According to medical texts, "Head and Face Wind" refers to vertigo. However, vertigo involves three categories of etiology (internal, external, and neither internal nor external) and is not exclusively attributed to Head and Face Wind. For instance, severe invasion by wind, cold, summer-heat, and dampness belongs to the external etiology. Emotional disturbances such as anger, joy, worry, and overthinking cause dysfunction of zang-fu qi mechanism, leading to stagnation and generation of phlegm-fluids. These fluids condense into fluid retention, ascend with qi, and lodge in the yang meridians, also causing vertigo, vomiting, pain in the eyebrows and eyes, and inability to open the eyes; this belongs to the internal etiology. Alternatively, injury caused by irregular diet (hunger or overeating), excessive consumption of sweet and greasy foods damaging the spleen and stomach, excessive sexual activity leading to deficiency below and excess above, tooth extraction or metal trauma, hematemesis, epistaxis, hematochezia or hematuria, excessive blood loss, as well as uterine bleeding or trauma in women, can all induce vertigo, visual spinning, and fainting upon standing; these belong to the neither internal nor external etiology.
Head and Face Wind arises when individuals with weak constitution are attacked by wind pathogen in their yang meridians. All yang meridians ascend to the head and face. If physical exertion causes yang qi to dissipate and the couli (skin pores) to become open, wind pathogen may invade, termed "Shou Feng" (First Wind). Its manifestations include profuse sweating on the head and face, aversion to wind, and headache. Additionally, lying down immediately after washing hair while it is still wet can cause heavy head, body heat, or irritability. Sleeping outdoors in summer where dew falls on the face can thicken the facial skin, leading to sores and tinea, known as "Mian Feng" (Face Wind).
