The condition known as Xiao Shen (Kidney Wasting) is caused by the deficiency and exhaustion of the Kidney, cold damage to the Bladder, decline of Spleen and Stomach Qi, and the intensification of exogenous pathogenic heat and toxins. Even if food is consumed, it fails to generate muscle and flesh nourishment. This leads to emaciation of the legs and calves, soreness and pain in the bone joints, and frequent, slippery urination; hence it is called "Xiao Shen." Individuals who have lived a licentious life throughout their years will suffer from various diseases when they grow old due to weak Kidney Qi. Others, fearing impotence in their youth, take excessive amounts of mineral pills (Shi San) to pursue extreme sexual pleasure, leading to overindulgence. Once the True Qi is exhausted, the toxicity of the minerals stands alone, causing only depletion. Symptoms include dry lips and mouth, spontaneous emission of essence, or turbid white urine, and dry, difficult defecation. The ingested food is directly transformed into urine and discharged. Since the Kidney Qi is wasted and damaged, it is named Xiao Shen.
