The Lung is the "Huagai" (Canopy covering and protecting the other Zang organs) of the five Zang organs. It opens into the nose. When Lung Qi is harmonious, the nasal orifice is also harmonious. If the Lung is affected by wind-cold, it results in clear rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, and the growth of polyps.
The treatments for these conditions differ. The Lung is the master of Qi and communicates with the external environment through the nasal orifice. The nose is the pathway for the entry and exit of clear Qi. When Yin and Yang ascend and descend in order, and Qi and Blood are peaceful, Ying and Wei Qi circulate normally with each breath. However, if internal injury from the Seven Emotions or external invasion by the Six Exogenous Factors occurs, clear and turbid substances become mixed, the brain marrow becomes chaotic, and various symptoms arise sequentially. Blood and Qi travel together. If heat generated within the Zang-Fu invades the Qi and Blood, the heat forces blood to move recklessly, causing epistaxis (nosebleed) from the nostrils. Epistaxis leads to dryness of body fluids; cold causes marrow-rhinorrhea to flow. If wind-cold follows Qi to invade the nose and brain, body fluids and rhinorrhea cannot be controlled, a condition called rhinorrhea. If the Lung is injured by wind-cold, and body fluids become cold or generate heat, pathogenic heat lingers and does not dissipate, resulting in nasal sores. Considering these several conditions, whether caused by the Seven Emotions or the Six Exogenous Factors, one must investigate the root cause of the invasion. Medication should be administered in an orderly manner, and recovery can be expected. Relying rigidly on prescriptions without flexibility will ultimately yield no benefit. Furthermore, there is a dampness syndrome characterized by nasal ulceration, foul-smelling discharge, ulcers in the lower body, and epistaxis, named "Jiu Shi Nu" (Alcohol and Food Epistaxis). Alternatively, trauma from falls or horseback riding may cause blood overflow leading to epistaxis, named "Zhe Shang Nu" (Traumatic Epistaxis). (The *Nose Syndrome Song* from *Jian Yi Fang* states: The opening and closing of the Lung concern the nose; Yin and Yang ascent and descent reside here. The nose is originally the pathway for clear Qi, primarily responsible for smelling fragrances and odors, requiring internal harmony. Clear rhinorrhea and nasal leakage indicate Lung wind injury; cold brain often produces turbid pus. When meridians are congested, epistaxis may occur upwards; long-standing polyps in the brain become pathological lesions. External contraction of the Six Evils combined with emotional depression, irregular diet, and labor/epidemic toxins cause clear and turbid substances to mix. Scrofula, Lung wind-heat, and epidemic epistaxis of two to three sheng are stopped effectively using Long Gu [Fossilized Bones].)
Nasal congestion with obstructed breathing is caused by the Lung contracting wind-cold, where Qi knots and fails to diffuse smoothly. Severe obstruction prevents inhalation and exhalation. Chao Yuanfang stated that polyp growth causes Qi obstruction, but this likely refers to cases where Qi is obstructed without polyps; thus, differentiation and treatment are necessary. Lung Qi connects to the nose. In cases of..., polyps grow, causing Qi obstruction and blocked breathing.
