungs. Blood, when subjected to heat, acts recklessly and flows downward into the Stomach. Upon receiving the blood, the Stomach feels distended and full, the Qi mechanism is obstructed, and Qi and Blood rush upward.
Danggui Dahuang Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Rhubarb Decoction, from *Qianjin Fang*) treats hematemesis accompanied by cold pain in the chest.
Herbs: Shaoyao (Peony Root), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Fuling (Poria), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Dahuang (Rhubarb), Mangxiao (Mirabilite) (each 2 liang); Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), Gancao (Licorice Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root) (each 2 liang).
Preparation: Cut the herbs, decoct with water.
Huangtu Tang (Yellow Earth Decoction, also known as Dihuang Tang, from *Qianjin Fang*) is a formula for treating hematemesis.
Herbs: Fulonggan (Cooked Earth from the Dragon's Lair - Coagulated Earth from the Hearth) (two pieces the size of chicken eggs); Guixin (Cinnamon Twig) (remove coarse bark); Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (pao/cracked); Danggui (Angelica Sinensis); Shaoyao (Peony Root); Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica); Gancao (Licorice Root) (zhi/roasted and cut); Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin).
Preparation: Cut the herbs, decoct with wine and water. (Another version excludes Ejiao.)
Jiumai Tang (Pulse-Saving Decoction, also known as Renshen Jiufei San, from *Shixiao Fang*) treats hematemesis and hemoptysis (coughing up blood).
Herbs: Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome) (each 1 qian); Danggui Shao (Tip of Angelica Sinensis Root), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Baishao Yao (White Peony Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 2 qian); Sumu (Sappan Wood) (0.5 liang).
Lingyangjiao Tang (Antelope Horn Decoction, from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats hematemesis.
Herbs: Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) (sliced, 3 liang); Fulonggan (Cooked Earth from the Dragon's Lair) (5 liang); Shuai Ai (Mugwort Leaf, fried) (1 liang); Diyü (Sanguisorba Root) (cleaned of soil); Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) (soaked in wine and dried); Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark); Daji Gen (Great Thistle Root) (each 3 liang); Jisu Ye (Elsholtzia Leaf).
Preparation: Add Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), half a piece, crushed, and decoct together until seven boils.
Ershen Tang (Two Divine Ingredients Decoction, from *Zhu Shi Jiyan Fang*) treats hematemesis with excellent effect, applicable to both men and women suffering from "red vomiting" (hematemesis). This condition often arises from chronic illness or excessive labor, damaging Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi, causing stagnation of Qi and Blood, leading to reckless bleeding. Herbs: Gan Shengdihuang (Dried Raw Rehmannia Root) (dried, 5 liang); Wangbuliuxing (Vaccaria Seed); Mudanpi (Tree Peony Bark) (each 2 liang); Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root); Bixie (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Rhizome) (each 4 liang); Maimendong (Ophiopogon Tuber) (decored and dried).
Preparation: Use Dihuang Zhi (Rehmannia Juice) 3 sheng, water... Several doses will cure.
Chishaoyao San (Red Peony Powder, from *Shengji Zonglu*) treats spitting blood.

Herbs: Sanggen Baipi (Mulberry Root Bark) (6 liang); Shengjiang Xie (Fresh Ginger Shreds) (6 liang); Baiye (Cacumen Platycladi); Jisu (Elsholtzia) (each 4 liang); Xiaoji Gen (Small Thistle Root) (5 liang); Ganhudi Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root) (7 liang).

Jisu Qiwei Tang (Seven-Ingredient Elsholtzia Decoction, from *Jingyan Liangfang*) treats blood diseases in two types. One type is caused by internal injury from falling; the other by accumulated heat combined with fatigue. If due to internal injury, one must refer to previous formulas for internal damage and lower gastrointestinal bleeding. If due to accumulated fatigue causing hematemesis, there are no other symptoms. One only feels mental distress, a desire to vomit, and heat in the back, leading to this disease. It is appropriate to use this medicine and Sangbaipi San for treatment.
