Jie (boil/furuncle) is a condition caused by the binding and accumulation of wind-dampness and cold qi with blood stasis. When people engage in physical labor, their yang qi is dispersed outward, leading to sweating. If exposed to cold and dampness during this state, the cold qi attacks the meridians. The blood, congealed by the cold, becomes stagnant and obstructed, resulting in the formation of Jie (boils). Initially, the swelling resembles a plum or apricot. It is also stated that a swelling with a diameter of one to two cun is called Jie. If the boil does not resolve and suppurates, the pus should be drained until clear blood flows out. If the pus is not completely expelled, the wound may heal and then recur. If boils occur on the ears, jaw, neck, or axilla, and the pus is not fully drained, they often transform into fistulas (Lou).

For carbuncles and boils regardless of age, at the initial stage of fever and swelling, apply clean mud from beside a well. The spot that dries first indicates the apex of the sore. Place a large brush tube over it. Put one large horse leech inside. Frequently pour cold water on it. The leech will suck the toxic blood from the swelling. If the toxin is heavy and the leech is small, use 3-4 leeches. The leech will likely die; revive it with water.
