Huai Shanghan (Damaged Cold Damage) refers to the condition where, after the pathogenic factors have affected all three Yin and three Yang meridians, the toxic qi has not dissipated but remains stagnant in the Zang-Fu organs, causing the symptoms to vary frequently. Hence it is called "Damaged Cold Damage."
If the original Taiyang disease does not resolve and transfers to the Shaoyang meridian, presenting with hardness and fullness below the costal region, dry retching, inability to eat, alternating chills and fever, and a deep-tight pulse, Xiao Chaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is appropriate. If the Cun Kou (radial artery at the wrist) pulse is surging, rapid, and slippery, a surging pulse indicates abundant Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi), while a slippery-rapid pulse indicates robust Wei Qi (Defensive Qi). Abundant Ying Qi leads to stagnation and constraint; sweating can be induced. Robust Wei Qi leads to hard and difficult defecation, closure of the San Jiao (Triple Burner), blockage of body fluids, and interaction between Ying and Wei Qi, resulting in mental restlessness, fever, eyes burning like fire, dry nose, red face, dry tongue, yellow teeth, and extreme thirst. Therefore, for Taiyang disease that has passed its transmission cycle, if sweating was performed three days after onset, or if emesis, purgation, or sweating methods were used but the syndrome remained unresolved, it often transforms into Huai Bing (Damaged Disease). Furthermore, if Taiyang disease transfers to Shaoyang, and after emesis, purgation, and sweating, the Shaoyang syndrome has ceased, this is also considered Huai Bing. One must determine what error (Ni) was made and treat according to the law. These cases arise because the Cold Damage pathogen was in the meridians, and after sweating, emesis, and purgation, the symptoms did not clear, followed by infection with different heterogenous pathogens (such as cold, heat, dryness, dampness, wind). The pathology changes accordingly, hence termed Huai Bing. Additionally, if Cold Damage passes the transmission cycle and is re-infected by heat pathogens, which remain accumulated in the Zang-Fu organs causing variable symptoms, or if after the resolution of Cold Damage, the patient remains weak and emaciated with shortness of breath and residual symptoms, these are all called Huai Bing.

Guo Yi from Luzhou, named Yu, said his adoptive father Li, an Assistant Instructor from Daming Prefecture, was skilled in formulas and pulse diagnosis. He prepared this to treat four or five people, all recovered. The formula was obtained from a monk from Tiantai; the medication is very unusual. Some say its efficacy lies in Lou Gua (Trichosanthes Fruit), which is hard to understand.
