The Lung governs Qi, and the Qi of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs is all derived from and regulated by Qi. After childbirth, both Blood and Qi are injured, and the functions of the Zang and Fu organs are impaired. If Wind-Cold combats with Qi, the Qi rebels and moves upward.
Coughing and belching (eructation) arise from Stomach Cold. When medicinal administration proves ineffective, moxibustion on Qimen (LR14, Great Luo of the Stomach) for three moxa cones will surely cure it. Qimen is the major Luo-connecting vessel of the Stomach.
Formulas
Dingxiang San (Clove Powder): Treats postpartum mental restlessness, incessant coughing and belching, deficiency-cold of the Spleen and Stomach, and rebellion of Wei-Qi (Defensive Qi).
Ingredients: Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Baidoukou Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Fulonggan (Dragon's House Earth). Grind into fine powder. Take one qian, mixed with a decoction of Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus).
Ruxing Ren Shi Lian San (Stone Lotus Meat Powder): Treats Qi rebellion, belching, vomiting, palpitations, dizziness, and loss of appetite.
Ingredients: Shilian Rou (Nelumbinis Plumula), Baifuling (Poria), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos). Grind into fine powder. Take three qian per dose, mixed with rice water. Administer at any time.
Qianghuo San (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix Powder): Treats cough.
Ingredients: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Baijiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatus). Grind into coarse powder. Take two qian per dose. Boil in one sheng of water... [Text incomplete].
Dingxiang San (Clove Powder): Treats postpartum cough and hiccups.
Ingredients: Shilian Rou (Nelumbinis Plumula, ten pieces, heart removed and dried), Baifuling (Poria, one liang), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos, ten sprigs). Grind into powder. Add half a zhan of water, boil briefly, and take while hot.
For postpartum cough and hiccups, or cases involving chaotic Qi and mental restlessness:
Take one dried persimmon, chop finely, add one sheng of water, boil until reduced to six-tenths volume, and take while warm.
Another prescription for postpartum cough and hiccups persisting for three to five days, causing extreme distress:
Take three or four "mirror nests" (ancient wall crevices/accumulations), add a small zhan of water, boil until reduced by half, and take while hot.
To treat dry retching/rebellion in women:
Grind Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) into powder, decoct with five slices of ginger, and take.
To treat rebellious Qi after childbirth in women:
Grind Qingjupi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) into powder, decoct with Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and Tongzi Xiaoniao (Child's Urine), mix and take.
To treat incessant postpartum cough:
Goudan (Canis Bile), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), Wulingzhi (Trogopterori Faeces) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder, use Goudan as a binder to form pills the size of white soybeans. Take one pill per dose.
