Hongjiao (Gouty Arthritis) is a disease caused by the invasion of Wind-Toxin due to the body's deficiency. However, Hongjiao can be classified into Dry and Wet types, as well as Yin and Yang patterns. The Dry type is characterized by the absence of swelling, while the Wet type presents with swelling and fullness.
Regarding Zang-Fu organs:
The so-called Dry type occurs because the Couli (skin pores and interstices) are dense, leading to a decrease in body fluids. This is primarily due to Kidney Qi deficiency, where stagnant water remains in the Bladder, causing blockage and stagnation in the meridians, preventing free circulation. Consequently, swelling and fullness appear first, gradually attacking the Heart and abdomen. The toxic qi does not dissipate but spreads throughout the four limbs. Symptoms include heat and pain in both feet, restlessness and oppression in the chest and heart, rapid and short breathing, coughing with thick and sticky phlegm, puffy face and eyes, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, vomiting upon seeing food, high fever, headache, difficult urination, and dry, hard stools. Wind-Qi stagnates, and sores may appear on the skin. The clinical manifestation involves swelling of the feet and knees; hence it is named Wet Hongjiao. (Note: The original text logic seems contradictory here, describing swelling under the Dry type section before naming it Wet Hongjiao; this translation follows the original text literally.)
Formulas:
Lingyang Jiao Yin (Antelope Horn Decoction): Treats both Dry and Wet Hongjiao.
Ingredients include: Lingyang Jiao (Antelope Horn, sliced), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, de-radicle), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, de-bark), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, wine-soaked and dried), Baifuling (Poria, de-black skin), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, de-skin and tip), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, de-root nodes), Chuanpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, soaked in water, de-white pith).
