Qi belongs to Yang. Individuals with insufficient Yang Qi are unable to dissolve and transform fluid retention (Shuiyin). If accompanied by Spleen Qi deficiency and obstruction of the Qi mechanism, fluid retention accumulates to form Phlegm-Dampness, which infiltrates the Stomach and Intestines.
Upper Jiao manifestations often include coughing; this is a case where Heart Fire exacerbates Kidney Water pathology. Treatment should involve draining the deficient fire from the Kidney within the Lung. Only acrid-hot herbs can dispel this condition. The presence of frothy phlegm in the mouth indicates Cold in the Stomach causing disharmony; it should be treated with acrid-sweet-hot herbs. This pattern is common among those who consume alcohol.
